Just finding this video now, on the way from Thebes to Delphi, there is a town called Chaeronea which holds the lion of Chaeronea monument, this lion is dedicated to the destruction of the sacred band (150 couples aka 300 elite Theban soldiers) and has their skeletons buried underneath, the site is a must see in that region and is even more important than Leuctra since it was the main event that started Macedonian hegemony and then Alexanders conquests.

As a modern day Theban I would like to point out that the seven gates can be found in Google maps. Just don't expect anything but ruins. You can also see the place were the great hero Heracles was supposedly born. Plus at a stone's throw distance you can visit the church where the evangelist Luke's sarcophagus is located.

I envy you! Oh to see The Trophy of Epaminondas would be incredible! I appreciate that you put up a picture of it, wish there were more! Is the battle field still there? This is only the base of the trophy, and even the base has been long stripped of its frescoes and bas-relief, as well as the bronze appliqués. To have seen it fully adorned would have been a sight to behold, no matter when in time, or whom. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn’t agree more. The battlefield is more agricultural land with a small canal running through it but to think, the remnants of that war are all beneath it to this day - I hope one day you get to see it!
