One thing I disagree on that you mentioned was about the manual trucks, learning how to drive a standard transmission is important, it’s safer, you have more control of your vehicle, the school I’m going to won’t let anyone pull a trailer until they are shifting properly. Canada has changed the laws so that if you do your road test with an automatic transmission you are restricted to only driving automatic. There are still plenty of standard transmission trucks on the road so you WILL be losing out on job opportunities… and to be honest it’s really not that hard to drive standard… you’re getting skilled trainers to teach you so go for it! There’s no reason for anyone to make a big deal out of having to learn on a standard transmission. If you’re paying these high prices for your license, get your money’s worth and learn everything you can, do NOT be restricted to only automatic.

I have wanted to be a truck driver my whole life. I was a carpenter at about 20 when I talked with a cement truck driver who had a class 3A license and I could believe he got paid to drive. I finally got into the industry and it is my favorite thing in the world. I operate Hydro'Vac truck and I love it.

9:15 if you plan on doing flatbed, tanker, oil field, heavy haul, and oversized trucking work when you 1st get your CDL, it is NOT advised that you avoid schools that offer to train students to use a manual transmission. I Dunno how it works in Canada, but in the U.S. if you pass your CDL road test with an automatic you will have a restriction on your license thus legally you can't drive a manual. Where as if you pass your test with a manual you can legally drive stick + auto. Driving a manual will open more doors for you within the industry as some small or medium size company's want you to know how to drive stick or only have stick shift trucks for company drivers. A good school will take their time with students teaching them how to shift correctly and possibly have an in-class simulator training you on how to shift b4 you go out on the road. Also if you go to the "free" mega carrier schools they will only train you on an automatic. A professional driver will adapt to drive both transmissions. Yes, auto's are more present in newer truck's. And for most new drivers who plan on doing van/reefer for the rest of their career there is less of a need to drive manual. But don't think that new manual trucks will COMPLETLY stop being in production because some small carriers + owner ops still buy them. As a new driver you want to leave possibilities open for your trucking future and being taught at a school the right way how to drive a manual (and getting endorsements) is the way to do it.
@690_52 жыл бұрын
It's the same way in Canada. If you spent anything more than 10 hours with Autos in training, your Manual ticket would be invalid, I guess.

I became a trucker in the 70s... back when you could get away with "outlaw" activity that would enable you to actually earn a living. I was in the industry for 40 years. Even with all of the freedoms that I had during my career, I would give anything to go back and choose a different career path! I can't even begin to fathom the mindset that would lead someone to want to become a trucker in the modern era. If I could give each of you prospective truckers a single piece of advice it would be this...DON'T DO IT! And this coming from a man that had a pretty damn successful career.

I'm 19, recently licensed and just got a job. I'm not in long haul but I still work 14 hour days for effectively no pay. I adore trucks, I love the feel of pulling 63.5 Tonnes. Trucking is both the best and worst thing that's happened to me. The only thing that keeps me going is the waves from my fellow truckers as well as the end of the day when I get to go to bed.

I'm sure that some schools are charging an arm and a leg to get your CDL. I got my CDL December 2021 and I didn't have to takeout a second mortgage on my house. I paid $3,800 US Dollars for a Class A course through an accredited community college. I was certified in a manual transmission truck which allows me to drive an automatic or a manual shift transmission. Was it a little more involved having to up shift and down shift...yes, but it's doable. If you have some experience with a manual transmission truck or car, I would recommend testing with a manual transmission semi truck. it certifies you to drive both automatic or manual transmission trucks. the instructors at the college went out of their way to help each student, out of four students, only one failed. classes are purposely kept small to focus on the students. They want as many to pass as possible, but just like not everyone is destined to be a Doctor or an Engineer, some people are not cut out to drive large trucks! it is what it is...

It cost me little more than $6000. For local positions I recommend remove all restrictions from your DL. Recommend to go to school instead of sigh contract with company, because this is chain on your hands, no freedom. For local, you can get license for straight truck or bus. After pandemic bus driver get more by hour. First year was taught, I did everything what they wanted. After one year switch to other company from semi truck to straight with raise more than $4.

Based on my research, ive seen that the companies do take on foreign drivers with international licenses, but its not clear to me whether its normal practice for them to cover the licensing and training fees. I am trying to research fees and procedures as I have no idea where to start or who to ask for advice.
