I saw him at Claiborne Farm in 1989. The farm probably had the best stallion roster in its history then (Nijinsky, Private Account, Danzig, Mr. Prospector, Secretariat, and not counting the Marchmont section of the farm). He was a big, rangy bay. He was in the same barn as Secretariat, who was still alive and healthy when I saw him. Nijinsky had battled a hoof disease for years before passing in 1992, but when I saw him, he was led out of his stall and seemed to enjoy all the attention from visitors. It was something to see an English Triple Crown winner (probably the last ever) and an American Triple Crown winner in the same barn.

Enjoyed this Nijinsky documentary very much! I did notice something that I had never thought of before......did any of these owners ever pet this horse? Give him scritches? Show him kindness? Did his groom? It kind of seems that they only saw him as a money maker, not a living creature.

Plenty of them were affectionate towards their horses-this was the end of the private stable era, when many/most owners were breeders and were in racing for honors, not for money. Since racing, training and breeding were commercialized, most owners are now e.g., Peanut butter magnates who hardly know one end of a horse from the other. While Nijinsky's owner was not from the horse world per se, I was impressed by how interested in and conversant about the stallion's breeding he was, and how observant of his personality traits.

Yeah. Other people (not me) are suggesting City of Troy may be like Nijinsky. (I am not qualified to make such comparisons.) In any case, he just had a wonderful two year old season. I will be watching if he goes into the 2000 Guineas race. Also, I think he has a nice temperment. I do think that his silouhette resembles his sire, Justify, when both are seen from a distance.

It’s because of horses like Nijinsky we can’t allow the media fool the gullible into believing a horse that avoided the Irish Champion Stakes, the Epsom Derby and the Arc is the greatest horse ever. Popularity shouldn’t be confused for talent.

He never avoided The Dewhurst The 2000 Guineas. The Champion Stakes or The International. All Races of equal and in fact better esteem than the Races you mentioned there.

@@HorseRacingLegends would you ever cop on, the 3 racing nation’s in Europe are Ireland, England and France in that order, the biggest race in Ireland is The Irish Champion Stakes, in England the Epsom Derby and France the Arc. The races you called equal to them are all secondary to them for god sake, don’t call you platform horse racing legend’s if you’re going to devalue real legends like Nijinsky, Grundy, See the Stars etc etc for a media hyped horse who didn’t harrow what the real champion’s ploughed. Shame on you if you do.

@@johndonnelly3135You are deluded and Irish Biased if you don’t think The International is of the status of The Irish Champion Stakes.First of all it was started before the Irish Champion Stakes and Horses of probably equal status have won both Races. You stated Grundy there who got beat in The International at York in 1975.Aidan ran City of Troy in The International in preference to The Irish Champion Stakes and ran his second string there.Maybe Sir Henry thought Frankel wouldn’t stay a mile and a half.Is that a crime. You are living in the past if you think The Derby is The Greatest Race in England. Not anymore it’s not and Nijinsky is held in the Highest esteem on here. Why get on the back of Frankel.Timeform rarely get it wrong by. Much and I stand by their Rating of him.My Personal opinion goes for nothing and this Platform is only a Hobby for me and is not monetized and definitely not Anti Irish/English in any way.You don’t need to watch any of it of course.Shut the door quietly on the way out if you’re leaving.
