In this episode I cover the first two years of the Civil War for the 18th Mississippi Infantry, a regiment that served in Barksdale's Mississippi Brigade.

Jeff, there are so many things to like in this episode, including your description of the companies comprising the 18th and their points of origin, their officers, Master Dinkins' youthful commitment as well as his observation that the Confederacy was fighting other Americans, who in spite of their opposition to the Confederacy nevertheless demonstrated their mettle in battle. I was struck by your reminder that the noblest fell on the battlefield, which awareness had to bring about a mental reset for those who might have equated that quality of character with invulnerability and the protection of the Divine. Another excellent contribution! Thanks so much.

Very well presented history. My people were not involved on either side being very early settlers in the Rocky Mountains, so I appreciate a good factual account.

I noticed in the opening A P Hill was a captain in Camden rifles?? learn something new everyday...I have metal detected Lee's crossing in shepherds town and have some nice things from that battle. Why Porter sent a green brigade is questioned forever and once jackson took over Hill thrashed the regulars also. Thanx for this...the history(real history) of the civil was has been forever clouded.

The A.P. Hill in the Camden Rifles was Albert P. Hill, he was wounded at the battle of Leesburg and resigned his commission in April 1862.

Do you happen to know the location of the 18th Mississippi's Gettysburg Battle Flag / My Great-Grandfather was in Company C of the 18th. I read the C company was dedicated as the color company of the regiment just prior to the Gettysburg campaign ?
@scottbates7316 Жыл бұрын
Hello Mr.Betterton,, if you find out anything as to the whereabouts of the 18th's Gettysburg flag I hope you will share it. My g.g.grandfather was also in Co.C and was wounded at Gettysburg. He was pvt Patrick Burns and served in the company throughout the entire war.

There are three known surviving flags of the 18th Mississippi, and all of them are in the collections of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The first is the regimental flag of the 18th given to them by General Evans in 1861. This flag was captured by the 77th New York Infantry at Fredericksburg on May 3, 1863. The second flag is the flag of the "Mississippi College Rifles," Company E of the regiment. The third flag is that of the "Burt Rifles," Company K of the regiment.

Is there a list of units in which Southern Solders were in during the War of Northern Aggression? Or some website that would have a list of where the units were formed?
@mississippiinthecivilwar7700 Жыл бұрын
Robert, are you looking for an index of Mississippians who served in the Civil War, or an index for all Confederate soldiers from all the states?
