Great photo and dialogue. I went to Gansbaai 10 years ago and filmed great whites there on a ten day expedition. The sharks are naturally vulnerable. They themselves are not aware that they are scary looking to people or our definition of 'apex predators'. They try very hard to keep themselves safe and out of harms way, that was very apparent when seeing them swim around one another and around people and shark cages. They may be big and fearsome but the sharks themselves are not aware of human fear factors. Great photo, and I'm sure that now they are protected in many places big white sharks are out there just like in the 60's and 70's.

You know since I am deathly afraid of sharks I have always hated them with a passion but once I saw this video I now kind of understand what they are about. I actually found them quite majestic and beautiful in a way. There is something about this that just made me appreciate the balance of nature. I am still terrified to swim in the ocean though..

exactly the same that I feel , when I was really little I loved watching jaws and I loved sharks , I'm 14 now and I seriously think I have spawned a bad fear of them I breathe heavy and curse when I see an unexpected pic of one of the internet 😨
@writerconsidered9 жыл бұрын
+Chris S. A fear of these animals is perfectly logical. After all these jaws are not for kissing. However perspective is good too. You can appreciate them from afar without putting yourself in danger. I live in new england and we now have our own population of great whites off cape cod. Which is ironic considering this is where the original jaws movie was filmed and 25 yrs later the sharks came back. Every summer the sharks are sighted and sometimes they have to close the beaches for swimming. The sharks are still around when the beaches are open but no one knows that and nothing ever happens. However the most amazing part is the psychology of the visitors. They aren't so much afraid of the sharks as fascinated by their presence. We've become shark oglers and savers. There was a shark trapped a few years ago in a cape lagoon and couldn't get out and the whole state was routing for the shark and wanted to save it. I think it was woods hole oceanographic institute that finally came in and released the shark from the lagoon and we considered that a success story. In total there have been 2 attacks on people here in the last few years. One guy who I think had a leg injury from one and he lived and another on a couple of kayakers where the shark bit the kayak leaving the kayakers in the water and scared shitless BUT unharmed. But considering the number of people in the water and the number of sharks in the water at the same time it is fair to say the sharks are not looking for people and encounters are very rare. The credit for that can only go to the sharks, the people on the other hand are out of their element and have no way to know if there is a shark around or not. The sharks know we around from hundreds of yards away.

There is huge great white's in the Mediterranean but i havent seen many documentaries of them in that area as most filming is off the coasts of california and SA.20 years ago a large shark nudged our pedalo off the majorca coast and it was 15 foot plus it was only out of curiosity and stayed for about a minute then disappeared,so needless to say we were truly terrified but even though there were swimmers a few hundred feet away no-one was attacked which i believe they are just extremely curious creatures with a unfortunate reputation and if they were maneaters so many more ppl would be attacked and killed

Unfortunately large great white sightings in the Med have been very rare for decades, particularly east of Italy (Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean Seas, etc). Even though global populations elsewhere have been rebounding, it's difficult for biologists to estimate what the current numbers are there. In the past there have been numerous unsuccessful attempts to attract them for study. However, small adolescent whites have been caught over the years that at least proves there's still a breeding population there and they're not just transient. Sadly a large female (2000Kg) was caught and killed off the coast of Tunisia last October. Considering how rare they are in the region, the loss is significant.

maybe not all are maneaters but there have documented cases in which sharks(Great Whites and Bulls mostly) have developed a taste for humans.
