@@n0w3lly90 yes indeed.Everyone has his role in this musicianship.It's a granded fact that Pal apart from his great contribution as a lyricist is also a skillful music composer.Songs like "Scoundrel days"(co-written by Mags)/"the Blue sky" and "The swing of things" are personally for me 3 of his greatest creations both musically and even more lyrically.Pal wrote the majority of their material that clicked with Mortens voice and Magnes' talent.Have watched them live repeatedly.Mags is the most talkative and amusing on stage while M+P don't talk that much cause of being more concetrated on the performance.

They use a lot of strings in their music too and will often have a symphony when they’re recording and playing live for certain songs. I am 49 (I’m using my son’s YT account btw) so I was alive and kicking in 1988. I discovered A-ha in ‘86. We didn’t have MTV and while I did listen to the radio in ‘85 when Take on Me came out but I didn’t hear it much. In October of ‘86 my grandmother died 2 days after I turned 14 and 10 days after she turned 78. I had a really, really messed up childhood and she was my one solid person in my life that was kind and loving and accepted me even though I wasn’t blood. Her death hit me incredibly hard. While my parents were away making plans for her memorial service I stayed with a school friend for a few days. She had MTV and the music awards were on. The video of Take on Me won multiple awards that year so they were playing snippets of it each time they called a nomination and again if the award went to that video. I saw Morten for the first time and fell head over heals in love with him and that song. My friend and I walked to a shopping center about a mile from her house and I bought the cassette tape of Hunting High and Low. I listened to it constantly to the point where I actually wore it out and you could hear songs from the other side seeping through lol. I never did that with any other cassette tape before then or after. I went and bought every teen magazine with them in it and went through all the other ones I’d bought for Michael J Fox or Kirk Cameron pics and pulled out all of the A-ha stuff and plastered my walls with their pictures. I’ve always been gifted musically and that year for Christmas I begged my mom for a synthesizer and a digital drum kit to go with it. She had come into some money when my grandma died so she bought it for me.I played along with every song on that album and then on my acoustic guitar. I have a newer keyboard now and still play along with over lapping head phones. Ear buds for my phone with their music playing and a headset on top that’s plugged into the keyboard. Their music was a gift and a much needed distraction and outlet for a troubled and lonely teen. They’ve gone on to make a ton of amazing music and are coming out with another album in a few months titled True North. They play sold out shows all over South America and in Norway all the time and sound just as amazing live. They have two shows coming up in the US that are both sold out. Time has not taken anything away from their music and it’s only grown better if that’s even possible considering how good their earlier stuff is. Their MTV Unplugged album they did in 2016 is also phenomenal. Cast in Steel came out around then and is worth checking out along with all of their other music on iTunes or whichever platform you use. This trio had, has and will always have a special place in my heart ❤️

One of my favourite songs from A-ha. Growing up in the northern part of Norway it had a kind of meaning to me - my interpretation on that time was sort of “Keep going, the cold winter will end, spring will come with joy, love and happiness”. To be continued...
@ahkkariq74063 жыл бұрын
One day a few weeks ago I started listening to the lyrics, and it struck me that the song is about abortion. “The cold has a voice It talks to me Stillborn by choice…” The cold (in my opinion) is the partner of the main character of the story/the narrator's voice. “He” sings partly to his partner, the mother of an unborn child, who in cold blood has decided to end the pregnancy against his will. He sings partly to the child's mother "Oh baby don't 'Cause I've been told" (like in “at least you shouldn't have told me”). He also sings to his unborn child: “We shall meet, I know Stay on my love You feel so weak, be strong” (we will meet in another lifetime/in heaven/…), and he sings to himself “Stay on these roads” - keep going. Even as an old man, he will feel the cold sometime in the future. “Where joy should reign” there is nothing but cold and sorrow of an unborn life. He ends up leaving her: "Winter's gone, I'm on my own" By killing the child she also kills the love in the relationship. The video shows how his friends helps him through the pain by being there by his side, "on the road" of life. The mood in the video is consistent with such a course of events. It is quite possible that the lyrics were originally about something completely different, but now I can’t add any other content to the lyrics, and I love the song even more than ever before. In my world we should guard the unborn children and welcome them into our lives, and I feel strongly for all the men that have nothing to say if their partner decides to end the pregnancy.

A-ha writes their own songs and are capable of playing around 15 instruments among themselves, where as today, most artists don't write their own songs. Many of the songs that are on the hitlists today, has up to 14 - 15 songwriters on them, none of wich are the artist. A-ha felt they had something to prove I guess.

This is my favourite song. The very first time I heard it was not on vinyl or cassette but live !!! It just hit me hard and when Mortens voice came in I was in tears !!!! It was at the Edinburgh Playhouse Scotland. They were only a couple of weeks from releasing the album and I habit managed to get a copy of the single which I knew was out but hadn’t heard it unfortunately…. Still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. The piano and voice version that they’ve done on some of the more recent tours and then the unplugged version just made me love it more ….. Mortens voice is phenomenal and he’s such a nice guy. I’ve met him Pål & Magne a few times Over the years and they are so nice to talk to and will happily sign stuff, take selfie etc …. His autobiography is a cracking read too with a lot of behind the scenes stuff too. The only downfall is that it’s only available in Norwegian and German as far as I’m aware. I know a few people bought the German version on Kindle and then used the Kindles translation facility to get it to English. I’m not sure how accurate it is as I read it in Norwegian and could also read the German version too. Anyway we get away from the awesomeness that is this song !! 🎶🎷🐾🎵🎼🐾🎵🎶🎶🎷🎷🎷🐾🐾🐾🐾👌👌🔥🔥🤘🏴🏴🏴🏴❤️❤️❤️❤️👅👅👅👅🥃🥃🥃🥃🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK

Dereck, I know you did this 2 yrs ago, but i just found it, and you made me get goosbumps, and cry, here, with your heartfelt reaction!! Everything was absolutely true, and real, and very perceptive, about their absolutely beautiful music, and the 80's in general. The 70's and especially the 80's were the best, the epitome of music, and it's been downhill, so far, from there. Back then, singers REALLY SANG, and today, not many can really sing at all, and use gimmick, gizmos, AI, electronic and computer enhancement, etc, etc.,!!! aka rolled into "autotune". It's a travesty, that almost no one really sings any more!! today's electronic vocal gimmicry should be outlawed!! Back then, singing, et al, was a true and real artform, and singers were lauded for their incredible, amazing real TALENT!!! Dereck, I don't know if you have done this since, but could you consider removing the repetitive DR insignia, appearing and disappearing over the video image, it's getting in the way of seeing the video. Your insignia, in the room behind you, is perfect, without overlaying the video. I couldn't see the video, whenever it appeared, Thank you!!! Amazing stuff!! As someone who grew up through that period - I noticed during 1989 something dramatically changed with music in general - and something was lost and it has never been the same since - There have been one or two songs or bands that stood out (Like Keane) - but for me it just went down hill dramatically in 1989. I tend to listen to things from 1978-1988 period mostly because there was so much amazing music created then

I dont know how familiar you are with A-ha but A-ha has released several great albums (and songs) also after 1989 though. Besides their albums «Hunting high and low» (1985), «Scoundral days» (1986), «Stay on these roads» (1988)…..»East of the sun, west of the moon» (1990), Memorial beach (1993), Minor earth, major sky (2000), Lifelines (2002), Analogue (2005), Foot of the mountain (2009), Cast in steel (2015) and there is a new album called «True North» (along with a movie) coming out in 2022. They have always kept their sound through the years. Some of the songs I love from each album (1985 to 2015) if you want to listen (if you havent heard a lot of A-ha before): Album: Hunting high and low (1985): «Living a boy’s adventure tale» kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4vNoHiljt-tgrM «Train of thought» kzbin.info/www/bejne/bafHgJqFl7apsJo Album: Scoundrel days (1986) «I’ve been losing you» kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpPKZX18mciVj5Y «Manhattan skyline» kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYqVo2VugpaHqLs Album: Stay on these roads (1988) «The blood that moves the body» kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXS0e5esgdF6epo «There is never a forever thing» kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5XFi3eho5qihMU «The living daylights» (live from «Rock in Rio») kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnS4o5yLqdVoi7s This was written by A-ha as the James Bond theme song in the movie «The living daylights» in 1987. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epepk5x8pKaKoK8 Album: East of the sun, west of the moon (1990) «Early morning» kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6nJe354f6Zrb6M «I call your name» kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpzWhGOimclgeLc Album: Memorial beach (1993) «Datk is the night» kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWK9mHiIadqZaaM «Move to memphis» kzbin.info/www/bejne/npOpY6atltuaiaM «Angel in the snow»kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqWTnYOro7alitE The official song of the Paralympics in 1994: «Shape that goes together» kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4ebpKJ7l694Zsk Album: Minor earth, mayor sky (2000) «Minor earth, mayor sky» kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6jRmaKkqdRgbtU «Velvet» kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGLHhYqjpNiVjqM Album: Lifelines (2002) «Lifelines» kzbin.info/www/bejne/enTOk5mvoJuLfcU «Forever not yours» kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6LHd4eGrrxogpI Album: Analogue (2005) «Analogue» and «Cosy prisons» (performed live in Norway) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jprOpaWgaKaYkMk Birthright» kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5Srlo2ag8iiaNU (no video of this strangely) Album: Foot of the mountain (2009) This was supposed to be their last album before they splitted for good. «Foot of the mountain» kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2SZhHV-gdKMjsU «The shadowside»kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5bMmIJ5hbyffMk «The bandstand» kzbin.info/www/bejne/oafcZZtjeb15kJI «Riding the crest» kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJO8nmOghd-EeKM «Butterfly, The last hurrah». kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4vNiaypitygg5Y This wasnt on this album, but it was the last song they made before they split in Dec 2010, and the video is quite emotional (especially for the fans). The video was directed by the same guy (Steve Barron) who started it all with their song «Take on me» which won 6 MTV music awards in 1986 (including best music video).. He also directed several of A-has other music videos. In Dec 2014 it was announced that A-ha was invited to perform in «Rock in Rio» 2015 and told they had committed to working together for a couple of years, so they reunited. There were 90.000 in the audience that night, even though it was heavy rain and awful conditions. Magne later told «My keyboard was swimming in water, and I was the only one [of us three] who was plugged directly into the electric system. The whole thing could have exploded, there was a lot of water in there. But it was a fantastic audience!” Album: Cast in steel (2015) «Under the makeup» kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafbiGl5mqh_gZY «Cast in steel» kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJvKfqKqZ6h3l7c «The wake»kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIavmI2ImsqChMk «Objects in the mirror»kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn7JZZ-eZpyXq68 They have also released some «compilation/best of albums» and many more great songs not on the albums too. Morten Harket has also relased solo albums/songs (6 albums) Enjoy! You wont regret listening to them 😊 They are one of the most successful bands in the nordic countries and they are the sound of the greatest music era the 80’s (and Morten Harket started the leather armwrist band trend, teared jeans and leather look). What you may not know is that Kanye West, U2, Radiohead, Leonard Cohen, The Killers, Noel and Liam Gallagher, Pitbull and Coldplay are among the ones admitting to be A-ha fans and some bands have also told that A-ha was an inspiration for their music (Coldplay, Keane, The Killers..as you can hear by their sound). U2 stated that "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." heavily influenced the composition of their 2000 single release, "Beautiful Day". (and the «touch me» in «Beautiful day» is identical to «touch me» in «The sun always shines on tv» as you can hear). He sounds just as good today at 61 (this is 4 years ago, full concert in their home town, Oslo Norway) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqjCiKuaha5jgLM

You have to check Out Of Blue Comes Green from the same album. It is an absolute masterpiece.

I agree ! Out of Blue Comes Green is a must from this album. This was supposed to be a single release off this album too but the company went for another song ("Touchy!") instead which is a big shame as "Out of blue..." is a much better song. There was even a radio/single mix recorded for it back then (unreleased) but eventually it appeared as a bonus track on a remastered edition of "Stay on these roads" album not so long ago.

Hi Dereck. I recommend their song "Out of blue comes green" from the same (SOTR) album. This was supposed to be a single release off this album too but the company went for another song ("Touchy!") instead which is a big shame as "Out of blue..." is a much better song. There was even a radio version recorded for it back then (unreleased) but eventually it appeared as a bonus track on a remastered edition of "Stay on these roads" album not so long ago.

after this album they dumped the synths for more organic sound. East of the sun west of the moon album is a favourite.
