A HGV Lesson From The Drivers Point Of View!

Well, my instructor let me put on a body cam for this lesson. It is a completely pure lesson, nothing has been changed for the camera. I thought this would be a useful insight for anyone that is thinking of starting or is about to start their HGV lessons.
I got told off a bit, i actually get told to stop at around the 31 minute mark lol! All the usual errors of a brand new HGV driver.
I perform the various maneuvers that are required to perform on the HGV practical test.
There is still plenty more to come from me! A point of view (Headcam) of the reversing maneuver is next up.

Watching this brings back memories, i passed mine in Army in 2008 and then my class 1 in 2008 straight after. It's a different ball game in these things. I have driven wagon and drag and tankers in central London where allowed and if you can drive there in a HGV1, you can drive anywhere. Best of luck to you mate. Welcome to the club.

Nice one pal. It becomes second nature after a while. The swing on the tail will always be a judgement call. If you end up with a job and get to drive your own wagon everyday then it really does become second nature just like driving your own car. Well done though mate.

I passed my test just two weeks ago, what will help any new driver get over there nerves is to interact with is instructor become friends and it will make you feel like you been driving them for along time, well done m8 good video

I was taught not to shuffle the wheel, just no palming with one hand. You can't steer quick enough shuffling in tight situations as I'm sure you've discovered since this video Gaz 😊 Just passed my Class 1 today with only two minors 🙂

Im currently training as class 2 and noticed its so difficult trying to shufle when going around difficult corners/roundabouts, helped me a lot just crossing hands when needed

Thanks Deady these videos are most helpful currently on my 2nd day into class 2 training, 18t wagon carrying IBCs with 2.5t of water. So far only slightly brushed a kerb but reversed into bay 1st time. As others say it's all mirrors and blind spot. Thanks again and fingers crossed I pass 🤞

When at traffic light and when you put your handbrake on, do we need to put the gear on neutral or can we just leave it on D?

Looks like the 4 over 4 gearbox with switch - when I first used one I didn't have a scooby doo how to use it, because I learned on a MAN small cab 13 tonner that had this slap left or right for low or high range, which I can't remember how to use now, 10 years later. I passed my class 1 recently ant it's automatics for me!

95% of trucks are Auto, you may well get asked to drive a manual from time to time. Even something as simple as a slap stick box is a head feck if you've never driven one haha

The training is simple enough, it's a long process though. Over 7 months i think. Once you've passed its just a case of knocking on a lot of doors until someone lets you in haha!
