I'm Afro Puerto Rican and we face colorism too. I love my dark skin and African features but I hate when other Puerto Ricans who're darker then me say that I'm not really Puerto Rican and that I hate being African. Its best to just look forward while respecting each other. If you talk about it as if it is a problem then you are essentially recreating the problem. In this generation Of America it is not even a problem because we do not live in slavery times anymore, yet there is going to be some stigmas left behind which will eventually dissolve with the coming generations. It was only a problem of "yesterday". However, it is still a problem in other countries and other kind of peoples are experiencing this problem everyday within different cultures such as women and children in Iran, and in China.....Liberia.

Deshone Robinson Caribbean blacks may have been there a long time and make up majority of population but most were brought over as slaves by white colonialist just as they were in US and other parts of the world. Some of us have different features than others depending upon what areas/tribes we descended from. If we don’t look pure African thats because of race mixing. My late fathers mother from Barbados alledegly had East Indian and white in her but my father definitely looked like a black man. Bottom line we’re black and descendants of Africa.

Where I’m from (New York City born & raised) if you dare call a dominican any form of black or African they will curse u out & become extremely upset. I have met very few Dominicans that acknowledge let alone be proud of their true roots. I know this does not apply to everyone because there are ton of Puerto Rican’s that are the same way however in my personal experiences in New York I find that Dominicans are extremely racist towards blacks & black culture more than Puerto Rican’s. Puerto Rican’s are much more Americanized & closer to black people (In the Bronx) at least.

Thank you for this video. My mother taught us about our afro-puerto rican heritage when I was a child. While attending school I faced prejudiced from my own "boriquas" because my skin was darker than theirs and my hair was thick and coarse. I received more acceptance from my african american school mates. Thanks again for this video. 👍

Good job my brother. The only thing that your missing is a few minor details about the mulattos that came from Spain in the initial trip to Puerto Rico as well as the part that the "ladrinos" had in this historical event. Lastly, I love the Bomba y Plena reference because its a direct connect to Puerto Rico and Ghana. I did my senior thesis on this very thing back in 93, and asked to be published by African American Historian. There are other things that could be added in a part two version. Just a thought. I also read one request about Afro-Mexican. I can help you if you want. Just a thought. I studied there and did research there too. I love this content. I'm so excited.

It's something that if you hear the last names: Escalera, Clemente, Quiñones, Pizarro, Calderón and Ayala, which are most exclusive in Piñones and Loíza. And we keep living close enough to the area. Piñones is a like the city and Loíza is like the state In P.R. When we say our last name, AUTOMATICALLY plp knows exactly where we come from. Those are last names that are still maintain originals or Virgin between afro-puerrorricans. An we love BOMBA most. We have a event every year it's call The Loíza Fest and you can see our customs. The TERM "SALSA" was created by the FANIA Record label (NOT only by Puerto Ricans) because they wanted to GENERALIZE all the various Afro-Caribbean (Spanish) music genres under ONE TERM. Even though each rhythm was DISTINCT and different from one another to musicians although NOT to the general public. For example: Cha-Cha-Cha, Mambo, Son, Guaguanco, Plena, Bomba, AFRO-CUBAN-JAZZ/Descargas, Merengues, Boleros, Seis Jibaro music & Boogaloo were ALL under the UMBRELLA TERM of "Salsa."

Claiming you are white because you look like you can pass for having exclusive (meaning only) European ancestry is called "Passing", which is an interesting cultural phenomenon that has extensive research in the social sciences. Some studies suggest that it is a self-abusive defense mechanism to help people deal with the unresolved shame of their internalized racism.

@@gjone1 If that's your passive way of implying that I'm a racist, I'll happily put that to bed by denying that absurdity. All my life I was referred to as "white" by my peers, and at least in the area I grew up in, being "white" was majorly due to skin color. I'm proud of my Puerto Rican heritage and always correct people that I am not "white" in the way they believe, which yes, is based on how I look. I only recently learned about the term "white passing" earlier this year. Forgive me for not referring to myself as such when that is still new to me.

Thank you for bringing this to light. Keep up the good work my brother.

European including French, portugueses, Spanish culture came from the caves like homosexuality, diseases, and from caucas mountains. They couldn’t see each other bc there was no sun light. Institution in Australia did to research on white people. Now in 2020 Puerto Rican practice blackface on public tv. Do your research.

U do not have to be darker skinned to identify or be considered as such. I am a light shade of brown (I do wish I had more melanin) HOWEVER I identify as Afro Latina because my parents are Puerto Rican & Haitian & I acknowledge, represent & take pride in my African roots. It sucks tho that I am not taken serious when I say this because the shade of my skin is “too light” to be considered an Afro Latina. It’s amazingly beautiful to be from such a great place.
