Seems like a very complex culture especially with having two waves of Afro people that settled either willing or by force I worked for a women who was from Panama, her heritage was Jamaican banana farmers and she had this strange high yellow color. She was exotic in features but her heritage was a blur. I felt that she needed to explain that she was black. I remembered that she was very nice.

Wow interesting, my mother is Panamanian light skin black, my father was from Spain, so I am hot yellow so I find your statement to be very true it makes things difficult to be truthful, I am too light for my people but I'm too black for everybody else it's a double-edged sword, yeah TMI.

@@ricodominguez9291 it's beautiful I just came back in March. You would love it. The food is amazing not contaminated you can drink water from the sink. Everything taste different. Every where you go in Panama people greet each other. Totally different vibe from the US. You should visit, one thing about Panama if you can just say "Buenos días" just to greet... people will help you no matter if you don't know the language. Plus prices are cheap compared to the US. I can go on about the beautiful aspects of Panama.🔥💯❤️❤️

This is great information on Afro Panamanians in fact my great grandmother had afro panamanian roots to her as well besides the rest of my Panamanian family being of European - Panamanian heritage.. I want to mention something as a Panamanian myself 🇵🇦... There's groups of people that "CLAIM" to be Panamanian here in the United States that have NEVER been to Panama EVER before or have very little knowledge about the country as well and I only educated on what their parents have told them etc.... Most of those that falsely claim to be Panamanian usually are people that might have a grandparent who lived in Panama during the time of the Panama Canal construction and mostly spoke Caribbean English rather than Spanish because many were low income laborers who they came from Trinidad or Jamaica to help build the Panama Canal along with engineers from other parts of the world to also find a better job and opportunity. What actually ended up happening after the Panama Canal construction was that they were forced to live in a secluded area in Colon and near the Panama Canal because of racism and the Panamanian government did not want to recognize those laborers as Panamanians because they were brought by the United States to work in Panama .. Panama NEVER brought Jamaicans and Trinidadians to work in Panama .. IT was the Americans who brought them to Panama .... And that's why many left to live in Brooklyn NY or other places in the United States especially in the 1950s while some did stay and later on were given Panamanian citizenship after their children were born in Panama and even most do share more connection and ties to Jamaica/Trinidad than Panama SO it's why you have a lot of them that claim to be Panamanian and live in the United States that have never been to Panama and claim to be Panamanian and yet they don't even know who the Panamanian Artists Osvaldo Ayala is or Samy Y Sandra Sandoval because they are NOT Panamanian.......... And that's why I'm glad that this talks about the actual black Panamanians who are Afro Panamanians who were brought by the Spaniard and lived in Panama for hundreds of years ... And that's why present day areas like Bocas Del Toro there's a small group of them just like in Darien and Colon as well. Information on Panama is sometimes LARGELY INCORRECT because of people that claim to be Panamanian and are not and have NO knowledge to the country's history, culture, or even food ... They'll associate is Jamaican heritage instead and think that's Panamanian because they grew up with parents teaching them those things.

Xopa, and Yeah I'm Panamanian American and visit panama a couple times a year. My parents are of afro Panamanian descent. A mix of afro colonial and afro Panamanians of west Indian heritage. Your comment on the two groups is true. Whilst mixing of the two is important to note , hearing about the Black Panamanians that are descendants of enslaved africans is also important to learn about. And yes osvaldo ayala is a legend. Great traditional music of panama!
