We’ve just returned from our ski holiday over New Years! Would highly recommend!! My top tip for keeping phone battery from dying in really cold weather is I take those small hand warmer packs from Home Bargains and put it next to the phone (in a pouch) in my rucksack! We go again to Sestriere in April! Lucky to ski twice this year. I find Aldi ski clothing excellent aswell.

I’ve enjoyed your skiing vlogs. I learnt to ski when I was in my early 30’s and love it ! Have been lucky to pack in a few trips a season since then and am now fairly experienced and have spent a fair amount of time researching gear and I usually book for my group of about 10 people. My top tips: Buy the best gear you can afford. Especially goggles (I use Oakley prizm which are exceptional). Also socks - smart wool are fantastic. Can wear more than one day no problem. Buy your own boots if you possibly can and get them professionally fitted with moulded footbeds. Revolutionise your skiing and comfort. Owning your own skis isnt necessary and it can be nice to try a few different pairs of skis during your holiday. Always take a photo of your lift pass as soon as you buy it incase you lose it and need to get a new one issued. Ideally don’t ski alone Always have lessons. Essential for beginners obviously but there’s always more to learn and Improve on right through to expert/off piste level. So now and again you could always book the odd lesson. Ski train from St Pancras is a great way to get to the alpes. Over night arrive v early on the Saturday so you get an extra days skiing . You can also leave late on the last Saturday so you turn a weeks holiday into 8 days of skiing. Consider booking independently- search chalets on chaletfinder.com it pretty much lists every single chalet in existence. Private transfer all the way - coaches take ages and always waiting for people. Plus too many stops. Catered chalets are ideal for large groups . Hotels or self catered accom for less people can work better as you have more flexibility on eating out and are not constrained to meal times which means more time for Apres !! Always carry a map and Learn how to read it - don’t rely on others as you may well get lost at some point. Always carry a small back pack. I use a flat profile Dakine one. Don’t need to take it off to get on the chair. Also carry camelback inside with at least 1 litre water with energy tablet inside. Really makes massive difference to stamina levels through the day. I think that’s it, at least that will do! Enjoy your skiing it’s amazing and being in the mountains is priceless.
@lauragatehouse7935
@lauragatehouse7935 3 жыл бұрын
Just to add . Items in back pack are - spare goggle lense for flat light or bright light whichever you aren’t using at that time. Sunglasses, hat, suncream, spare layer, water, snacks (sweets and energy bar), money, spare map, small first aid (paracetamol, plasters etc).

Great video, really informative! Just want to add a safety note on skiing in a hoody/t-shirt when it's warm - when you fall the lack of protection can cause really nasty burns (my sister had to get rescued off the mountain, and spent a month with her arms in bandages and obviously couldn't ski again for the rest of the holiday) if you get into a slide on a fall so do this at your own risk!

Although I have never been skiing my whole life but have shown interest in dry slope skiing when I was younger (which I never got around to doing), this is a very useful video and I like your back story about how you started skiing. If I travel abroad, I prefer to pay for things in their local currency in cash because it’s easier for me than using a debit card.

How have I only now found this video blimey it’s been out for a year!! This video is so so helpful and really detailed, something I was really hoping to find on KZbin hehe! 😁 I’ve been skiing 4 times with school and college but not for at least 3 and a half years, I blame Uni and work haha, I’m looking to finally book my own trip for the new year hopefully, I have been looking at Crystal deals for January, but I’m obviously new to booking a ski trip so I want the best deal. For someone newer to booking do you think it would be helpful to speak over the phone to ski holiday advisers from different companies to see what they can offer? I would as well obviously need to hire boots and skis, again thanks for making this video even if I’m only finding it now! And you bet I’ve subscribed! 🙂

Make sure you do them up properly. The key is to keep your ankle in the back, but still be able to wiggle your toes. Do the TOP clasps / buckles FIRST, then the bottom ones. Don’t do TOO tight first thing in the morning, as your feet warm up and expand / swell with the altitude. Adjust when you need it during the day! Hope that helps?!
