A British Commission divided the territory into majority Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India. In the chaos that followed partition, 15 million people fled across the new borders and 500,000 died in rioting. Four border regions saw the worst of it: Sindh, Bengal, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Among India's 565 princely states only Jammu and Kashmir had a Hindu Maharajah ruling over a majority Muslim population. India claimed the Maharaja decided to join India. Pakistan disputed this.
In October Pashtuns from Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province invaded Kashmir with the support of Pakistan's government. In October of 1947 the Maharaja left Srinagar. Indian troops were airlifted in but were ill-prepared for the cold and altitude. Pakistan responded with its own campaign and India approached the United Nations to broker a ceasefire which went into effect on January 1st 1949, establishing a line of control but no final border.
In 1962 China attacked India in the Aksai Chin region of Kashmir easily defeating India's poorly equipped Himalayan troops. China retains control of the Aksai Chin today. Three years later encouraged by China's success Pakistan sent troops across the line of control dressed as Kashmiri locals - the fighting proved brief and inconclusive. On September 22nd both sides agreed to a un-backed ceasefire. Another brief war broke out over East Pakistan in 1971 - this one conclusive. East Pakistan seceded. Ten million refugees streamed into West Bengal and, with India's help, Bangladesh was born. In 1999 after both India and Pakistan had successfully tested nuclear weapons, full-scale war was barely avoided when Pakistan tried to seize the cargill region of indian-controlled Kashmir.
At one time an average of one Pakistani soldier every four days and one Indian soldier every other day died at the Siachen glacier and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were reportedly planned by senior members of lashkar-e-taiba, which Pakistan created to fight Indian domination of Kashmir and which India accuses of terrorist atrocities all over India.
The conflict simmers in 2007, 777 people were killed in violence in Jammu and Kashmir bringing the two decade total above 47,000 by India's official count. According to some Kashmiris the total is twice that number.

What no one understands, that kashmir isn't a conflict, it's a business, a business of billions or dollars of arms for both Pakistan and India is sold to them, no international arms seller wants this problem to resolve. It's a billion dollar business for many 3rd party countries. And both sides army actually lobbies as agent of this arms companies taking bribe from them, and making their country and ministry believe that they really need more and more weopons. You fools don't know that both countries army Generals actually keep good contact with each other. They deliberately sometimes breaks ceasefire so they can keep justifying their's a reason arms purchase. And year after year it goes on and on. If we cared for the people of kashmir, instead of training them with rifles, we could spend the same money building schools and hospitals for them. Or simply we could bring the Muslims of kashmir here. But the question is do we want our Muslims back? Or all we want the Land of kashmir? We are more concerned about whom? If tomorrow India gives us a choice between the Muslim citizens of kashmir whom we always cry for / the land of kashmir which one will we choose? Far as I know, Beacuse we attacked kashmir, the owner of the land, Mr. Hari Singh officially signed and joined India. So if the owner has given the land to them legally how can we demand that? And if we say Beacuse Muslims leaves there so it's ours, then some Hindus live in Baluchistan of North Pakistan, can India claim baluchistan with that logic?

Pakistan-India, China-Taiwan, North Korea-South Korea all these confict zones are the result of Western Imperialism. Sadly although in many cases the Imperial powers have long since withdrawn, the natives continue the fighting to the death. You can read the same history all over Africa where Europeans have often used one tribe against the other to work, wage wars or capture slaves, carving the continent into territories that made sense only to European powers and turning the natives one against the other - antagonism which sadly still goes on today.

Haha, the vid convenietly forgets to add that when Pak attacked Kashmir for the first time, the King of Kashmir sought India help, Ind refused saying Kashmir was as yet an independant state so it should help itself. Defending it was not India's bother. The King then signed an accession treaty to India on Oct 26, which was ratified by Lord Mountbatten on Oct. 27, thus legally ceding the whole of Kashmir to India. Even Pakistan has acknowledged this much in the UN. Now that Kashmir was a part of India, India naturally had to defend the territory and it was only after this that India sent troops into Kashmir, in the first Ind-Pak war. Bottomline, largely due to Pakistan's stupidity, the King of Kashmir gave territory to India, in return for protection. Thus, had Pakistan not attacked, Kashmir would have never gone to India. India would have no claim to Kashmir, without this treaty of accession. Now with this treaty of accession, Kashmir is rightfully India's. Now being a typical hate based Islam fundamentalist nation, Pakistan, refuses to accept it and move on. It initially believed it could win Kashmir by war. However forget winning. Kashmir, they lost one third of its territory in the 1971 war, when India forces gave the Pak army a good spanking and helped create Bangladesh from the territory of Pakistan. This is the biggest defeat any army has suffered post World War 2. Pak then realised it could not win Kashmir and resorted to alternative ways to be relevant. It today supports terrorists in Kashmir and even trains them in Pakistan and then infiltrates them into Kashmir, hoping that it could get Kashmir.

After partition, India and Pakistan both were trying to woo the autonomies to join their countries. 3 states, namely Jundagarh(Guj.), Hyderabad(​Telangana) and Kashmir. Both Junagarh and Hyderabad decided to be a part of India. Kashmir said that it would decide whether it wants to be a part of Pak. or India, and till then, both countries should give Kashmir 'independent' status, and then sent the letter to each country. Pakistan SIGNED that letter. India asked for a talk but complied. However, by the time India complied, Pakistan attacked on Kashmir suddenly. This made Raja of Kashmir ask for India's help. India said, if you want us to help you, you should become a part of India,as we would be sending our soldiers and risking their lives. Raja agreed and SIGNED that Kashmir be a part of India. End of discussion. Pakistan should've been more diplomatic if they wanted Kashmir. At first they agreed, then suddenly they attacked. No professionalism,just violence. That's why, it's POK and not azaad Kashmir because it's not Azaad Kashmir, they're exploiting the youth for their own ulterior motives. @@the90skid79

The princely state of J&K became part of India on 26th Oct, 1947 after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession as per the British India Independence Act 1947. However, UK/USA/France continued to recognise the illegal occupation of Pakistan of Pok until 2001, and voted 7 times against India in the UN Security Council since India had close military ties with USSR. This immoral support from UK/USA/France gave a boost to Pakistan and it went to war against India in 1965 on Kashmir, followed by launching a large scale militancy in Kashmir Valley in 1989. Thus, in addition to the Kashmir issue not being resolved, the state of J&K (India) has been embroiled in military/terrorism since 1989.

Vikram Razdan ! While I agree with your contention for 'immoral support from UK/USA/France' to PoK, I want to highlight a point. Through out, the West (UK/USA/France) believes in the 'holding ' of the land physically, as the criterion for territorial sovereignty; for claim of a territory. This physical possession was (is) missing in respect of PoK. USSR was the only country that consistently supported & with commitment, that paved the way for 1971 war that clinched the issue with Pakistan - but not the Kashmir issue, simply because one can't do too many things in a limited time frame. Yet, we goofed up again to bargain with 93,000 Pak troops held as PoW s. At least an opening should've been found. Again the UNO & the various conventions secondarily & primarily the attitude of the Prime Minister (Nehru) was responsible for this global attitude. We (India) should (could) have taken this area, though there were limited opportunities. Any issue now, in (post War) international arena, is never confined between the two contenders in a dispute but acquires global flavour. Pakistan has managed the situation very well, with well-calculated moves, blunting any Indian initiative. India was never pro-active but reactive to Pakistani 'moves', every time. This led to a Pavlovian response, in matters pertaining to Kashmir. India has been reduced to a reactive (timid) country. What we claim ('de jure'), we must possess ('de facto '). The biggest reason why it happened is because India was a poor LD country (LDC) too, till almost 1991. The tide turned when India began becoming richer & Pakistan becoming poorer. Now the global situation is propitious for an Indian pro-active initiative & with a BJP government in the saddle. I tried & failed to educate my fellow Indians that an appropriate Indian 'defence preparedness ' shouldn't be misconstrued as an attempt at 'War making ', but as a mild deterrent. History taught (the West) that if peace is what one desires, he should be prepared more for war. It alone prevents a neighbour to attack a militarily 'weak' neighbour (instance is India). Military strength should be backed by posturing in foreign policy, that in turn supported by Economic strength. Hence, a poor country has everyone walking over it. Another thing is, in the name of J&K or Kashmir state, the people of the 'Vale of Kashmir' (eleventh in area, of the total princely state of Kashmir) were allowed by default, to dominate the whole princely state, oppressing the other regions. Now with repeal of '370' & reducing them to UT status after partitioning J&K, India owes it to General Zorawar Singh to restore Aksaichin till Demchok, while to its people for the restoration of PoK. Princely state of Kashmir isn't homogeneous but very heterogeneous.

The Government of India Act, 1935, passed when British still ruled India, provided that any state may accede to India or Pakistan (or choose to remain independent) by an Instrument of Accession executed by the Ruler thereof. The Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir signed an instrument of accession through which the state acceded to India.

The government of india act 1935 never said that. The act of 1935 after partition was basically an interim constitution for both countries to follow until their own are made. However the choice was actually given in the Radcliffe award in which the territories were divided and that option only went to to princely states not every other province or state. Plus the act of 1935 was passed in 1935 when Muslim League still hoped for a united india with muslims getting their rights, however this changed after the congress rule from 1937-1939 and then from 1940 Muslim League pushed for independance.

Indian Administered Kashmir is far more developed than Pakistan Occupied Kashmir; Indian side of Kashmir has national universities, better HDI, better economy than POK. I agree the problem can be easily solved by having a public pole of the Kashmiri people but to take up a public vote in Kashmir, according to the UN, there are 3 steps involved. First, Pakistan has to demilitarize the PoK area completely. Second, India to demilitarize Kashmir with just bare minimum army kept to prevent a possible attack from Pakistan. And third, is the public pole. Now you see.... the public pole cannot happen unless Pakistan demilitarize the PoK area, which they will never demilitarize because of the fear of losing it at the poles, as majority of the Kashmiri people would vote for an independent Kashmir instead of going to Pakistan.

Allow me to correct ur sentence. India never occupied Kashmir. During the partition Indian Government allowed to princely states whether to join in Indian Union or to Pakistan. Kashmir king decided to stay as independent and neither join with India nor Pakistan. But Pakistan send their Pattan tribals to occupy kashmir with the help of Pak army. When they reached near the capital Srinagar Hari Singh signed instrument of Succession with Indian Govt and India send their forces. Moin Aftab Accession was not made by sheikh but maharaja which was completely legal,as per Indian Independence act.Sheikh signed accord and he signed it as elected representative not some roadside punk.Also,a signed agreement is a legal document.A mere promise barked into the air is not enforceable under any law in the world.
