I love that you've created this video! I've been tweaking my own setup at home, and I have been considering offering it as a service for people exactly so that they can avoid monthly security fees. I know there's a bit of a learning curve for those who are unfamiliar with tech, but I'm happy to help educate and assist anyone who doesn't really know what to do or even what questions to ask. Good on you sir!

great vid Brian! One thing about samsungs multi sensor is that in the settings you can switch it to "use on a garage door". This turns it into a tilt sensor. I use this on all four of my garage doors.

FYI, the newer SmartThings Multipurpose Sensors have a garage door mode where it uses the built in tilt sensor to detect when it is open rather than the contact sensor. To set it up, go to the device in the app and tap the 3 dot menu at the top right and select settings. From there tap "Use on garage door", select yes, and then tap ok. Then just mount the large part of the sensor near the top on the garage door and you are good to go. No need to mount the magnet.

Yet another great video, Brian. You put a lot of work into this. I have one concern about the V3 and that's that it doesn't have batteries like the V2 which will continue to monitor some things even when the power is out...unless that has changed. Samsung has been pretty elusive about exactly what works and what doesn't on batteries. Consider sometime doing a video about using a Samsung multipurpose sensor on doors using the magnet and again without the magnet, using vibration???

Thank you for the full walk through It was long, but there is a lot of good information here. I like the Samsung Vision sensor. I can see it as being a good replacement for motion sensors to be honest. I would call it sensor more than a camera though. I know it grabs images, but they are not really recognizable as images like a normal camera. Definitely a great option to prevent false positives though.

I'd like to set up some sort of proximity sensor that I can put on my dog's collar that will alert me when she is at the back door. Suggestions? We are moving to a new home and it will be more difficult to hear the hanging bells that we taught her to ring when she wants to go out. (When she wants back in she scratches at the door which is not ideal.) We just purchased a doggie doorbell that she can press with her nose to launch a chime. It hasn't arrived yet, but we will try to switch her to that at the new place. A tag on her collar that activates a chime when she gets within a foot or so of the backdoor would be a better solution. Even where we live now, if I am working in my basement office, I cannot hear her if she wants back in, so while I work, I need to keep an eye on the camera that watches the back door. I'm hopeful we can successfully transition her to tapping the doggie doorbell when she wants in or out.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 2 жыл бұрын
I think the doggie doorbell training is a great idea. Most of the proximity sensors won't work well outdoors in the elements and while you could try to hide them away, I feel like reliability would be bad. I'd probably combine a camera that can detect animals with your doggie door chime. Maybe with that you can also trigger a contact sensor that can also act as a switch. You'd have to do a bit of wiring. The other idea I have for you is this. It's similar to the contact sensor and it uses the same idea, but you could make it like a pad your pup will walk on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnrNlGqGlq-cZ6s

@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for the feedback. Our 5-year-old beagle took to the hanging bells pretty quickly. Our hope is the change to the new home, in addition to switching to the doggie doorbell, won't be too much all at once for her. The doggie doorbell just arrived so maybe I'll try some preemptive training before we move in 2.5 weeks.

Hi Brian great video, I’m tempted to try this out but surely if the power fails or an intruder manages to disconnect your power then isn’t the alarm useless?
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the sensor devices are battery powered, and if you put a battery backup on your hub, you'd maintain a system in your home. Something like a Siren would then be a form of protection. You'll have to check what happens to your ISP when power goes out, but I think you could get around that too! Most of those services remain online these days in power outages to homes, but again you need the router/modem to remain online.

Sorry if you say it in the video as I'm just starting to rewatch it & I think I already asked you but does smart things work with Google assistant or is it just through Samsung? I believe they are Samsung products & which do you prefer Samsung smart things, Google, Wyze, & zigbee or whatever that one is called? Sorry I'm still debating & trying to decide which to go with & getting ready to do my own smart home security system. So I guess which do you prefer or even if you prefer certain products from each company? & Do any besides the Google products work with Google assistant/Google hub? I mainly use Google so that's why I'm leaning towards Google. But I used to be all about Samsung & esp Samsung Galaxy products. But now I have the Google pixel XL 4 & the Google pixel slate plus the nest hub max & a few nest mini's which I started with my tablet & basic stuff to set up & turn my older but still nice tv into a smart TV in my room bc I got a new bigger & super nice smart TV for my living room. But now I'm really getting into turning my house into a smart home & am looking at various products & really want to put up cameras & do security along with all the other cool stuff like light bulbs, plugs, sensors, cameras, & just all sorts of fun things coming out now as well as the Google speaker. I might go the cheaper way with sensors & cameras & go with wize but curious if smart things are around the same price or quite a bit more expensive? Sorry for probably repeating myself & I'm going to make lists & prices plus which works with Google. I know Wyze doesn't but the app can still work with my pixel so if the price is really right it's not a big deal at least to start with. Also I don't know a lot about zigbee too so curious if them & smart things are around the same price as smart things or which is the cheapest & which you prefer for the price. I know the Google cameras are probably way better but of course will cost a lot more. Thank you for all your great videos & helping me turn my house into the future & a smart home! I love your videos & info & always watch you first & most vs any other tech channels bc you aren't biased, your honest, & you like Google & Alexia stuff & don't make it sound like apple is the only option & I only eat apples! Lol sorry so long & probably confusing & thanks again for such simple & great advice!

Hi Pirate! So to answer what I can here. Samsung and Google do integrate but it's basically one way. Samsung -> Google. Routines in Google don't YET allow you to do much to make the integration really powerful. Stay tuned there. I prefer Google just for voice control really. It's a voice interface for the specialty situations. Samsung runs my everyday and my normal lifestyle. :) And Apple isn't much of an option, yet! Did I catch everything you needed? OH...Wyze. Wyze doesn't have great integration with either yet, and the prices for Nest Outdoor cameras have come down quite a bit. Maybe have a look aftermarket too...there are deals to be had. And soon, Nest will integrate with SmartThings and Google reallllllllllly well.

Is there a system, DIY specifically, which would not only detect motion in certain areas but also triangulate through multiple sensors where is the person, which room, and where in the room, and show it on a map/layout of the house? This has to be doable, it shouldn't be much complicated.

Do you run your SmartThings hub behind a UPS? It seems like currently you are vulnerable under power loss conditions. Also, if internet goes down?

My main hub is on a UPS, yes. I'd get about a day on the UPS, cause...if the power's out for that long...we have bigger issues. Internet goes down, I lose knowledge of the security system's status but it still works. That means things like cameras, sirens, etc., all still work.

It is possible with the "Hue B Smart" smart app found here (community.smartthings.com/t/updated-jan-2019-hue-b-smart-groups-scenes-remove-popcorn-effect/95397). If you use this, you will have to first disconnect your Hue hub from SmartThings and then connect through the Hue B Smart app. One major downside currently is that if you try to open a bulb or group in the new SmartThings app, it will crash and reboot the app. Opening a scene works fine. So does using the bulbs, groups, and scenes in automatons. In order to open the bulbs and groups within SmartThings you will need to use the Classic SmartThings app for now. They might fix it in the future, but no guarantees there.

A lot of phone lines are like that too so even traditional systems can be compromised. If you want it to be serious you could have a 4G backup system. My ISP provides a modem that has 4G backup if the fixed line service fails. This is backup for both internet and landline. That avoids the snipping cable issue completely. The backup is no extra cost either. It comes as part of the basic service.

@@AutomateYourLife my neighbour is complaining about them as he claims they are invading his privacy. The ones at the back he claims overlooks his garden and the ones on the side his drive. They do a bit. How do I avoid a lawsuit?

With a camera, you're going to have to look at your laws! Not something I can advise on. Maybe just adjust them and show the feed though so your neighbor calms down?

But what if they use a jammer ?
@AutomateYourLife

Well then depending on what frequencies they jam, it's going to be tough. This would be the same as an installed security system though, as those use Z Wave and you can use Z Wave here

Annoyingly, I can't seem to use Google's own speakers to say aloud alerts or sirens. Anyone got any ideas on how to do this?

Just bought then returned a Samsung smart tag. It was not so smart. I’m a pass on Samsung smart things.

I clicked dislike because I know a system can be built using old old technology for a fraction of the price and easier to hide

Why do you use smarthings and not hubitat
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 4 жыл бұрын
I have Hubitat and it's great, but ST just gives me more options for connectivity and I think in terms of a future platform it holds more value.
