Always warms my heart to see how deep-rooted folk practices are not only from Italy but throughout the culture and its history too and includes other religious themes like from Roman, Etruscan, and Samnites and whatnot. Love these types of videos!!

Fun fact: america may be diverse in many cultures but never forget the original cultures that were colonized. Native americans of south and north americas. We are still alive

I appreciate this comment. I hope to not sound rude or combative, I’m honestly just curious and unsure. Aren’t the indigenous cultures to what is now the United States very different from one another? At least that’s what they told me in school.

Pa told me that the gesture of the horns with the hand also brings bad luck if directed to someone. This is why he said we always should point it at the ground and not towards the person instead.

Speaking of a Cimaruta , I actually have one of these and bought it from Etsy. You can find different styles. I learned about these years ago and love mine and wear it all the time. I never would have received one from anyone, sadly.

I had to buy my own cornetto because i don't have anyone living near me to do it. But I held my grandparents in my mind and made sure they saw me buy it. Best I can do.

The figa is also very popular in Spain! I always carry a tiny one on one of my earrings. It's my favourite charm. We will also do the horn gesture as protection, but while saying "lagarto, lagarto!". Coral stone is also incredibly popular in Andalucía as a charm specially for babies, almost all female babies will get a pair of "corales", first earrings made of that stone.

As you said we have the mano fica in Spain too, though these days the nazar (as people call it here, “ojo turco”) is much more popular. Some weeks ago I went to a local archaeology museum while wearing my mano fica and on the showcase I saw a mano fica that belonged to a Roman-Iberian woman from thousands of years ago.

I found it really interesting that I've always used the melofiga as a comfort symbol for myself... Sometimes i wonder if those are the quiet ways in which our heritage manifests itself, even without context... 👀🧐🤔✨

Well, this explains the pimentinhas (little peppers 🌶️) that I would see when I was in Brazil. Brazil has a huge Italian population from WWII, and it looks like the brought their folk magic with them. 😊

This made me sad af because when I was 18 and really immature as well as didn’t even believe in this sort of shit, my mother gave me my deceased dads Italian horn gold necklace. I lost it pretty quickly after. I would have treasured to have that now that I am starting to practice.

I have both a red cornicello and coral mano figa as well as a third personalized charm as protective charms on my necklace. I primarily worship the roman deities and I got them in honor of them. Both of the amulets also represent my gender fluidity.

This is so interesting coming from an Italian and Irish background. There's a book series called The last Days of magic that talks about the Catholic Church going into villages in Ireland and eradicating magic. My dad was second-generation in America from Italy and I've always wondered if there were magic practices that had been lost along the way. It was always my intention to look into it but I understand now when people talk about having their culture lost and then having it restored. It's really interesting to see those places and those stones that have naturally been drawn to that actually have like historical significance with my heritage so cool, thank you for sharing.

I know it's not about the stones but the mention of Santa Lucia's eyes reminded me of one of the most of Mon threats of Italian mothers (at least around where I lived) which was "Santa Lucia seconda, ti cavo gli occhi e te li do in mano" which was literally threatening children with gauging their eyes and having them hold them in their hands. Not that it happened of course but I mentioned it to my British spouse as you were going through the story and they went "what a normal country you are from" (not) 😅

I bought all my protection charms myslef, accept one ring (altho I choosen which one). Because it was easier and faster hahah - I tend to think they work anyway. Some of them I enchanted to do the work and some of them just have the symbolic that I belive is protective. Also some are devoted to gods :)

You say amulets are more effective when received as a gift. What about the shells you spoke about? We have very similar shells here, would would you consider finding them on the beach a gift from the sea/universe/insert being here? Thanks

as argentinian (a lot of italian ancestry in our culture), the horns with fingers sort of gesture is called "cornudo" and you use it to say somebody has been cheated on (un cornudo, le pusieron los cuernos) its derogatory too. so funny

Love the vid! but I wanted to correct your pronunciation on il cornicello and la cimaruta. In the Italian language words starting with c that follow with the vowels E or I become a "soft" c sound, so like ch in chess. so cornicello would be corni-CHello and Cimaruta would be CHeem-ah-rootah. Great video though, I hope this made sense in terms of the pronunciation and helped!!
