A coal stove is not a good idea . However a duel stove is. Burns coal or wood. Wood cost free or cheap. Coal over $500 a ton. Both work good but the coal has a kick for when the temperature goes below freezing.

Hey Mark! Thanks for showing that people can live peacefully with snakes in their garden. I keep snakes as pets, and you have no idea how many times people share with me that they’ve killed a snake. That was one beautiful carpet python. He’s likely taking care of a rodent problem for you, or snacking on some birds.

Reminds me of a local neighbor - a kindly lady about 83 years young. She surprised me one day as we chatted by her house. She was so vehement about snakes and how she zeroes in on any and all with her lawn mower to kill them. I told her to call me and I'd take the animal to a safe spot. Crazy streak in an otherwise very nice person. Bottom line folks; do NOT teach your kids to hate.

I don't know if you can call it upscaling. But I have collected my townie's Christmas trees to use as a building material and trellis material for my garden. The spruce needles and branches are used both at the bottom of my raised beds, as mulch, and as cushions underneath grow bags. The branches under the grow bags slow them from getting mucky. Spruce branches have also helped me against cats using my beds as toilets.

Could you use the branches for trellises?
@Oktopia
@Oktopia 11 ай бұрын
@@vickiu2923 I use the trunk mostly. Only bigger branches stripped of needles would be suitable for plant support or material for trellises. Big branches could be used for smaller plants quite well, I think. It's a free resource so I'm happy to use it. Only dry it out well or you risk sticky residue when it's exposed to heat. :D

I think that ground up pine is a photochemical and prevents normal growth of plants. Might be too acidic. Under grow bags sounds maybe ok. I wonder if the plants on the trellises will do well. I could be wrong though. Maybe someone knows more than me about this one.

Creepy looking snake. My husband repurposed the kids play gym as a hanging plant stand. When collecting treasures from yard sales, etc, he would always say this will make a great plant stand. The kids are in their 30's. A shed now stands in that area. The giant sandbox became the compost area and my husband switched to container growing about 10 years ago. Now black-thumbed me is in charge and I have learned so much from you, Kevin and Jacques. I would love to have more raised beds but I'm not sure I can afford them.

Hi Mark. Just be aware that those zip ties will become brittle over a couple of years. You would be best to get some galvanised tie wire (it's cheap) and do up those cages before the zippies give way. Loved the python. He looked well fed but keep an eye on your chooks. Cheers, mate.
@apcolleen

Consider using aviation grade safety wire. The larger diameter is very strong, won’t rust, corrosion takes decades even outside and easy to twist, especially with the aviation twisting pliers. Keep costs down, use regular pliers.A roll of wire is not the cheapest but it’s reusable, there is a long on a single roll and easily obtained. I have purchased a roll of .042 (?) for my aircraft propeller safety wiring. It’s on the larger size so don’t use it often. With so much left over, smaller bits or even reused pieces, goes a long way around the ranch. I try to reuse or recycle things and since I already own the wire or recover it from the aircraft use, seems easy and a no-brainer. You can’t reuse safety wire for the original purpose on aircraft so if you throw it away, eliminates any possibility of using it for something else. I bring it home and wind up using all I have fairly quickly. Zip ties deteriorate in the UV rapidly. They last a few months to a year or so at best. If that’s not an issue, then are a good solution to the immediate need. For a more permanent yet easily moved need, safety wire is worth considering.

Back when we lived in the woods, I found an antique double washtub someone had abandoned. I dragged it home and made a great deep double planter. The spigots on the front still work and are handy if we get too much rain - there is drainage set up in the bottom to take advantage of the spigots. I close the spigots in hot dry weather to retain any water that filters down to keep it available to the plants. Just sprayed it with Rustoleum paint and give it a freshen up every few years. It has a embossed logo on the front of the tubs, so it's handy and attractive ; )

I love upcycling! And it’s downright necessary if you want to keep costs down since infrastructure is always the most expensive part of gardening and homesteading. My partner and I work in the construction trade and we end up with a lot of great materials that would have gone to the dump as excess from job sites. Any folks who are looking to find building materials for DIY projects should definitely reach out to friends in the trades, there is so much unnecessary waste as jobs wrap up and most contractors just have it hauled off as garbage because they already got paid for it and don’t want to store a bunch of random leftovers.

In zone 6b in the US, a greenhouse is a plus. Since I had to rebuild part of my old shed, and my chicken coop last year, I am sure I can build my greenhouse as soon as I get the materials together. FYI, I am an older lady pushing 70. I am NOT a carpenter, but the Master Carpenter helped me with tech help on how to do stuff, and it turned out well. My chickens like it. I reused a lot of tin, and leftovers hanging around, so did not need to buy as many supplies. I reused the old chicken wire also. I did the same with my kayak. She loved it, we'll call her Elly. Now, she chases her own squeaky balls down it and back up for that matter. I thought I might have to sand ridges on the slide, but, after the weather hits plastic, no problem. Sometimes, she comes down super fast to scare me, so precious. Hahahahaha thank all things for good things!!!!

I've turned a trampoline frame into a circular trellis by adding wire panels between the old safety net poles. And yes, you guessed it, attached with cable ties!!! A strategic cut in the old mat frame serves as an entrance. Grew tons of delicious pumpkins in the first season and now have a passionfruit vine going gangbusters!

Hi Mark! I love your videos and I've been watching for years.. but I don't think I've ever seen you make a video about or mention using edible mushrooms in the garden. I've heard that mushroom mycelium can be mixed into the mulch layer and it helps get nutrients to the plants that they wouldn't normally get, and you can harvest fresh mushrooms from time to time. I'm going to try this out with some wine cap mushroom mycelium this year, but would love to hear what you think or if you'd try growing mushrooms as well

We recently took our gym set down as well. It was used about as much as yours was. I thought about turning it into an adult swing area but not sure that would get used much more.

We repurposed a Little Tyke kiddie pool, with a drain plug, from a sandbox to a little wildlife pond. It worked very well as long as we covered it with bird netting at night to keep the raccoons from eating the fish.

My old kiddy pool is now a raised bed for Squash, Zucchini, & Pumpkins. Added drainage around the edges 1- 11/2 inches up on the sides to retain a bit more water, & have a few beans & sunflowers growing in there, too. Great idea with the fish! I've acquired an old hot tub, figuring to turn it into a fish pond. Need to learn more to do that, though!

We turned our playhouse into a garden shed. My partner changed the wood roof out for something that lets light through and added a couple shelves. I added a small chair and whiteboard, so it doubles as a work space and storage. This spring I’ll also test it as a greenhouse. The outside is painted in flowers and fairy castles, so it adds a bit of character to my garden space. I love it!

Mark, I turned an old cubby house into a two story chicken coop. I made some ladders with branches and sticks. It’s worked really well. Happy chickens , and a good use for the original structure.

Remember those giant Satellite Dishes from the '70s. We took ours off its mounting post, turned it upside down and secured it to four 4"x4"x8' posts. Then, planted Clematis at the base of each post for them to climb. TaDa...a beautiful arbor to sit under on hot days in the garden.

We rebuilt our kids' old playset into a stand for a hammock or our sky chairs. Also some of the excess materials went into building a trellis for our grape vines.

Yes zip ties are a DIY's best friend. I made a huge cage out of mesh wire to keep the squirrels from eating the fruit from my dwarf peach and apricot trees, and it's all held together with zip ties.

As a Horticulturist I wouldn't advise people to use plastic/ foam things in the ground. Plastics & other things of that nature break down microscopically over time and are in the soil for good. This in turn has contaminated the soil and can bleed into water sources in our environment. I highly commend recycling; but when possible send plastics to recycling centers and avoid buying them when there's more environmentally safe materials.
