Note: I'm sorry the info boards in the video don't stay up longer. This was one of my first KZbin videos and I honestly made it for ourselves, when we had no subscribers, and didn't think anyone other family would watch. I would change it, but unfortunately KZbin doesn't allow you to re-upload videos.
In August 2019, we travelled from Edinburgh to the Isle of Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. There are no words to describe how much we love these islands and their people. We only had a few days in Lewis & Harris, but hopefully this video will give you a good idea of what to expect. Lewis & Harris are incredibly beautiful and completely unspoilt and we must keep it that way.
Please leave no trace or mark behind, except your love and wonder for a very special & magical place.
This video contains the following places in Harris & Lewis - enjoy!

Being Scott's myself and my wife visited most parts of Scotland not a corner missed, me thinks the negative comments you've had are from people who probably have never visited Scotland and the highlands and islands , probably jealous because there living in overpopulated communities and large cities, I for one with this on my doorstep, I know where i would rather be loch lomond just a few short miles away and stunning views of the clyde in any season never tyerd of it , another place we visit a lot , is England's beautiful north east coast , stunning Northumberland, something always draws us back hear think it's the piece and quiet and beautiful landscape, only a short drive to, lately iv heard Scotland's population is rising in the past year , people for me are seeing that we have something special hear , and want to escape the rat race, sorry for going on David but can't talk my country up enough many thanks. Scotland beautifully created by god himself. 👏😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Neil, thanks for commenting and for being so supportive. I completely share your love for Scotland. We are indeed a very lucky lot to live in such a stunningly beautiful country. I love Northumberland too. It's a spectacular coastline and one I really should try to explore more. Look after yourself and thank you for your kind words which are greatly appreciated. Best wishes, David

I was lucky enough to be stationed at Stornoway, in HM Coastguard from 1984-1987. My job took me all over the Outer Hebrides, in all weathers. Thanks for this video, it brings back so many wonderful memories of people and places,

Hi Charles, thank you ever so much for your lovely comment. How very fortunate you were to be stationed in Stornoway. You must have seen and explored some incredible places around the Isles. I only made this video for family, but hearing that it brings back great memories for other people, makes me so glad to have shared it. I just wish we'd had more time and I could have done a better job. I'm getting a lot of stick for including the information boards, but at the time I was only journaling it for myself. Anyway, thanks again for your lovely words and I really hope you can visit the beautiful islands again soon, once lockdown is over. The loss of tourism to the islands will be very damaging and I hope that my little video might encourage a few people to discover the islands once the crises is over. Thanks again, Best wishes, David

Thanks so much Angus, I deeply appreciate your very kind words. I filmed this just to record our memories, not thinking that anyone else would want to watch it. If I’d known, I’d have spent more time on the editing, but cest la vie! I included the information boards just as an aid memoire for myself and now of course wish I’d left them up for longer. Still, I’m glad other people have enjoyed it and we can always look back on some wonderful times in a very special place. I do hope as things improve that you can go back soon. We hope that next year we can visit again, when hopefully everything is back to normal. Thanks again for all your kindness and support. Best wishes, David 😀

Unfortunately, I only included short clips of the information boards as I only made it for myself and family. One day I hope to re-edit it and make the info boards longer and/or remove them. So glad you enjoyed it and I really hope you can visit Scotland soon. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Hi CalCo, thanks so much for getting in touch. What a coincidence that was your hand in the wall. My wife and I thought the wall was a lovely idea. Hopefully it can bring some extra business to some of the local businesses too. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Old tradition has it that if you put your hand near the butt of Lewis,you could possibly lose a whole arm. Apparently every winter the Scots cover the red light on the lighthouse with a big black bed sheet. The Scots are the best alright.👻🧟‍♂️😱Tick tick tick tick💣

We took my mom to her ancestral home- Isle of Lewis in ‘08. It was beautiful and clean. She was 84 and absolutely loved the adventure. A week after we returned home she didn’t know we had ever seen it. I cried a river of tears for her loss of the memories. Now we cry for missing her. Love your exquisite video. Nancy

I left Lewis over 25 years ago now and have ended up in Sydney but seeing videos like this make me want to move home and reconnect with the island and all my family up there. I hope the current virus situation calms down over the coming months as I have just been made redundant so now would be a good a time as any to make the move.
@DavidWheaterScotland

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear of your redundancy. I really sympathise. It's such a tough time for everyone. I haven't been able to do any tours or photography for over 6 months and I desperately miss it and financially it's been extremely tough, but it's the same for so many in these industries. Fingers crossed the new year brings us all better things. I completely understand your desire to move back home to Lewis. My wife and I often talk of moving there ourselves - maybe one day! Take good care of yourself and I hope everything works out well. I've been lucky enough to spend a bit of time in Sydney and Australia over the years and I really love it, but Scotland will always be very special to me. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

I am a Scot living in Glasgow and have travelled all over the world. I still maintain however that some of the best beaches I have ever seen are in the North West coast of Scotland. Unfortunately they do not have the warm water to go with it. The only downside are the midges. I used to think the ones on Skye were bad, but the ones in Invermoriston are pretty evil too. Good video, and brought back some great memories.
@DavidWheaterScotland
@DavidWheaterScotland 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, you're spot on about the beaches in the north west. I stay in Lairg every year and do the A836/838 loop and then over to Oldshoremore which is just fantastic. Aside from the Hebrides, I think the north west is my favourite part of the mainland and still has a lovely air of being off the beaten track. I've fished around Assynt for over 40 years and there are some spectacular lochs and locations all around the region. Thanks for your kind words and support. Lets hope we can get back up there soon. Best wishes, David

I've been just about every year for 42 years and so wish I could be there. Fingers crossed everything gets better soon and we can all start to visit the places we love. The tourism economy has been so badly hit and I really hope it can bounce back later in the year. Thanks again for your lovely comment and best wishes from a sunny Edinburgh :-)

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Please don't give up hope. I wasn't able to walk for the best part of a year before we went, due to a rare condition and neuropathy in my feet which causes me a great deal of pain when I walk. Filming, photography, nature and the outdoors are my life and I didn't know if I would be able to continue, but time is a great healer. This is what made getting to the islands so special after a long hard slog of recovery. I've learned to live with it and I don't let it stop me. Your health is absolutely your wealth and I'm determined to follow my dreams for as long as I possibly can :-) Warmest best wishes, David

@@DavidWheaterScotland Hello, David. This is an odd coincidence. I have a neuroma in my right foot that I have been putting up with for ten years. It's an affliction, but not debilitating like yours. (They tried a couple fixes for it, but they didn't take.) I am of Scots/Irish descent on my dad's side (my surname is Graham), and I have always wanted to see the homeland, but I can't afford the trip. I will have to make do with your videos. They're beautiful, please keep it up.

I too have travelled widely, lived abroad as well as in Norfolk and Pembrokeshire but settled away from the land of my birth in the gently rolling downs of North-West Hampshire. I have come to know most of our country but I have not been to the further reaches of my native land since my youth. The more I have travelled the more I have come to love the beauty and richness of all of Britain - ignoring the messy bits, of course. "Leave only your footprints" is a sentiment I can agree with which made it slightly distressing to see an Argos and what looks like a Chinese restaurant in the streets of Stornoway. One of my great grand-mothers came from there. I have never been and that's something I have to put right. Beautifully done. Thank you, David.

Luckily for me, my mother lived at Port of Ness from 1989 to 2013,so I've had 45 holidays up there (while she lived there) and 4 more since she moved back to Yorkshire. I never tire of the Isle of Lewis/Harris,indeed,6 days from now we should have been going again,to stay in a wonderful cottage over-looking the harbour at Port of Ness (due to lockdown we're unable to go).The people.....the scenery...the bird-life...unbelievable!!

We were completely spellbound by the place too and as much by Lewis as by Harris. I so wish we could have spent more time there, but we hope to go back soon. Filming the video was quite a struggle, as there just wasn't enough time to do the islands justice, but lots of early starts helped us get round a fair bit. The beaches are just incredible and it just doesn't come across on film how extraordinary they are. Hope you can get back soon after the restrictions are lifted and thanks again for your very kind words. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Great footage, similar to what I captured way back in the 90s! Even the weeds were beautiful to film! My wife and I and our friends (4 of us) hired a cottage for the week! On the west side there are golden beaches, on the east side is like the moon with all the boulders and rocks! I did film editing onto VHS cassettes, but I do have some on disc's. We are in our 70s now, but we are contemplating going back to Harris/Lewis! At luskentyre beach there is an island that you could walk out to - it is called tarensay - If that is how one spells it? There was a programme on TV back in the 90s which was called the castaways - they stated that the island was not reachable! I have footage of a micro-light landing on the island - the film crew were furious! Why I know this is - A guy up the road from me where I live told me all about that adventure! The lighthouse with all the birds nesting was an eye opener as on that day we were there it was so windy! I would love to enter my films I have of our journeys around Scotland that I had taken over the years we travelled onto KZbin - The West highland way, Caledonian canal, Skye and so on, but Technology is to complicated for an auld guy like me! But it is so nice seeing footage of Scotland from guys like you in which in becoming popular with folk outwith Scotland! Haste ye back!

Hi David, just wanted to let you know we moved to Lewis in January from Spain, inspired by your video. Can’t say I’m loving the weather at the moment, rain, rain and more rain. We have seen the mountains covered in ice, snow, sun and mist. The beaches, as you said, take your breath away. The view from our garden is incredible, we have the Harris mountains, and a loch at the end of our garden. The weather is a small price to pay because when the sun does come out its magical. We are 20 minutes from the Callenish Stones which you featured. Sadly some of the eateries have closed down because of COVID but I’m sure things will get better given time. Once again, Thank You 😊

11.03 that little beach at Storr Bay is heaven on earth. We've spent many happy hours there,it's only a few hundred yards from the Butt of Lewis light-house (just before you get there)

Hi Bobby, I couldn't agree more about that beach. It really is absolute heaven. I've been all over the world and, as I say in the video, I really think it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The turquoise blue water is just unbelievable, not to mention all the wild flowers and wildlife. I had such mixed feelings about showing these exquisite places, as I'm afraid that if they become too popular that special feeling may disappear, but I know how extremely important tourism to livelihoods on the island and I suppose a balance has to be found. Best wishes, David

I had so many plans for new films, but hopefully next month I'll be able to travel further afield. Please do get in touch if you come over to Scotland this year. Hi Valerie, I was in SE Georgia, in May 2022, to see White Oak Pastures, which is one of my favorite places on earth; a regenerative farm transformed from an Industrial farm after 20 years. They have 10 pastured species, a great farm shop, and cafe, and grounds, and vacations rentals, and the loveliest staff. I moved to The Isle of Lewis permanently, from Maui, Hawaii, in Oct 2023, alone, with my Assistance Dog, to bring Permaculture and Celtic Mysticism; Regenerative Healing (core and cellular transformation) and Farm Design, to heal the roots of my ancestral home, at age 59.75! Do you know about The Clearances, The Scottish Highlands and Islands Clearances? The trauma is very much still here. Sad. Go to White Oak Pastures, when you can. You will LOVE the people and inspiration there. Love, Aloha, Claire

Lovely work David, your video brought back so many memories of my week-long solo motorcycle trip from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis in April 2012 when I visited almost all of the same places as you. I was inspired by the "Island Parish" TV series, and Peter May's book "The Blackhouse". Along with Lesley Riddoch's account of cycling the same route, they gave me a real feel for the place and the people before I got there. I flew from Barra to Benbecula and back on my first morning (10 mins each way!), what an experience that was. That and finding the Time and Tide bell in the sea at Bosta beach are two of my most vivid memories. Some day I will go back.

Thanks Michael, really glad the video brought back fond memories of your visit. Your trip sounds amazing, and to do it on a motorcycle must have been lots of fun. Thanks again for your kind words. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Hope everyone is doing ok. This video has been such a find, It was just amazing and incredible how much you crammed in over a few days. The video is very professional and very beautiful. It was my dream to travel to the Isles of Harris & Lewis this year, as for many this is on hold. It would love to move there one day, contribute something to the Island, live & work there. I'm currently over the border in the NE England but my heart longs for the Isles. I was sad too hear both you & your wife have both been poorly. Hope you are feeling much better. I've had a look at your website which looks great and a new Subscriber for sure. Best wishes.. Julie

Oh wow Julie - I can't thank you enough for your kindness. It's been a tough time for us as a family, but we're not the only ones and I hope you and your family are safe and well. Visiting Lewis & Harris was so special for us. I always remember my wife on the ferry saying that "she felt safe" which slightly puzzled me at the time, but I think she just meant that she could breathe and relax away from her highly stressful job. I definitely felt it too. I get a lot of criticism for the video, so your kind words mean a great deal to me. It was only meant to be a quick journal of our visit and it wasn't until I got home that I realised I might have enough clips to make a wee film and share with others. I also hope that it might give the islands a boost when visitors can go back. I really hope that one day you can fulfill your dream to live there. I would love to have six months where I can take my time and really discover the spirit and heart of the islands and hopefully do a much better job of catching it on film. Stay safe and thank you so much for your incredibly kind support. Warmest best wishes from a sunny Edinburgh, David :-)

I was lucky enough to visit these islands a couple of years ago and I was totally blown away both by the scenery and the people. The seas are azure blue and the welcome is amazing. Everyone should visit at least once in their lives. Prepare yourselves the weather though, it can be wild and savage at times. One the upside, if you stand on a beach, you can get free Microdermabrasion. ;0

NOTE : I'm sorry the info boards in the video don't stay up longer. This was one of my first KZbin videos and I honestly made it for ourselves, when we had no subscribers, and didn't think anyone other family would watch. I would change it, but unfortunately KZbin doesn't allow you to re-upload videos. Leave only footprints, take only photographs and cherish these beautiful places. We completely fell in love with Lewis & Harris and hope this mini-guide helps you plan your own magical visit. The islands are very precious, so please leave no trace of your visit to ensure these beautiful islands remain unspoilt for generations to come. Please feel free to ask any questions, will be only too glad to help (ps we only had three days to film, so apologies for some of the quality, it was very much shot on the run & if you don't like the music just turn it off :-) )

@@charlieglendo5933 Hi Robinsons, hope your well. I think you're referring to the Callanish Stones which are about 12 miles from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. If you ever get the chance to go I thoroughly recommend it. There's an excellent visitor centre and cafe which you can see on the film. I would say, however, that I enjoyed the other stone circles nearby just as much which had less visitors. Hope you can visit one day and enjoy these incredible islands. Best wishes, David :-)

Very nicely filmed video which brought back wonderful memories. I toured the Outer Hebrides 2007 in a motorhome. The white sandy beaches and crystal clear water look almost tropical like.....until you put your foot in the water which is absolutely freezing!! Favourite beach? Thats a difficult one but Hushinish at the end of the B887 is truly amazing and totally remote.

Hi Bulletguy, thanks for that. I'm really jealous you had a campervan to tour the islands. That would be my ultimate dream. We only had a few days which was a terrible rush and the thought of touring with a van would be bliss. Yes, completely agree with the tropical look of the beaches. They're also a haven for amazing flora and fauna. I found wild orchids growing which were just beautiful and the butterflies were just amazing. Very difficult to choose a favourite beach, they were all pretty specatcular. Thanks for your kind words and support. Warmest best wishes, David

@@DavidWheaterScotland Hi David.....yes it does need time to see everything and even though i had 3 weeks i could easily have used more time but back then i was working and that was my full allocation of leave. I booked an Island Hopscotch route and that also gave me the option of a few days on Tiree on the return leg to Oban. I would go back in a heartbeat but no longer have my camper and had to give up touring due to health issues but i have fond memories of the Hebrides. I found many islanders are pretty religious and i remember being parked up opposite a church in Lewis on a Sunday watching the congregation arrive. A few biker lads turned up in full leathers, each carrying Bibles and i found the religious faiths go from Presbyterian/Free church in the north, to predominantly Roman Catholic in the south on Barra. When on Lewis i remember a sign on the locked gate to a childrens playground which read, "Please respect our Sabbath". It was Sunday hence the reason the gate was locked but i couldn't help but think the children here really do respect it where on mainland UK a sign like that would probably be ripped down! It's another way of life on the Hebrides but i had no problem in sharing the utmost respect for their values.

@@Bulletguy07 I'm really sorry you had to give up the campervan and I hope your health is much better. I remember playing outside on a Sunday while on a family holiday in the highlands and being told off by a neighbour for breaking the sabbath. I was too young to understand at the time and quite upset. I'm not religious, but I do miss the quietness and peace of Sundays when the shops closed and people spent more time with their families. I fish a lot in Assynt and it's not unusual even nowadays for some lochs not to be available on a Sunday, which of course I fully respect. Thanks for commenting and stay safe. Best wishes, David :-)

Thanks Jock, I really appreciate it. The cold doesn't really bother us that much. @@DavidWheaterScotland You are welcome David. I like your saying about there being no bad weather just the wrong clothes. That is a great way to maintain a positive and upbeat outlook on things. I live in a small town called Peachtree City just to the South-West of Metro-Atlanta in the US State of Georgia where the Summers are very hot and the Winters are delightfully mild with little to no snowfall. So I am always a bit on the lookout for extreme cold like I experienced for six years while stationed and living in Germany many years ago as a United States Army Officer. @@DavidWheaterScotland Your part of the UK looks beautiful David. There is so much archeological and living history on display and to be experienced up close and in person - especially compared to US history since the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World anyway. The closest that I have managed to get to your part of the world was a long weekend in London which was nothing like greater England at all. Like you said in your video though, I have been Blessed to travel all over this planet both before, during and after my career in the US Army. I was born - a US citizen - in the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago a once and former British colony so I am reasonably familiar with some aspects of British history which we studied in school at the time. I also really enjoyed reading Enid Blyton books voraciously as a child so I was always on some mystery adventure or holiday smewhere out in the British countryside with great relish and anticipation in my early years! My parents had the good sense to pack us all up and get out of that place when I was still in my mid- teens. The country is an absolute, crime drenched, corrupt and violent disaster since it gained and wasted it's so called 'independence'. But maybe some day, by God's Grace I shall make it to your enticing and 'mysteriuos' - for me anyway - wonderf and delightful Scotland. Thank you again David.
