A Growth and Purification of the Consciousness is the only Remedy (TE 274)

Prof. Jagdish Vyas Memorial Lecture Series, SAYFNA. The talk by Dr Alok Pandey is about the remedy suggested by the Mother about the human problems. It lies in a progressive growth of consciousness and its purification.

A GROWTH AND PURIFICATION OF THE CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE ONLY REMEDY - The Mother.
Sri Aurobindo has told us and we are convinced by experience that above the mind there is a consciousness much wiser that the mental wisdom, and in the depths of things there is a will much more powerful that the human will.
All our endeavour is to make this consciousness and this will govern our lives and action and organise all our activities. It is the way in which the Ashram has been created. Since 1962 when Sri Aurobindo retired and gave me full charge of it (at that time there were only two rented houses and a handful of disciples) all has grown up and developed like the growth of a forest, and each service was created not by any artificial planning but by a living and dynamic need. This is the secret of constant growth and endless progress. The present difficulties come chiefly from psychological resistances in the disciple who have not been able to follow the rather rapid pace of the "sadhana"' and the yielding to the instruction of mental methods which have corrupted the initial working.
A growth and purification of the consciousness is the only remedy. (9 March, 1964)

It is really an experience to listen to you Alokda and follow consciousness and will of The Divine and put into practice all of it. It is difficult sometimes to distinguish which action to take, but as one surrenders and call for the Divine Will and Grace to act, things take place in right order. Dear Renu Desire is a seeking for horizontal expansion or growth within the magic circle of ignorance within which we are presently imprisoned. It is a growth in quantity and not in adding a new quality to life. It is born out of the ignorant vital in man that is ever restless for change since it has stopped getting joy from its objects. Aspiration, on the other hand is something like a vertical ascension. It seeks newer and greater heights, new capacities, new qualities. Its urge comes from the soul and carries within it combines intensity with patience. Therefore a seeking for things that are higher and greater than our present mundane existence would not so much qualify as a desire as for aspiration. It is a subjective inner change rather than merely a change of objects outside. Desire and its offspring ambition and lust give us the illusion of progress and thereby keep us tied to the outposts of ignorance while expanding its circle. Aspiration on the other hand breaks through the circle and fence of ignorance and hence carries within it the key to all true progress. Affectionately Alok bhai

Even I find difference in teaching amongst god realised sants... yogananda paramhansa says do not try to change the world ...world will go like that...you practice kriya n try to come out from this world...while Sri Aurobindo says world needs to be changed.....divine will decent n change it .. who is right n wrong god knows...the expectations from struggling humanity is too much beyond their capacity..how many colleagues of vivekananda got universally consciousness being next to him all the time...it means what is expected from common humanity is too complex to achieve...that's why even if we try to change we can't ...not all can become master of senses ...nature is very strongly keeping us away from realisation... that's why very few realises this every given era...

First thing is, we cannot change the world. We can change ourselves by aspiring and opening to the Divine. Everyone can aspire (in his own time) to change and change is a consequence based on the sincerity in our aspiration. Thus the world (which is nothing but many aspiring individuals) gets automatically changed and the results will be be visible then. We can never change others. We can inspire others for them to be other than what they are.

Dear Santosh Fully appreciate this honest comment. Yes there are differences in teachings and even the experience of different saints. These differences arise because each person has approached the Divine from a certain angle and hence according to his approach he experienced one or other aspects of the Divine. However since the Divine is Infinite it is impossible to really fit Him into one or other category. Besides He is a living and fully conscious or rather superconscious Infinite hence He can mould Himself into the framework of experiences sought by the seeker. Though the base experience is similar such as Light, Peace, Bliss, Wideness, the details are different. It was however given to Sri Ramakrishna to synthesise these different experiences. Sri Aurobindo took it further to reconcile the Divine experience with the experience of matter and material life. It is important therefore to understand the importance of our core aspiration and of faith. As the Gita puts it beautifully thus that 'As men approach me through whatsoever faith, so do i receive them.' As to change of nature it is of course not easy. But the difficult is not impossible. There are number of instances of sudden conversations in spiritual as well as ordinary life such as that of Augustine, Jagai and Madhai, Angulimal, Valmiki, King Ashoka among others. Even modern psychology admits that human nature can change. There are Conditions of course, most importantly a genuine will and aspiration to change, faith in the possibility, perseverance, and most of all, opening to something higher and greater. Logically too if we admit that there is indeed a Divine Consciousness that is at once Omniscient and omnipotent then what would be impossible to it. Yes all may not be ready or even seek to change it. After all everyone is not meant to undertake everything. It is a question of calling, the faith and will to be. But for those who have the calling they must go ahead undeterred by the challenges on the path. Their aspiration is the sign that what they cannot achieve today will be done tomorrow. love alok

@@AuroMaa I only meant to say that divine needs to respond faster to the gud people's call. Its putting lot of terms n conditions which is pushing people to loose faith. It's too slow with very low success rate. Where as evil powers are acting much faster grabbing minds, convincing people. .......Now as you talked abt facing challenges on this path why? If it's so challenging n troublesome why someone would like to make life even more challenging than what he already has. It's not a question which I m asking rather this is what people thinking internally (but never tells). Hence, already loaded with tonnes of life issues humanity seeking easier path to survive and the easiest path is to follow the trend which is evil but more suitable in current scenario. When divine becomes more responsive than dark powers automatically gud people will shift gear towards divinity. And we also need to understand that exceptions can not be examples to set. The divine (capable of anything) should not be dependent on people's desire to be pursued to descend on earth rather respond quickly on one call to save faith. Than you see how society changes overnight. It's not always required to give test n pass , no one is interested in all that. If divine doesn't respond people shift to the one which responds faster (dark). To restore faith it's the divine who needs to respond faster not people to pursue harder as majority has no patience left.

dear brother It would be certainly good if God took our advice even though He seems to know better and yet we have hardly heeded Him. Actually He should have consulted us before the whole business of creation began. But we were unfortunately not there or perhaps we were in some seed state when we agreed to get into this whole affair. Nevertheless we can't blame Him for not giving us humans the freedom to organize this world better than He would. But the report card of humans seems to be worse with history of loot and greed and weakness and guilt and cheap pleasures preferring the thrills of the flesh over the bliss of Brahman. We rejected and continue to reject His all time open offer to arrive at a better and beautiful and diviner life and readily grab the arm of the Asura that fills us with doubt and anger and vengeance and fear and revolt and despair. The only place we seem to have left for Him in our self governed desire driven rich egoistic life is to grant us miraculous favors or expect Him to punish the corrupt and play the hangman. Unfortunately that is not His job description leading to a mismatch between our expectations of Him and His work in real time. Not that He cannot or does not do miracles. In fact they happen all the time. Only when we know the process we don't call it a miracle. But if we look at the amazing chain of cause and effect we will start seeing many more miracles than we presently acknowledge. We shall then see H8s Divine Purpose in failure, the Wisdom that punishes virtue with defeat and thrones the wicked and the corrupt. To understand that Wisdom we have to step back and look at events through large spaces of Time and then we shall see how evil was a good in the making or a good in the passing. We shall also see how darkness ploughed the hard rocky soil of human nature so that grains of goodness can be sown and the harvest of lasting joy reaped through it. We shall then also see how our goodness is as much a facade and our virtue a cloak to hide the evil in our hearts. Let us bare our hearts truly to God and pray for His Light and Truth and Love to grow, let us seek Harmony and Beauty refining our thoughts and feelings and we shall see Him changing His methods. As is his raw material so is the process. And yes everything in the world is a process and a process implies conditions. And what really are the conditions that we find so tough to follow, - to seek Truth instead of falsehood, to choose Beauty and harmony and light instead of chaos and ugliness and disorder, to choose Love over hate and lust, Freedom over attachments and possession, surrender to the Grace rather than be driven by ignorant self will. Are they not logical consequences of what we want this world to be, - God or no God? How can we choose darkness and ugliness and expect the world to be otherwise. Besides we need to remember that The Grace and Love is always unconditional and for everyone. The conditions are only to make us receive it rightly. We cannot receive the holiest of waters if the pot is turned downwards and the mouth is closed. We may say let Him force enter our life. Well He does but then we cry because He is an unwanted Guest or else the clay pot cracks and breaks under the tremendous pressure of His Force. So you see... i am not saying whether man has no right to complain. I am only saying that it doesn't help us one bit. Instead we should sincerely try to understand and for a change try out the remedies He has been prescribing since ages. Of course each one is free to have their views about self and world and God and learn by following it to its logical and practical extreme. I am only putting His side of the story to consider. In any case whatever it be we should never become a cynic who, as someone has rightly said knows the price of everything but not its value. alok bhai
