Skiing with someone better challenges you but also teaches you because you can see what they do differently. It can get tiring though. I've been on both sides of the equation and empathy on both sides is very valuable especially if you are the better skier. Luv and Peace.

As someone who is standing on skis every winter since I was 2, I have to say it is really great to see you getting into it and showing the world how one can always start picking it up and enjoy it from the beginning. Keep it up, having this much progress after only one year is really impressive!

A few things to note and things I've found teaching mates to give the quickest improvement... 1. Head and eyes up. Don't looks down, look ahead. Far ahead. 2. When turning, don't force the turn. Place your weight on the outside and wait. You will gain speed, but live with it and be patient until the turn is completed. 3. Relax and enjoy. Being tense makes it difficult. It also hurts much much when you fall. Getting over these first 3 points will accelerate you towards being an intermediate skiier. Happy skiing!

Mate. I went on a ski holiday for the first time with uni 24 years ago and I caught the bug. Your video hit home because I decided to get better and started going to MK every Saturday.. 3 hours a week. The following year I progressed so much just like you did! I ended up doing seasons in the Alps, riding for the fledgling GB freestyle squad and living a full life in the mountains. My passion is now and always has been for 20 years skiing and nothing gives me more joy than ripping it up with my kids who have loved a full life being skiers since the age of 2! Love this vid 🔥❤️

I'm going on a skiing trip with my in-laws in two weeks. They do this every year, but my family never did. I really want to join and I'm trying to take some lessons here and there, but it feels stressful because I'm trying to catch up in a very short time with what my boyfriend, his family, and friends have built up over years. Your video gives me some hope that I shouldn't be too hard on myself and that I should be proud of the progress I make. So, thank you.

The mountain is a beautiful place to be even without skiing. It’s important to enjoy it! With lessons and hard work you can become a good skier in time, but you can appreciate the après ski and mountain sunsets straight away. Go for a swim and sauna after a long day on the slopes, or when the weather is bad. Go to the pub for a few pints. Ski resorts are my favourite place to be, everyone is happy to be in nature and doing what they love.

I am 55 years old originally from Egypt 🇪🇬 and have been living in the United States over the past quarter century and picked up skiing a couple of years ago and it is a thrill skiing with my sons on the snow instead of just watching them coming down the slope from a distance. It is so much fun. You have definitely improved and you are right comparing your own progress year after year. I am sure in no time you will be skiing on steeper terrain with ease and confidence. Thanks for sharing. It is inspiring.

You remind me so much of my husband who started skiing 25 years ago age 35. He was not ever interested in going before but from the first time he put skis on, he was hooked. In his second ski trip, he was going down anything (always having lessons as you can never be too good for expert advice) and now he is an avid off piste skier. We joined a local dry slope ski club in the early days and were trained to race. Best way to learn technique. We are still totally obsessed with skiing and even spent 3 months in the Alps a few years ago. Have done our first trip this season and off again in a few weeks. An expensive hobby though! Keep it up, Alex, you are brilliant 😊

the fact you hit a run as steep as you did at 11:09 in less than a year is insane. Just went up to the top of a ski resort in the ALPS with no map of where the easiest route was to go down, in less than a year. Big ups, people dont usually progress as fast as this.

That was a huge improvement in one year, don't criticize yourself , you are doing great , you are from a non skiing country, it's alien to us ,these guys have been skiing their whole lives, it;s there on their doorstep. When you come out of your turn lift up then lean when you are making your turn,, Lift and Lean ,get that in your head Lift and Lean. The lean is the initiation of your turn Practice on wide blue runs where you don't have to worry about it being too steep and you going too fast. Enjoy and be safe.

Seeing this just before going to ski tomorrow. It will be my 8th time in skies as I’ve started learning this year at almost 35. Finally I see what the hype is all about and why so many people fall in love with skiing. It helped me appreciate and love snow even more. And it makes me sad to see how hot those last few winters are 😢 I want to improve my parallel turns and get rid of fear on steeper hills. Seeing this video actually just motived me even more to not give up. It was a very humble and educational video! Thanks a lot!

Some good skiing advice for anyone, of any level- 1) keep your shins in contact with the front of your boots (this helps keep your knees bent, which helps with stability. It also helps you absorb bumps and uneven terrain) 2) Steer with your feet, not your shoulders. Put presser on the inside/outside of your skis to turn so you're not flinging your upper body around 3) Bellybutton stays downhill 4) If you're trying a new technique for the first time and it feels weird, you're probably doing it right. Keep going! 5) It can take a long time for new skills to click, and even if you've been skiing for a while, there's still loads you can learn and improve on. But it doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes it can take years to get better at 1 specific element of skiing- it's not easy, keep going!
@JB91710
@JB91710 9 ай бұрын
1. Correct. 2. 100% incorrect. 3. To start a new turn, you look and then face your entire upper body down the hill as you change your weight and balance from your downhill to your uphill foot. 4. Not necessarily to the point of not thinking that at all. Doing it the right or wrong way will feel uncomfortable until you get used to it. 5. With incorrect teaching which is what you will get no matter where you go, it will be just as you described. But it doesn't have to be like that at all with the correct teaching. I found a skier that was a complete twisted knot of humanity with absolutely no clue what to do but he had been doing it for long enough that the fear factor was gone. It took me 10, TEN, minutes to completely transform him into a technically correct skier. Now, he had the correct and easy to remember information to work with until he could gain his confidence doing it.

I was as same as you 1 year ago. When I heard that at 25-30 it's a late period to begin skiing, at 42 years old me I thought it would be a very hard time to learn. And it was indeed, but with a lot of practice and 10 hours with instructors I was able to achieve level 5, like my last instructor told me. With hard work everything it's possible.

Can't wait to get better!

Good job, Alex! Skiing is definitely something you need to learn at your own rate, not anyone else's. I haven't been skiing in years, but I always hit the dry slopes a few times before my holidays just to dust off the rust a little. I also discovered that snow is so much easier to skii on then a dry slope, so for all the beginners out there, don't panic if you're still struggling before your holiday. When you're still learning, it's ALWAYS a good idea to book some time with an instructor on your first day to get your trip going the right way from day 1. Thanks for sharing your journey, Alex, it's supper helpful for new skiers to see how quickly they can improve if they put the time in 😊👍👍👍👍

I'm so glad this vid popped up on my screen. I've only been skiing for 2 seasons in the US. I can't believe I waited 57 years to try it! I agree it's one of the most fun things I've ever done. Your journey in learning reminds me of the struggles I also faced. I can also relate to the joyful feeling when reaching new milestones. My skill level is about the same as yours at the end of this video. I've done the easy runs and some intermediate as well. No expert yet. I almost didn't watch this because of the length of the video, but once it started I couldn't turn it off because I could relate to so much of it. I'm jealous of you because you got to learn in one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I hope to someday get to ski in a place like that. Congrats on your progress, good luck in your future skiing and cheers from the US.

Hi Alex. A very nice movie. It is very instructive to see your progression on skis from your perspective, from total beginner to intermediate. Many people could benefit greatly from seeing it, both people who learn to ski, and people who work as ski instructors. I have worked 20 years as a ski instructor and have always skied. I'm starting to get better at understanding now, but I see that many new ski instructors with the same background as me, struggle to empathize with the experience of a beginner. In fact, many of the best instructors are instructors who have backgrounds like you. They have the ability to empathize, and know to a greater extent what works and what does not work based on their own experience.

I miss the Austrian Alps, which is the first and last place I tried learning to ski. You had much better instruction than I did. We were primarily skiing in ice with some bumps called Mogels 😮. Not sure of the spelling on that, but I would be merrily zooming along feeling great when all of a sudden, I’d be on the ground and sure enough, had hit a mogul. 🙄😂 The hardest part for me was figuring out the ski lifts. They had one where you put this thin piece of plastic on your butt and it would pull you up, but I just fell off every time. Still the whole experience was a BLAST 😊. It’s been 37 years since I was there. Enjoy!! ❤

I never really comment, but I just had to mention the insane improvement you've gone through in just one year, I was almost speechless when I saw the first-day-after-a-year footage. I started skiing in school about 8 years ago I think and I've gone every year with my father since, but I only got to the point where you're at now after about 4-5 years, so I really find it amazing. (But it also might just be that I'm a really bad learner haha..) Skiing just makes all your problems go away (for a week, at least), it's the best thing ever. Quite simply the best part of the year.

That is the most inspiring ski video I have ever seen!!!! You can be proud. Catching the essence of what skiing is all bout, as a beginner. I, myself have only been skiing for 4 seasons now (with covid in between), and beginning really to catch on. (I am twice your age, so it requires some training to stay fit enough) 🙂 You have felt he satisfaction of being able to pick up more speed and control in such a short time, and to me it looks damn impressive. I did see your first ski video (and liked it) a year ago sitting by the computer, dreaming og the next trip to Wagrain (Austria). Keep on skiing! - The Dane

Great editing! I was smiling watching your progression. I started my skiing journey last year as an adult in my 30s, fell in love, and now am planning ski holidays for the next two years.

Excellent progress Alex. You have come on leaps and bounds in a year. Keep going to the indoor Snowdome and maybe get a lesson or two there as well. Key is to keep the weight forward over the downhill ski and not sit back. The exercises where you lift the uphill ski and have the ski poles at 90deg to the slope are excellent. If you find a quiet slope, combine them so that you really focus on your body position and using the hips, legs and ankles to control the skis rather than swinging your chest and shoulders. (I’m an ex instructor!!!) For only the 2nd time on snow, you are getting really good.

I have been skiing my whole life and at first thought this video would be a bit boring to watch since I already know how to ski, but actually it made me so happy to see you put effort into learning and getting better so fast. Also, I'm always afraid of going on a ski trip by myself. Since I have not many friends who know how to ski and my parents always go during holiday season which is too expensive for me. Seeing you going on those trips alone and being happy makes me wanna try it as well. Thanks for creating this awesome video and sharing your progress with us. 😁

I used to ski every year, when I was your age. It was wonderful. I went back to the top of the Hintertux glacier a few years back - after a 25 year absence, and it was magical to be back. I didn't ski down to the village this time, but I did mentally! As well as the wonderful Gröstl, you have to have a Jagatee or 2 in a mountain hut! You'll fly down the slopes!

Love it, love it, love it. I watched your video when you learnt to a year ago and can I just say, the continuity of revisiting this a year on is a really nice touch you put with your videos!! Plus the sense of adventure you capture in all of them is inspiring. I started watching you when you had your channel with your brother but I now get just as much enjoyment watching your adventures. It's relatable to me, I'm an angler but some of the equally good parts of my life have been exploring and adventuring like you are

It happens that I went through most of what you did, but in a shorter period of time (started by the beginning of winter, now living near a ski resort). I really enjoyed seeing my mistakes and improvements throughout the video. Makes it cozy and yet informant. You are good, very good, at what you do. Keep it up!

I got your first ski video as a recommendation from youtube when I decided to take my first ski lesson a couple of weeks ago and in the end I got hooked by all the other of your adventures/journeys, specially the beekeeping and now seeing how you stayed with the 'ski bug' and improved so much in one year is such an inspiration to do the same, even for an old rag like me (48yo), keep it up Alex! Cheers from Canada.

Nice progress! I've been skiing since 1990 at the age of 4. I love it so much that I'm watching someone who is just learning in my free time still 😂. I haven't read all of your comments, or any of them for that matter, but you nailed it on the weight on the outside ski. Two things for your trouble on the red runs early in the video. First, the skis you rented aren't going to do well in the soft powder. I'm from the Western U.S. and we ride super wide skis in abundant deep pow. Every time I take a pair of carving skis on a day with fresh snow I regret it lol. They sink and trip you up. The second item for your red progression, the aforementioned weight on the outside ski. Putting weight on that inside ski is why you were looping out (overturning in a semi circle and crashing). As a fundamental of skiing, I would recommend doing javelin turns. An absolutely perfect drill for when you're home doing the 3 hrs indoors! Good luck and enjoy!

You are skiing really well for a beginner Alex! Regular practice at the snow dome is a good idea. Getting as many lessons as you can afford is also important to progress your technique, and ensure you don’t pick up bad habits. The better you can make your technique the easier and more enjoyable it is to ski. When it becomes second nature you can fully appreciate all the beauty around you. Off-slope the best thing you can do is get stronger, especially in your legs and core. Squats are a great exercise for skiing. Hiking and biking are also good. If you can combine more strength with better technique you will easily progress to feeling comfortable on red runs. Keep at it!

How cool are you Alex! Amazing what you have achived in a year. Adults often really struggle when learning to ski. My little boy also learned to Ski only be observing other Skiers. You seem to be a natural on skier Alex. Just imagine if you would have been born in Austria. You would be a Worldcup skiers by now. 😊

Alex. This popped up and I started watching and stayed to the end. Excellent video. Great progress on the skiing. I started at 17 years old. I still remember those first few times… without lessons lol. Terrifying at first. I’m 61 now retired and still ski. I visited my home town and skied here the last week. Today the skiing was wicked. Keep at it.

Man, this video helped me a lot, I was thinking that it didn't make sense to go skiing once a year because of the logistics of where I live, and then I would never learn properly, but you motivated me to continue, this year I I wouldn't go to Ushuaia in Argentine Patagonia, and after watching your video I'm already looking at the tickets. thank you very much!

Thanks for the advice to look back on how far one has come from the beginning when they first put on skis in their lives. I too find myself comparing with better skiers which isn't bad, just that we have to take a moment to see our own progression to keep going. I have to say your progression is really good! I also ski once a year and each time I return I forget and regress about 30% (as most people like us do). But it took me so long (2 ski trips) to get to parallel turns and more recently carving. The feeling is amazing. I hope you document when you first execute carves - that happiness is similar to the first time you go down a ski hill.🥰 I also relate so hard to the part where you wonder how it took you so long to attempt this sport. At least you did in your 20s. I have met some people who pick it up in their 50s and realize how much they love it. We got lucky!

Lovely to see another beginner experience. I started putting the serious effort in skiing about 3 years ago. My benefit is a 2 hour drive to a big ski hill. You are way more brave and athletic than me (at 40). If your quads are hurting, it means you are too much in your backseat. I found working on my balance and core when I am not skiing helped me a lot when I was.
