In my opinion wobbles are harder, hookups too..idk man a lighter board is easier to control, to keep the lines..freeriding with the weight surely helps for longer standups but for short predrift I prefere be without, more grip and control..in still a beginner btw

Thanks for the info! I used to freeride and a little racing and haven't bombed a hill in about 9 or 10 years. I got back into it last summer (but broke my wrist mountain biking so didn't get to ride much before winter hit). I've always been into techy downhill and going fast, and I don't mind putting my hands down but I'm nervous to commit to a smol board like this because I don't race and I don't always need to rail the tightest line. I'm riding a 10" board with 10" Calibers and I think I'd like to experiment with a gripper board for hands down riding. You think I'd be better off with something like ~9.25-9.5" board and slightly narrower trucks (I'm thinking Aera K5 in 164mm, maybe Valks because I hear they're leany) or bite the bullet on a smol board? (When I rode a lot more back in 2009-2014 I rode a topmount, 180mm trucks, and 22" wheelbase so I'm not a stranger to short wheelbases. It used to be my only setup too, fast directional freeride and downhill)

Honestly it depends on your budget, I would recommend the 9.25-9.5 wide board with 150-160mm trucks first as that is probably the best all round size for downhill in my opinion. Later on you could get a smaller set up if you are wanting to get into racing or that style of skating.

@ChemTrail Skate thank you! I think that's a good recommendation. I can always go smaller if I end up liking it. At this point I don't really have a budget in mind but I'm willing to spend a good bit for a sweet setup. A couple of boards I'm looking at are something from Happy Board Co, the Rocket Macro, and the Acedia. For trucks maybe some Valkyrie in 45/30 or some Rolling Tree chopped K5s to make them adjustable 155-165 and 46/30. I'm a big Aera fan but maybe I should branch out and try the Valkyries.
