I was thrilled to be able to test many of these builds of Longhorn. Many of testers who beta tested Vista, urged Microsoft to reconsider. Many people felt Vista was not ready for public release because of the reset from Longhorn. There were many driver issues and performance issues that would later be resolved in service packs, but ultimately Windows 7 was what the vision was supposed to have been.

Do you know why the blue Plex theme changed to the Slate theme? Plex feels more complete and in-line with what the pre-reset vision seemed to be.
@netsendjoe Жыл бұрын
@@TSwany Normally when Microsoft was developing UI, it was always blue shades simply because the blue shades caused less strain on the eyes for those who used their computer all day. (Allegedly) Because if you've read about blue light and how it keeps people awake. I'm not sure exactly how the Slate theme came to be, but I was very happy with it. My only guess is that Slate was their early work at creating a dark mode for Windows. When they released Royale Noir for XP, I used it constantly and even installed it when upgrading clients computers. I should also note that early concept art for Windows Blackcomb which later became Windows Vista and fully realized in Windows 7 also came with similar UI styles that could be made dark through configuration. It wasn't until Windows 10 and some updates where dark mode would be truly realized, personally I prefer the black background with white text. I've been a closer and overnight worker for so many years so yeah that influences that. The light.. it burns us. LoL

I just absolutely adore the whole Vista Aero experience. People can talk shit about the gloss and "controversial" design-direction all they want, but it had an utterly pristine, pixel-perfect attention to detail in its design that Microsoft has never replicated since. I think Windows Longhorn was reset because the Windows Team was adding a lot of features that were supposed to appear in Windows Blackcomb/ 7, and also because the pre-reset versions of Longhorn were using the .net framework, which was very unstable at the time of Milestone 5 to Milestone 7, so Microsoft decided to scrape off the .net framework and the features that were added, and base the system off Windows Server 2003.

But you forgot to mention the “onghornLay rofessionalPay” era.
Don't know why Microsoft decided to completely reset development of Longhorn just because the developers were confused about what features should be saved for Blackcomb. Would of been much easier to just scrap Blackcomb and get development on Longhorn rolling. Work the bugs out, polish up the interface, decide on the theme, and create one great version of Windows. Would of been much easier than standing developers in front of a plain Windows XP codebase and have them start from scratch. Guess Microsoft was just too keen in having a sub-release between XP and the next big game-changing OS.
@oemDef7 жыл бұрын
As far as some rumours go, the issue here was .net framework which was extremely unstable that time. And the point was that during pre-reset Longhorn development they tried to introduce not only too many features, but the most of them were built using .net. As a result the system was like EXTREMELY unstable. That's why they have reset the development. In Vista they tried to use a little bit more stable core than Windows XP and have got rid of .net framework apps/features or tried to rewrite them in the other language. AFAIK, the only .net app/feature in Vista is Windows Media Center.

The build's visuals seemed a bit unimpressive compared to the concept. The Music folder was amazing. Folders as we know it are literally just windows with draggable files and not much else. I'd have loved to use Longhorn. It fits in the mid-2000's perfectly. Kinda sad how it got reset. I'd imagine the future to be a lot different. EFI SUPPORT IN A BETA OS FROM 2003? Heck, that would've probably REVOLUTIONIZED the whole market, maybe our tech would be a lot more advanced just because of that feature. Sad to see it dropped for 9 years until 8 came out. I also find it interesting how it mixes Y2K and Frutiger Aero aesthetics

Vista wasn't buggy like Longhorn was, it was just a resource hog and had very high requirements for when it was new. You needed a top end PC of the time to run it smoothtly, vista had a bad launch but after a while it was fine and is just as good as 7, infact i'd say Vista SP2 and 7 SP1 are nearly identical with only a few minor differences like taskbar and included apps etc.

Please note that Windows Vista will end its support next year, so you better upgrade to either Windows 7 or Windows 10 (Which requires Windows 7 anyways if you want a free upgrade)

4051 seems like the major breaking point of Vista. MS tried to migrate into .Net and WPF as much as possible and Vista was a little bit too early. The only redeeming feature for Vista was composing window manager with hardware acceleration.

If Microsoft would still support Longhorn (Mainly the 2003 builds, those were the golden days of longhorn), I would consider installing it as my main. as it´s basically Windows XP

What a great video, good to see you use great software like VM, it almost felt real when viewing in full screen, I kept going for my mouse, loved the look and feel of longhorn, but then again I loved XP, so much so, that I have XP pro on my system using VM and a few Linux distros too. keep up the good work, nice one.

If you don't Activate Windows XP and bypassed it , explorer.exe will terminate every minite (whistler 2465 didn't terminate), Now on vista , you can bypass it "Use your computer in reduced functionality mode" since SP1 , you can use it as normally. Same as Windows Server.

To be honest, I would have preferred keeping the original XP sounds for Vista rather than just placing them behind a piece of glass (Yes, the Vista/7 sounds are literally XP's sounds behind glass.).
@livonium4 жыл бұрын
Well, you're not wrong, but you can't say there aren't any changes: the shut down sound was changed, the startup sound has changed, the hardware related sounds (USBs) are very close to XPs ones, but they're different from just putting the sound fmthrough the glass like the other sounds.
