Couples therapy isn’t always beneficial especially when dealing with narcissists who know how to portray themselves in a charming manner and control the narrative in their favor. It can leave the other party feeling steamrolled and further invalidated, or even put them in a danger once they’re back home. Not saying it isn’t helpful, but of course every situation is different with their own considerations.

Most people have no idea how to be married. If they didn't have parents who modeled effective styles of communication and relationship skills, they will likely lack the requisite skills to resolve marital conflict which inevitably arise in all marriages. The "open-mindedness" concept may be applicable if both spouses want to make a genuine effort to learn how to be married. Tragically, many people never get to this point.
