A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall was written by Bob Dylan in 1962 and it appeared in his album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in 1963. It was covered by singer/songwriter Edie Brickell @ New Bohemians and appeared on the sound track for the movie Born on the Fourth of July starring Tom Cruise. I was asked about this from my friend MIke who served in the MIddle East,....and I posted as tribute to our brave veterans and service personnel and their families who have served in the Middle East as we celebrate the 4th of July
A Hard Rain's a-Gonna' Fall
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's gonna fall
And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's gonna fall
Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded with hatred
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's gonna fall
Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's gonna fall

Oh my friend...this is so beautiful....Bob Dylan is always on time and Edie's cover, is really wonderful...and, above all, it's the 4th of July...for you and all the Veterans, it means a lot...!!! Believe me I know it very well...just like the October 28th 1940, meant for my late father...he was always crying, during that day....

I just listened to the song from the perspective of the blue eyed son, and God was asking the questions, "Where have you been..." I've heard this song for decades now, but that new perspective allowed me to hear it as for the first time. Brand new. A perfect Gift.

Stumbled across Paul Simon's music because my dear wife wants to sing a duet together of the Boxer. Then we recalled he is married to this gem. She is so unique, what a sound to her voice. There is that trademarked fade into notes, some call it a scoop, but her's is typically a beautiful fade as she finishes.

This is so beautiful and so poignant that it would be next to impossible to find the right words to describe how amazing it is. It really took me back in a lot of ways but especially with the photo you used on the line, "I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests" as that is a photo of a hasty observation post emplaced by my unit of the 173d Airborne Brigade overlooking the Tsunel Valley in Kunar Province, Afghanistan in late 2007. It is truly a small world, Brother. I also absolutely love that you kept the photo of Sharbat Gula, the famous Afghan girl with those penetrating eyes that could tell a whole story without her ever saying a word. I have that photo on my refrigerator. It continues to remind me that there are things in this world worth fighting for and nowhere else is that more prevalent than in the faces of those that cannot fight for themselves. I cannot in a million years thank you enough for putting this masterpiece together. I owe you a debt of gratitude that I can never repay. Thank you so much for this and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Independence Day!

Maybe instead of some broad way you were meant to travel on the narrow path. There are no coincidences. They do not exist. There is only a word with a lie for a definition. A definition that is the exact opposite of THE TRUTH. Deception, darkness, deceit, all done by design. A note to cowards: You had better man-up, so to speak, for real. The Armour of YHVH, THE CREATOR does not provide any protection for your back. So if you shrink down in fear in the face of your enemies, tremble, turn, tuck tail and run, you will have exposed yourself to being attacked from behind in a very vulnerable and defenceless position. THE ALMIGHTY expects that HIS warriors stand up and face down, and fight the enemies of humanity and indeed creation itself, and to annihilate those whom seek to destroy THE ONE whom sits on high above the circle of the earth, circle- not globe. BELIEVE in HIS WORD and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, be confident in THE TRUTH which has been written since the beginning, know beyond any doubt that HIS WORDS WILL NEVER CHANGE, HE keeps HIS WORD. Because HE IS THE WORD. I pray that my words resonate with you and that the little seed of truth that l am planting will sprout and flourish with the merciful Latter Rain that I ask HE send to you and also others that read this. Pray. And exit confusion/Babylon.

This is what you call the slaughtering of a masterpiece. You don't take deep and powerful lyrics like these and then run them through with an insincere voice dripping with mockery and cuteness. Not cool.

Calm down Mickey. Hardly insincere is it? It is cool. No, it’s not Dylan but it’s damn good.

Michael, I think you got it wrong on this one. There is absolutely nothing insincere about anything Edie does. I happen to really like this version.

How old are you Mike? So very curious if this is an ignorant statement from a boomer attached to Dylan, or someone younger who needs to get a grip on reality and educate themselves. Dylan's will always be legendary, however this version is more perfect to illustrate the impact of emotions of Born on the 4th of July and fits the scene exactly how it should. An amazing film. Sadly, this video glorifies what the song is rallying against, but that is predictable... the video for this song that is connected to the movie is light years better thsn this one btw And You sound sexist as hell too, with your choice of words ("cutesy" you kidding me?!hah) but whatevs, big surprise😆 P.s. my daughter is named Dylan so I friggin love the guy

Ftr I also doubt Paul Simon would choose a saccharine twit for his life partner and mother of his kids, she's awesome, Mike ;)
