I so love this talk, mate! I came back because Paris is now allowing folks to plant stuff on the pavements, due to lack of green space. I'm inspired to start gardening again, and I am going to do it this time! I'll start off indoors with herbs (due to the colder weather this time of year in England) but will get the outside ready for next year and will get the neighbours involved too! Thank you, so much.

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Steve Jobs

If you even cut your food bill by a quarter, that's still hundreds of dollars (pounds in my case) saved per year, healthier food, something to do with other people, and building a skill that may act as a fall back for a little extra money. Crops and flowers are more interesting than grass anyway

This TED Talk *literally* changed my life! The very next day after watching it, my young son and I went out and planted herbs and vegetables in a plot out in front of our house. The next season, we began gardening with the children in the international Montessori school we founded in central Japan, using that produce to prepare school lunches. A few years later, we sold it all and my family and I moved to Italy, where I studied sustainable food systems at a cooking school in Sicily. Now, we travel the world full time, learning about and sharing the languages and global culinary traditions of every place we've lived (and even some of the places we still want to go!). Thank you, Mr. Finley, for sharing your passion with the world in such a powerful way!!! #plantsomeshit

Why am I crying! As an African when my feet touched American soil I was appalled at the waste of green grass and sprinklers..green perfectly trimmed lawns. I asked my host why are people not putting this so much energy and water on lawns with edible plants instead. Giving the fact that I was already traumatized seeing unhealthy Americans at the airport and everywhere my eyes looked. Seeing this man speak my mind is a blessing!! Respect!!

Gardens are not only good for people's individual health, they're also good for the city's environment. Many plants can absorb things like smog and other harmful chemicals, and rooftop gardens can help reduce temperatures on the streets down below. They're also very effective at increasing biodiversity and social cohesion while also reducing stress.

Wowowowowowow Katebushfan I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean 'take over feel' as in some organisation taking over the town? I've not had any experience with community gardens here in England.
@JimGriffOne9 жыл бұрын
Wowowowowowow Katebushfan I think I know what you mean. A friend of mine went to a protest and took food she had collected from local organisations that made donations. She was just an individual doing her own thing for the people there. She soon found out that a heirarchy of control freaks had set itself up. The food she was going to hand out had been co-opted and put to the side. She was "NOT ALLOWED" to hand it out herself, even though she was the one who brought it there. I dislike most community-oriented activities because control freaks always get in charge of people. When things are made common or public, you just know someone will take control over it and start making rules "for the greater good".
@JimGriffOne9 жыл бұрын
Wowowowowowow Katebushfan Common purpose makes me cringe. I see the purple and green colours of their campaign everywhere here, even on the housing agency I was with at one point in my life. I had a bad experience with them when they attempted to exert a "right" to enter my flat at "any time" they deemed necessary. I claimed my right to privacy as an individual and they simply shat all over my claim, threatening to evict me over something they had knowledge of for years but had not acted upon at the time (a friend stayed over for a few nights). They used sneaky tactics and colour of law. We are living in a world where control freaks attempt to convince us that "law and order", "protocols" and "policies" are going to save us from every bad thing that could possibly occur. The question we must ask is: "Why would anyone go out of their way to try to make our lives better?" The answer is simple. "Because they want to control our lives and anything associated with it." They have no real interest in helping people other than themselves.

As I was thinking of how like that's really going to make up for the smog?! Obviously she was'nt talking about South L.A. where it does'nt look like they're going to open up a Whole Foods or gourmet healthfood restaurants anytime soon. Whereas, the community of Beverly Hills and West L.A., etc. only several miles away can afford to eat better and healthier. Rich or poor, it's everybody's right to eat healthy , and eat good! Kudos to Ron Finley for being a mighty warrior to do something about it in his community! Love this TedTalk. With so much going on in 2020, this was so motivational and inspirational. Yes, I feel even more honored he is a black man thinking outside the box. I specifically enjoy this because you read so much negativity about black men from the media, online trolls, women etc that it shows me all of us see way too much of what is wrong and no where near enough of what is good and positive. I also like how he highlighted the challenges and the laws designed to keep people down instead of uplifting them. If they get caught up in the system, they become a statistic racists use to justify their line of thinking. But drilling into the numbers, how many of Mr. Finleys would we find? Every city must incorporate this for the public use. A whole block and more! put people to work this way!!
@johnkim78028 жыл бұрын
+Patricia Gayle Perkins-Christensen Even though I am in total alignment with what he does I am in no ways a fan of government incorporating such policies as a public stance. Once we allow government to do such, many potential side effects such as the possibility of excessive regulation on certain plants being grown, potential unionization of the gardeners, possibilities of corrupt policies redistributing money for such disproportionately, etc. exist. And these policies won't work for certain cities due to other dynamics involved.
@pgpc64488 жыл бұрын
Honorable, honest, self worth is needed in our society for any good policy to work.
@johnkim78028 жыл бұрын
+Patricia Gayle Perkins-Christensen Of course. I couldn't agree more. But let's begin first w/ the idea of a policy whether it's good or bad. Is it really necessary to even implement policy for many things when many of them happen to be rigid and leading to the potential for corruption? I don't want cities to incorporate these ideas for public use because the city-managed projects then would differ from how community groups manage these projects. Furthermore, there are numerous studies showing inefficiency in government spending and this would be no different w/ much waste in the projects the city would implement.

Hi :-) I'm Canadian... This guy is part of the reason I love America... He's keeping America FREE and in doing so, he's keeping Canada Free... Canada is a "Constitutional Monarchy", which sucks... I would like Canada to be a Republic and FREE, not merely Free... I love you bro - Ron... Keep it up :-)

I like the way Mr. Finley thinks. I love gardening. I think people like him help our world by expanding the consciousness of those who take food, and where it comes from, for granted. It's hard work but it so rewarding growing your own food.

I do wonder why ANYONE needing food or wanting better food, don't help themselves more. In ways like this. A lot of it is complacency and status quo. THANK you for doing more than your part. Citizens need to help and step up for ourselves and America. I'm glad you are helping, thank you.

Ron and our Food Ganstas out there, good to be in here. As a strategist I can tell you that it may seem on the surface a food monopolization and dehumanization. Yes, it is also that war. We need to grow our own food like we print money. There is a much bigger war behind that. It is the fight for water. South Central is eliminated for any options for using water for growing food. The political manipulation is much more upstream. So, if you started vertical farming, aquaponics farming that only use a tiny amount of water, it would be easier to get the dice rolling. The City leaders are so small compared to the ones controlling water, they really don't have wiggle room. Install rain water catchers and build it on top of agro-tech that use very little water.

+Yuki Togawa You are so correct in proposing such! Vertical agriculture is a growing trend which is becoming a popular and sustainable trend. Israel is the driest place in the world yet has so much agricultural efficiency that it exports fruit and vegetables. Vertical agriculture is among the key technologies they innovated to accomplish this.

In the mediterranean countries fruit trees grow everywhere even next to high ways. The people there are one of the most healthy ones in the world. Can you imagine someone being arrested or even killed by police for planting food and trying to keep the neighbourhood looking proper? I'm scared that this is where the governement controlling all of us will take us to.
