Was it business because people wouldn't buy it or because it is set up that way for a reason? Seeing your world with in another world brought tears to my eyes. I so love this talk, mate! I came back because Paris is now allowing folks to plant stuff on the pavements, due to lack of green space. I'm inspired to start gardening again, and I am going to do it this time! I'll start off indoors with herbs (due to the colder weather this time of year in England) but will get the outside ready for next year and will get the neighbours involved too! Thank you, so much.

If you even cut your food bill by a quarter, that's still hundreds of dollars (pounds in my case) saved per year, healthier food, something to do with other people, and building a skill that may act as a fall back for a little extra money. Crops and flowers are more interesting than grass anyway

Been asking myself (and others) a similar question last couple of years. Why do we need lawns? I'm not going to eat that grass. My kids can do cartwheels on it but other than that whats the point? I'd rather harvest food than cut grass.

Wowowowowowow Katebushfan I think I know what you mean. A friend of mine went to a protest and took food she had collected from local organisations that made donations. She was just an individual doing her own thing for the people there. She soon found out that a heirarchy of control freaks had set itself up. The food she was going to hand out had been co-opted and put to the side. She was "NOT ALLOWED" to hand it out herself, even though she was the one who brought it there. I dislike most community-oriented activities because control freaks always get in charge of people. When things are made common or public, you just know someone will take control over it and start making rules "for the greater good".

Wowowowowowow Katebushfan Common purpose makes me cringe. I see the purple and green colours of their campaign everywhere here, even on the housing agency I was with at one point in my life. I had a bad experience with them when they attempted to exert a "right" to enter my flat at "any time" they deemed necessary. I claimed my right to privacy as an individual and they simply shat all over my claim, threatening to evict me over something they had knowledge of for years but had not acted upon at the time (a friend stayed over for a few nights). They used sneaky tactics and colour of law. We are living in a world where control freaks attempt to convince us that "law and order", "protocols" and "policies" are going to save us from every bad thing that could possibly occur. The question we must ask is: "Why would anyone go out of their way to try to make our lives better?" The answer is simple. "Because they want to control our lives and anything associated with it." They have no real interest in helping people other than themselves.

Once we allow government to do such, many potential side effects such as the possibility of excessive regulation on certain plants being grown, potential unionization of the gardeners, possibilities of corrupt policies redistributing money for such disproportionately, etc. exist. And these policies won't work for certain cities due to other dynamics involved.

Honorable, honest, self worth is needed in our society for any good policy to work.

Is it really necessary to even implement policy for many things when many of them happen to be rigid and leading to the potential for corruption? I don't want cities to incorporate these ideas for public use because the city-managed projects then would differ from how community groups manage these projects. Furthermore, there are numerous studies showing inefficiency in government spending and this would be no different w/ much waste in the projects the city would implement.

Good people run these types of gardens, they know rules & basic policies

Israel is the driest place in the world yet has so much agricultural efficiency that it exports fruit and vegetables. Vertical agriculture is among the key technologies they innovated to accomplish this.
