Thank you all for your comments. Some of us have an abundance of blessings every day. Others have to dig deeper to find them. Etty Hillesum, a holocaust survivor wrote: "As life becomes harder and more threatening, it also becomes richer, because the fewer expectations we have, the more the good things of life become unexpected gifts that we accept with gratitude." If we can keep open to surprise, we might discover more and more to be grateful for...

Dearest Brother, your words brought happy tears as I am so touched by your spirit. I will share your beautiful video with many others. These are the messages, images and music that we need to focus on to counterbalance the darkness. Thank you for your love of humankind--we cannot have world peace until we love ourselves, have respect for ALL sentient beings and have constant gratitude at each fresh moment in our lives. The world is a beautiful place when we look. You have blessed us all David.

He's done a lot more than look at clouds all day. My understanding of presence is awareness without thought. Thought is useful when changing a gasket, but if it never shuts up? I think B. David is just encouraging greater awareness of the beauty that surrounds us. First Day = Awe, seeing anew. Last Day = Not putting off life (someday I want to...). The gift is the beauty that presence brings into our awareness. How often does our internal dialogue blind us to that. There's so much more.

All this time, I understood that to live happily virtue was needed. With virtue I understand inner peace and compassion towards all beings, and all the virtues that come from both of this. But I always knew something was missing. Thanks to the words of this saint, I understand now that the first step, is being grateful. Because by being grateful, we can comprehend the absolute beauty of this world, all sentient beings and God. Because if I can have inner peace and compassion, and with this happiness, I have to be great full of having the opportunity of enjoying my life every single way. Through gratefulness we become humble, with humbleness we understand our position, and form there, we move towards virtue, always touching it and always going to it. We learn to appreciate our potential of happiness and we obtain inner peace with compassion, but by being grateful first and always. God bless this man.

Yesterday a friend an I took a hiking trip (snowshoeing) up on Mt Rainier. It was completely overcast as we drove toward the mountain, and we were talking about how it was great that we'd brought our extra thick coats. As we got closer to our starting point we saw a beautiful bright blue sky ... and warm ... we were above the thick layer with just a few little puffy clouds. What a gift! I spent quite a few moments giving thanks. :)

What a powerful message, In today's world all we hear about is bad news and nothing about what good there is. On thanksgiving day me and my brother were watching the news and thought they had gone insane when they started talking about good things for a few minutes. Sadly, a few minutes later it was back to the usual who got killed and what's bad in this world. Listen to a message like this when times are down and you will respect the fact that you should be lucky for you have and get to do.

Last month I took a few days to go on a last-minute trip to Colorado ... to get away, see a concert and spend some time just "being." I got lost while driving around, but rather than getting upset I just kept driving in the general direction of where I thought I should go. I paid attention to the sky, the land, the trees ... everything. I stopped in a little coffee shop to ask directions and said hello to everyone, they were all so friendly. All in all, it was a good day!

Brother David is beautiful. I am so grateful for him! (Smiling). His teaching reminds me of a mystical experience I once had where I entered gratitude--a thankfulness to the Divine (as I best comprehended such). The result was a momentary release from the conditioned mind---an out of body experience that was pure illuminated bliss. As perfect as it was it lasted only moments. Years later I was to learn it was the heaviness of the conditioned mind that "closed back in." Stiendl-Rast presents the beauty of contemplating gratitude and it will (slowly) transform us. How good is that!?
