I think your roots with the NEC is a reason this song and others come off so well. I've narrowed it down to this impression I get; in all your songs, each of you gets a kick out of every single note - having fun the whole way thru. Very upbeat... I'm not going to read all 1032 comments to check on this, but I did read down a fair bit. I'm surprised that supposed lifetime brass players haven't commented that his (what I think I hear as) triple tongueing is freaking amazing. I remember after 4 years of lessons trying to imitate Al Hirt's tongueing and never even got close. That takes an amazing amount of practice and ability and should be recognized for what it is - total mastery of the instrument. Anything you hear that might sound off one way or the other is, I'm very convinced, intentional. For myself, I hear mariachi - intentional and clear. Also, I'm sorry that so many people want to rain on this band's parade. This is the first time I've ever heard or seen them and it's obvious to me they are totally enthusiastic about what they do and just simply enjoy themselves. I know what that's like - I did sound for a reggae band (8-10 members at times) and we did it not for any kind of money but because we loved it. You just can't buy that.

I was entertained by the whole arrangement- they were having fun and it becomes contagious.

The synth solo in the bridge should really have been handed over to the keys. The trumpet playing is skillful, but its loud strident tone fails to convey the light-hearted sense of magic in the original track. To me, this band not only killed it on this cover, they reinvented the whole song while honoring every lyric. Maybe the original video (one of the most memorable and watchable videos of the roaring '80's imho) was so "high concept" that the true meaning of this love song was lost on me: but LSD has made this one of the most poignant love songs I have ever heard in my 58 years on this planet. Her expressions/singing are captivating and her announcing "I'll be coming for your love o k" just knocks me over. Then to create the exact opposite type of video from the hi tech original, this being basically a garage band setting, and craft these beautiful harmonies and unusual instruments into an epic cover and then smash it out of the ballpark is remarkable. A raucous trumpet solo to an A-Ha song ? I hope I can catch them live, I see they are coming nearby this summer. And yeah, the singer is a babe.......

You have different requirements for music, I understand. For this reminds me of when we were 12 years old and were going to start up with bands. Recordings say it sounded cruel. This band plays so amateurishly that it cuts to the ears. Especially the trumpeter. He sounds like he got his instrument a few weeks ago. He plays staccato where there should be mykw tones, he turns the tones when he gets tired in the lip. And he should learn to play before posting a video.
@Scott_works3 жыл бұрын
@@runerebnordantonsen3202 There is a certain "garage band" thing that is going on in this particular recording. If you look into their music, they are all well schooled, and one of the things that makes them so original sounding is their home grown approach, in my opinion. Rachel has been singing since she was young, and was a powerhouse when she was still a child. Her voice carries the band, and the rest of them are a part of it. They've been together some time now. After seeing them on Steven Colbert's show the other night, it seems to be working. They have some great new songs that are well produced and they are becoming pretty popular. Rachel's deep, melodic, wide ranging voice, reminiscent of the Memphis, New Orleans and Austin bar scenes is perfectly fit into this pop-esque and even campy at times juxtaposition that makes for an interesting mix. Yes, the trumpet was a little over the top on that song, but It didn't hurt that bad... :)
@runerebnordantonsen32023 жыл бұрын
@@Scott_works, Of course, you should support them when you enjoy listening to them. The vocalist is probably the best of them, but will probably never compete with voices such as Shania Twain, Madonna or others in the pop category. Compared to the band a-ha, they were at the top of lists around the world with this song, and unfortunately they are not a millimeter close to lifting the song as the original version is. I can imagine that they can be successful at local parties, Christmas parties and other events where the audience does not make such great demands other than that there is music there. And if you are also familiar with them, I understand that you want to defend them. But in this case, they destroy a big hit completely

Interpretation type of horror. I have played the trumpet for 25 years, and had students in training for 15 years. If the trumpeter here has paid an instructor to learn an instrument, I would recommend that he demand the money back. He "turns" tones. Blows at full strength probably to cover incompetence. He tries some skills where he misses most of the notes. No self-respecting musician will humble himself as it does here. 😁

Back in the day (1973) those pants were perfect for the in style high school teenager. And the top is also perfect (although mine was made of angora knit) Moms would never have such wide bottoms or the little gap between top and pants.

High waist, tight, flared legs. I stared at too many of those back in the day. Definitely not mom jeans. Those would be those ugly Capri pants.

There are a lot of people in this comment section who don't know who Lake Street Dive are. The trumpet player often plays in this style in some of their cover songs (see: This Magic Moment). The band doesn't take themselves seriously and often do silly cover songs (see: Bohemian Rhapsody or Love Shack, just to name two). Also he primarily plays guitar and not trumpet, but he can play the trumpet well (see: Mistakes).
@exitmusic_27557 жыл бұрын
For real. This was probably thrown together in a few hours with next to no rehearsal time and people are bitching about the trumpet player. They are legit one of the best live performances I've ever seen (twice) and ya'll are gonna judge them on some dinky A.V. Club shoot that no one cares about.
@gavinward17587 жыл бұрын
I think McDuck's first instrument is the trumpet. Pretty sure I remember an interview where Rachel Price says when he first started playing the guitar (because the band needed some guitar) he sucked and now he doesn't suck at all, or words to that effect. He does impressive turns on both.
@jspihlman7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do recall hearing somewhere that he only became a guitarist because they needed someone.
@FantasticGuitarChannel7 жыл бұрын
There are old videos of them with Rachel on guitar. The trumpet playing is different but there's something to it.
@johnmcaraher7 жыл бұрын
She does play guitar on a few things (e.g. Be Cool) but the parts are generally very simple. Which is fine - she brings that voice! But her guitar playing has never been a major instrumental focal point.

@PaulH77917 жыл бұрын
yes....some missing the point of this...
@willb36986 жыл бұрын
Darkfaith 66 - No, Not missing the point - It's out of tune..and quite badly - my ears don't really cope well with that. I'm not a snob and love to hear live - but part of being a musician is to be in tune. People can't hear it here? If this was being played on fretless instruments like violins, cellos etc - it would be really pretty bad. If you look at a lot of the comments- it seems to be about how pretty the girls are.
@macmac82494 жыл бұрын

The drummers singing just gave the song that so called "humpf" Also i really dont get all the comments about the trumpeteer, he's playing perfectly in the style of the song, plus playing quietly at the end is very difficult on those high notes, cheers to him

It's the harsh blaring tone of the trumpet that's problematic. It fails to convey the lighthearted magic of the original track.
