The concept of Project 59 is "The Low TIM Amplifier", also popularly known as "The Leach Amplifier", was designed by W. Marshall Leach Jr. He published an earlier article in the Audio Magazine February 1976 issue entitled, "Build a Low TIM Amplifier". The Low TIM Amplifier design went through four phases of revisions, the last one entitled "Low TIM 4" was published in May 1986.
The original "Leach Amp" design has a power rating from 100 to 120 watts when connected to an 8Ω load, depending on the power supply from ±52VDC to ±59VDC rails. However, by increasing the power supply rails to ±64VDC, the prototype of Project 59 was able to achieve a power output of 209.10 watts into 8Ω load or 418.20 watts at 4Ω load.
The QA400/QA190 audio analyzer test results of the prototype: THD 0.00835%, THD+N 0.00876% and SNR 92.4dB. That's one of the best!
Four pairs of NJW3281/NJW1302 power transistors were chosen for the power output stage to increase its power dissipation capability. The pre-driver as well as the driver transistors were also replaced with higher rated devices.
