Billy Yulfo has worked at Zabar’s, a gourmet grocery store in Manhattan, for 17 years. He’d worked his way up from cashier to Assistant Manager. When the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City, he had to grapple with a new identity: that of an essential worker. “I can’t stay at home because I have two kids,” Yulfo says. “I won’t get paid if I don’t work, so I have to work. I have to put my health at risk every day out of necessity.” Read more: www.theatlantic.com/video/ind...

I am very well prepared and don't need to shop yet after a month. But I just volunteered to shop for some shut in seniors in my neighborhood who were asking for items on the neighborhood alert board and newsletter. I went to my favorite store and found some familiar workers with masks and gloves on. I had my mask but put on a bandana over it as the elastic was old and weak. It was raining so I wore my black cowboy hat. I should have had boots and spurs on, too. Upon checking out I hit on the idea of getting extra cash for the checkers braving this stuff. So I gave a $20 to each of the 2 checkers...who were very thankful but refused to accept money. So I left the money on their counters and on the way out said...''Take it! This is a reverse robbery! Just don't tell Mike (the store Manager). It was worth some laughs. Next time I shop I will go prepared and put cash in a small Thank You envelope and tell them to read it later. I'm not spending so my Social Security deposit goes pretty far. So thank you all Grocery Store Workers for risking your health so people can eat.

@kimmer6 ~ That's very thoughtful of you. Showing appreciation can go a long way even if it's a simple thank you. The workers probably refused for fear of being fired. Every retail job I've ever been at would fire you for accepting money or gifts... whether the manager catches it or the camera.

Self Discipline how is it selfish? I’m one of those “essential employee”. I’m still debating if it’s a blessing or a curse. For those that can’t work I feel for you whole heartedly. It’s sucks. I’m still bringing in money, but let’s say it is as contagious as they say it is, what good is money if I bring the disease home and infect my family? Idc what happens to me, but what about them? I’m the youngest in my company being 30 years old, my coworkers are all above 50. What if I have it and idk and they get sick? I still have to pump gas ,gather food, talk to people. if it’s as serious ppl are saying it is ,it’s worrisome. And we have every right to feel that way. The fear mongering is driving my supervisors insane implementing strict social distancing rules when Most of my work needs 2-3 ppl to get things done safely. ( I’m an electrician at a manufacturing facility in CT)It’s been very difficult to get proper ppe for everyone. Shit we can’t even get hand sanitizer.

That's the sad thing in America. Low wage workers are ridiculed. They're told, hey you should have been a lawyer or business man if you wanted money, but can a country exist of only business men and lawyers? Who would prep our food? Who would pick up our garbage? Can you imagine if garbage collections stopped, what would streets look like? Or cleaning crews stopped cleaning? And so on. This is why we need to stop treating our "ESSENTIAL" workers who feed us, who clean for us, who build for us, as "failed people" because that's how they are usually treated. Most of these people make around minimum wage, rarely have benefits, and are just treated poorly. These are the "poor" you keep hearing about, they're working but because they hardly earn enough, they are working and still poor, and we ridicule them for it, even though without them we would all starve to death. The American attitude towards ESSENTIAL workers really needs to change, permanently.

IDK. That seems to be jumping to conclusion. We don't know if the worker who passed away contracted covid 19 while doing their job or from elsewhere. The virus was circulating widely in NYC. Also it's not clear if that worker had already passed away at the time of the interview or when the employer might have been notified of their passing. Also, as an employer, you have to consider the negative publicity if you reveal too much, the impact on the business & knock-on effect on the remaining employees - is it better to shut down the store and lay off staff? Unfortunately it doesn't seem like the US has good social safety net for people who cannot work - eg laid off due to employer financial difficulty. Employers of essential workers do have a duty though to implement precautions to protect their workers & customers during times like this. Looks like Zabar is making an effort. Good that they are reporting abusive customers. Never understand why people have to behave so nasty to other people.

All the thanks and kind words of our customers are deeply appreciated. All the efforts of the store owners and management to keep us as safe as possible is admirable. What we need is Capital to admit we are all essential - and not just those of us still "going in" to work - All of Us. Without Labor, Capital will suffer too. How greedy must Capital be? How much greed should we tolerate? Why are we so sold on supporting a Capital class that we willingly submit to the Calculus of Sacrifice they are determined to use?

Not giving comments on that "Zabar's worker", a man that gave them 32 YEARS! This shows a lot about this company to not even to say thank you nor show any sympathy towards him. This Zabar's worker was my uncle, he was an incredible person, hardworking overall and to not be acknowledged is unbelievable. He will surely be missed, not from his workplace (clearly) but from his family and friends! Just to add on, he did love his job and all of his coworkers. He was happy to work there and was grateful to have his job even up to his last couple of days! This is why, them not giving any comments hurts so much! Please people stay indoor and safe!

I always find this bizarre. I work at Stop and Shop and you see people retire with 40+ years at the company and you can barely get some store managers to give them a gift card and a cake. One lady in the deli at my store was retiring in late February this year because of her COPD. She walked a mile to work every day and worked 40+ hours a week in spite of being part time too. When she put in her two weeks notice the store manager tried to pressure her into staying another three weeks. Would've put her smack in the middle of all the panic shopping with none of the measures we have in place to protect people. Admittedly no one knew the pandemic was about to hit but this has really put a spotlight on how the harm caused by the callousness of management was overlooked because we didn't have an ongoing pandemic. Thank god we have a union to put a rest to a lot of that bullshit.

I'm happy to be seeing more coverage on this❤

Yeah, I remember a women got arrested for coughing on produce in a store. That's why we need to treat everything that is not from the house as a potential virus vector, since some people just want the world to burn. If I remember correctly the women was charged, and I think the DOJ considers it a third degree biological terrorist attack.

As someone who once lived near Zabars in the UWS of Manhattan, I have to tell you that I cried cried cried when I heard that someone working for Zabars died of COVID. I do think that the owner of Zabars should not have let Atlantic interview them. Unfortunately, lots of grocer store clerks in NYC are dying from COVID19. Very sad they are great people.

May the Lord bless and comfort and strengthen and protect every person providing a service to the public -- grocery stores, delivery services, police, fire and healthcare workers -- especially those who are moving the carts, stocking the shelves, bagging the purchases, all cashier's, deli and bakery personnel, everyone in fast food service -- An unsung hero is that young man right there -- working everyday to provide for his family. Scared, but still putting a smile on his face to raise the spirit of someone else -- the customer. Wow. Great documentary.
