DENJIRO: Camping is very popular these days. Today, I’ll show you an old-fashioned hand drill for starting a fire. We’ll be using this piece of Japanese cedar tree and horseweed stem. This here is horseweed. It’s often growing in open areas of land and is easy to obtain. First, I’ve made a hole in the board where the stick will go. I’ve added a notch to the hole as well. This is important. You may think you’re supposed to drill a hole in the middle of the board and scrape the stick against it, but that’s a mistake. Place the stick inside the hole and vigorously spin the stick.
Friction causes the temperature to rise, and wood shavings accumulate in the notch. The temperature has risen even further, and now the wood shavings are turning black. By accumulating wood shavings that have turned black, the temperature rises, fire starts from the inside, and smoke starts to rise. Let’s try blowing on this.
GIRL: There’s fire!
DENJIRO: You can see that fire is burning. Now, we can take something that catches fire easily, like shredded plant fiber, place the burning wood shavings on top, and blow on it. We’ve started a fire with a hand drill. With a hand drill, it’s actually pretty hard to firmly press the stick against the board while rotating it. So here’s an idea. This piece of rope right here. I’ve added a notch to the tip of the horseweed stick. Let me put the rope in this notch. Now, I’ve put my thumbs through the loops at the end of the rope.
I’m now able to firmly press the stick down thanks to the rope. It’s much easier than using just your hands.
