I really liked your idea of sharing a rejected application instead of an accepted one. Certainly, a rejected one teaches far better than a successful one. Really helpful!

My sense is that highly selective schools (like Harvard) are looking for students who will contribute to their college, while limiting how many of any specific category of student they admit. For instance, they only want so many pre-meds. My impression also is that they see through the "I cured cancer by the time I was 17" applicant story. In addition to being a great student academically, this student sounds highly motivated. But, all the Harvard admits, I'm assume, are also great students academically and highly motivated. If Harvard only will admit so many pre-meds, then the applicant has to stand out amongst the other pre-med applicants for how they will contribute to the university once they are there. I'm guessing the other applicants to Harvard that cycle offered a more compelling story in that regard.

It would be fascinating to hear Harvard’s rationale.

Superb. I was wondering with ai and chat gtp.....do uni have software to detect use of such? Or is there percentage threshold like with uni moodle submission where cheating is believed to take place? Say 60% chance use of AI....

18 trips to Thailand equals rich kid. Now that could be good if the school views that kid as a "developmental" admit (i.e., groom for future donations), but Harvard has plenty of those. More important, what this example does is raise the question "is it really worth it to knock yourself out in high school, often to emotional and social detriment, just to shoot for schools where admission is still unlikely?" My answer is a decided NO (although this example seems to be the rare self-motivated student who also has gifts). And with this example, this student will likely end up in the same place having attended Northeastern as he would have if he had attended Harvard. It's all a racket.

Hi. Dyou think being undecided for the future plans section of the common app makes your application look bad?? Like you know what major/minor youre interested in just not decided on career options?
@Collegeessayguy3 ай бұрын
Nope, it doesn't make you look bad.

The student's activities are indeed impressive, but "Founding a Non-profit" is quickly becoming a college admission cliche. Meanwhile, "Foreign Service Trips" to another country is one of the oldest cliches and one that admission officers universally dislike due to the obvious privilege. I mean, 18 trips?? Who the hell can afford that many plane tickets? If the student were of Thai descent, it would feel more justified. Still, the question always remains: "Why didn't you put that same effort into helping people in your LOCAL community instead?" I'm sure this student did great things with their NPO, but I'm not surprised Harvard rejected them. It was also a mistake, IMO, not to include any notable details for NPO in the activity section. Sure, use the Addl Info section, but you essentially just wasted the most important spot in your EC section by sharing 0 useful information
