Great to see a Great Spotted Woodpecker Woodpeckers tapping on the bark to feast on insects and larvae in tree trunks and lit up in full autumnal sunlight. When insects become scarce during winter, they seek berries and nuts, and are much more likely to be seen in your gardens feeding on the peanuts in your feeders. They do not harm their brain as they tap, or drum enthusiastically in the Spring to attract a mate, because they have special adaptations to their beak and skull which help them absorb the shock! Very fond of dear Woody Woodpecker!
