We're off on a grand tour, or road trip to visit some of the many offensive places found in England. Covering 260 miles we'll be passing through Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire on what can only be described as an epic road trip. Or grand tour because that might help with the SEO...
Anyway, grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and try not to giggle like a school child as we take a look at some of the offensive place names found in our fine country.

I used to work at the RAC in their back offices. Their computer system at the time compressed all place names down to the first four letters. Yes, you're ahead of me. Any breakdowns in Clitheroe raised eyebrows.

Similar story to Shitterton village. The locals there banded together. Raised the money to have the name engraved on a 1.5 tonne block of Portland stone. To put off the theives.

Opie Street in Norwich was once Gropekuntelane. There used to be lots of Gropecunt Lanes (or variations thereof) around England in the Medieval period but, sadly, they've all gone now. The last record of one was from 1561.

Those I can think of off hand are Crapstone (Devon), Shitterton (Dorset), Pishill (Oxfordshire), Sandy Balls (Hampshire), Pratts Bottom (Kent), Fingrinhoe (Essex), Twatt (Shetland and Orkney), Titty Ho (Raunds, Northam0tonshire), Fanny Lane (Keighley, W Yorks), Grope Lane (Shrewsbury, Shropshire), Butthole Lane (Shepshed, Leicestershire) and no doubt plenty more I can't think of at the moment.

BRM's supercharged V16 was nuts. Then ten years later give or take, in 1966, they showed up with the H16, which was two V8 engines mashed together, with a chain system. It vibrated a lot so they put weights on it. The weights had a tenancy to fly of and blow up the entire thing. Then in the late 60s while doing the H16 shenanigans and madness, they teamed up with Rover, yes, /that/ Rover, to enter a gas powered car at Le Mans. An then not to be outdone, they won the last pre-chicane Monza race in one of the closest finishes ever, Peter Gethin won. Howden Ganley fiffth. The story goes that ater the race, Gethin had to help change the tyres on Lord Owen's car because it got a puncture while leaving Italy, as well. BRM could probably be a mini series/or long vid all on its own. EDIT: Also now I want AutoShenanigans to explain the Scunthorpe Problem, too as regards interwebs filters, too

Yes, Shitterton is a real place name in Dorset, that no longer has a problem with stolen town name signs: en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Shitterton
@AaronOfMpls
@AaronOfMpls 6 ай бұрын
@@k.r.baylor8825 Yup, it's a hamlet off one side of Bere Regis. The road through it is itself named "Shitterton", and its street sign kept getting stolen -- until they had it carved into a 1½-ton boulder set deep into the ground. The name dates back at least 1000 years, and comes from a nearby brook -- called the Shitter since it historically was where the privies drained to. The name didn't contain a swear word back then either; until the 14-1500s "shit" itself was the normal everyday word for "dung" or "poop".

Have a Great New Year, Jon. Some years ago (in 89/90) I was working in the US and a newspaper (might have been one of the national dailies) published a quiz and my boss at the time submitted a list of answers. Among the questions "What is the Worlds Longest suspension Bridge" to which the answer was "The Humber Bridge". However, the newspaper picked some other bridge in the USA which was only about 2./3rds as long. My boss complained and was told "Who has heard of the Humber Bridge?". ...but also.... Given that the Forth Road Bridge is of similar design, does that mean the cables of the Humber Bridge are decaying at a similar rate? Will it have weight restrictions imposed in the near future and maybe require a new Bridge to be built (a la Forth)? I dare say somebody somewhere (in the DfT?) has thought of these questions (or not).
@AxR558
@AxR558 6 ай бұрын
The humber bridge has a cable dehumidification system installed on it to try and combat corrosion. The system basically injects dry air into the cables at various points along the cable to keep water out of the cables. No doubt it'll need replacing at some point but that system should help reduce the rate of decay.

It was worth watching for the Humber bridge , I have been past both ends on the A63 hull side and the M180 but never crossed it . Thanks for that 😊

Happy New Year Jon & I’m pleased to see you in my county, Lincolnshire!! 😊😊 There are quite a few villages here with unusual names like Mavis Enderby so it there’s a possible subject for a vid in the future. 🤔

Loved this one Jon. I could’ve guessed that Wetwang would be in there somewhere. I’ve never heard that explanation of how it got the name before 🤣👍🏼. And the Humber Bridge bit (near to where I am) was great too. Happy New Year to you and keep up the great work 🎉😊
