Good video. I'm kind of on the lookout for a "bad" 318 to fix up. If you pay attention to the mechanical quirks instead of focusing on cosmetics, sometimes you can still sell a "bad" tractor for a good chunk of money. A cracked seat or scratched up hood doesn't really bother me when looking for a tractor...if the engine runs good with no leaks or blowby, the rest of the drivetrain is sound, and all shields/guards are in place and intact, it may still be profitable.

Thank you very good points! I'm glad my neighbor after his passing gave me his 1988 332 JD with all the attachments. 50 ' deck, plow & material collection system. The refurbished radiator was very hard to find on E bay at $525 with shipping. Dealer wanted $910 for new one! So far invested about $800 & still gotta put deck on & mule together plus repair hood & all covers.

@@urbanitesgarage3299 I sold it for $2500 in 2021 with everything because I was afraid it will break down & cost me a ton to fix at diesel mechanic rate. I got my money back total investment $1900 paint & bondo. But not the time spent. All the hydraulic lines on the engine looked dry rotten. All other hydraulic hoses going back & diesel tank pick up tube were all original. The water pump started leak very little. Plus parts are very expensive & hard to find. Sometimes it's best to walk away eventhough it was free.

I paid $400 for a non running 318 several years ago. Ended up with a broken rod but amazingly no wear on the cylinders. I’m still trying to decide if I’m capable of doing a complete rebuild like you did a couple years ago or just buy repower kit. My 316 I completely restored but I was lucky enough for it to be running and has great compression. The sound and power of the Onan is fantastic but still weighing my options for the 318.

Not with the atv tires . They bite and go

Nice Video. I currently bought a 86 JD 318 and everything worked as it should and i was wondering since it has a small minor crack on the frame rail where the frame curls and it bolts to the axle. do you know what may have caused that since the frame is very heavy duty. possible just a weaker point in the metal?

I purchased a 318 from a guy yesterday, for $700. Won't run unless the choke is on and the deck hydraulics are frozen up. Cosmetically it's in good shape, everything is there, but I'm hoping I didn't overspend. Hopefully, it's just a gunked-up fuel filter and I haven't worked on hydraulics before, so this will be a first for me. The guy told me it hadn't been used in 3 years. He was the original owner, so I suppose that's a plus.

Wanted a 318 for so long They are all basically the same right? The frame on a 420 is a serious beast. It is definitely more rough and tumble. Hate it it the 420 is so hated just because the front end is wider. Because of attachments. The front PTO on my 420 can power a 8000 watt generator if you can fabricate the shafts (same knuckle fabricated yoke) . The rear pto if installed properly and piped can power nearly anything. The hydraulics can extend to the PTO power to operate damn near anything someone can dream up.

One thing negative to say, with the deck on (60 in driveshaft etc) is more than 1100 pounds. You will not move it without a couple cases of twinkies. It rolled down my slightly inclined driveway in just a second or two it was going so fast I barely caught it. Jumped on the right side and jammed my foot on the brakes and nothing happened. To answer your question about the rear mounting bolts. The oil pan is threaded and you just need a 14 or 15 mm socket and ratchet w/ extension to take them out. In some cases someone has used a nut and bolt. Then it becomes very difficult to remove them, but that is not OEM.

@mmrbeef
@mmrbeef 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is necessarily a cap on the hours on the meter. Meters can be replaced and keys can be left on. The Onan life span in a 318 will boil down to care and maintenance (500-2000+hrs). Any of the 300 and 400 series machines are great economical units that with a little bit of time and work can last for many many years. Just take your time shopping. I need to do a video telling the story about my second 318. What a disaster that was!!!

For less money and more options in the same year range you can get a Simplicity Sunstar with the 20HP. It has hi/lo transmission, locking differential, shaft driven implements and better headlights. Same options as the 318 like power steering, split brakes. Down side they are ugly as sin. Actually, money might be closer now than say 5 years ago.

I think it really depends on where you find them. I've bought lots of $500 318's over the years.. I think the least I have ever paid for one was $200. But I've also paid a lot more for 318's. You just really have to give them a good look over and then come up with the price. Plus, as I have tried to say often, price is relative, if the buyer and seller are both happy not too much more matters.

And before you 318 lovers (like me) come full frontal on me. An odd observation is the nomenclature. Is it not odd that frame dimensions are 20% larger, except in the rear transmission mounts. The steel on the frames is 20% larger. The machine itself is 20% more heavy. the steel frame is about 20% thicker. And the engine was 20 hp. That is starting to smell like a duck.

Moreover, the low end torque on these onan engines is fantastic. even stevens with the yanmar diesel. if my gasoline powered engine stops in the winter a spray of ether will turn it right over. no need to keep it warm. It's a damn simple engine that simply needs maintenance. Now for controlling both. The 420 is called male, and the lx188 is called female. Not like they cannot change genders?, just like today eh? You lock by accident the axle then perhaps you have a nutstang. Gotta be careful with the 420. My lx188 has no worries about that kinda

See for me personally (My Opinion) ill take a Kohler series 2 or magnum 18 over a Onan any day of the week,,, they take much more of a beating and last many more hours ,,, just my opinion ,, plus cast iron cylinders ,, many perks without all the things like rods and valve guides ya have to worry about with onan ,, but that is just me.. plus on my 317 a Dana rear end lol does it get any better lol

Both of my 317's have a Sundstrand transmission just like all the 300 series John Deere tractors. I believe the 318 was mated to a peerless differential as opposed to a 317 with a Dana GT-20 differential. One of my 317's has the Kohler KT17 series 2 and the other has the P218G replacement. I am with PhatboyHD88 I prefer Kohler and have a couple magnum's just waiting to go in something!

Gosh you are picky! Sounds like my inspections in the 82nd Abn Div. Your tee shirts area half inch long. BTW my budget on my 500 dollar machine is about 1500 dollars, all devoted to 3 point hitch, rear PTO and a blade or something. The skin is nearly perfect. This machine was pampered by the original owner. The other owners allowed the flywheel to rust and simply left it parked in the weather. Not running... no shyte... fuel line to pump..chewed off and gone (ate) by rodents. Stator wire, chewed up and covered in rat excrement. Oil sending wire eaten to the nibbens.

@@mmrbeef I found one but cash wasn't there and it had a honda 20hp with 150 hours so like you said I'll just need to watch. I watched a 425 full hydro 3 cylinder I think but those arent cheap. I dont need a monster just a full hydro to help my med issues out and snow cleaning. I'll use my lx176 in the summer.

o my very last comment is to search diigently for the service manuals for your machines. Engines transmissions everything you can find . My intention is to restore this 420 that I have. No ability to share videos nor would that be something I need to do. And then perhaps, read all of them over and over and over. Get agressive on your machine, and keep a hand written log on what you have done and your next step. This works on all of life. Seems like a hasssle, I know. Do your best.

If you 318 owners want to cry, then go ahead. My 420 can actually run over you in low gear, and further, outrun you in reverse. Stop hating and do some posts.

james rollins you 420 dummies have the same block the bore and stroke are the same it's the carb that determines the 2 horse diff unless the cam profiles are diff too

420's have pretty much all the same components as a 318 except larger and even more sophisticated...which means there are even more things to look out for when buying a 420...and chances are it will cost even more to fully fix a 420 compared to a 318.

This is what is wrong with john deere people. Pretty over practical. The real questions are: Does it have a rear pto? Which engine does it have? Lanmar or Onan? Has it been repowered? What deck does it have if any? Was it altered? Rear facing hydraulic couplers? Is it safe? The more versatile the machine, the more it is worth. Who cares if the hood is cracked? If if is missing a side pannel? The real question is what is it capable of? What can you do with it? This is the stand alone value of the machine to anybody who wants one. It will till, disk, grade, mow 120", load up to 1000lbs, remove snow up to 3' tall, sweep, thatch, vacuum debris, collect grass, pull wagons, and move trailers. The steering leaks a little and I have to put a quart of transdraulic fluid in once a season. But the value comes in the year round everything use.

I hate to disagree with you (on some things), and I'm not a John Deere guy, but mmrbeef's analysis isn't that far off. Paint does matter. A better paint job is going to do a better job of protecting the metal over time. Tires matter. If the hood is cracked, it's an entry point for water to invite more corrosion. Side panels matter, especially on Onan's. Most of his points are valid, but yes, he did miss some points as you pointed out. I just think it's an exagerrated response to imply there is something wrong with him (and other John Deere owners) because he didn't hit all of those points for you. I appreciate mmrbeef's time and effort to make this video for people that might not know what to look for, so they can make a better decision when buying their equipment.
