How sweet! What a nice training exercise, you could see how much she was trying and how willing she was. Brought tears to my eyes, thanks for helping this little horse out.

People don't seem to get it that they are living creatures, and not motors. But that is an impressive hill, and to see her pulling it so willingly for you almost brought me to tears. It takes courage for any horse to do that, but for one so small who has been taught to balk, that takes real trust and love. Bravo!

Just listening to the way you praise horses says volumes. My Arab cross is similar to Magic- very loyal, willing horse who wasn't treated with enough understanding. Most people, for some reason, have trouble reading a horse like that. I'd trust him to you in an instant. I sure hope you have some apprentices who are learning to look at horses the same way you do!

That was pretty impressive. She had the courage to do the hill and then wanted to trot at the top, with a heavy carriage. Actively listening too.

I smiled through so much of this video. What a little darling she is! So sad that someone hurt her so much she was afraid to move. To get her going again in three weeks is a phenomenal accomplishment. And to that standard too. She is one of the lucky ones who landed up with Barry. Others will have the long slow journey downhill to the slaughterhouse. Because of our stupidity.

Now this is absolutely brilliant. Everything about kindness is beautiful and can take alot of work to get a horse to trust and really put effort into their work all because of some people that hasn't got the heart to do things right in the first place due to it being so easy to just force a horse to do things if it's harsh bits, spurs, whips that get used too much / get used in the wrong way or even using barbaric methods like you see with people that get them horses to walk and trot and really lift their legs up high from the moment they touch the ground because they have had harsh chemicals put onto the bottom of their legs. Or even leaving their heads strapped down tightly to their chest to make them look good in an older method for dressage. People that take the time to give a horse a chance really deserve the effort the horse gives them. Well done to everyone out there that will take the time with their horse instead of using force and abuse.

Just to add whips can be used for good. Like if your horse is half blind might be used as an aid if your horse is going to walk into something that could harm him. Obviously you got the aid of your voice, hands, legs, feet, body ect but sometimes things go wrong and a whip could help you reach the area to push or move the horse away from an area he shouldn't be going. Spurs..can't really say a good use for them but suppose they can be used lighter than your own legs but never tried and felt them myself to know. Same with bits only soft ones I use.

The more i watch your videos the more I love the way you train, I never though i'd find another trainer that was up there with Rick Gore on the "We are the horse's only hope, everything we do effects them so we have to do it right for the horse" scale. It's fantastic. Thank you so much for your videos!

Well done, sir! I'm just getting ready to start a horse who also has the reputation of having balked in harness, and I suspect the same thing. He's very slight and underweight and I suspect he's been asked too much, too soon, when he hadn't the fitness to pull the carriage. He too is very loving, and will give you his heart, and I suspect his heart is broken. I'm so glad to see she has recovered. I'm planning on hooking him with another horse to help him get fit and get confidence.

I don't think those cars even know how lucky they are that they are around Barry Hook and his expertise with a horse and carriage. I wouldn't feel ok driving past a horse and carriage except Barry Hook driving the horse. Clearly I've seen some scary things that have scarred me! Thank you for being professional, kind and smart. These horses thank you too.

Going over a highway like that scares ME. It is amazing and wonderful that Barry trains his horses there, and that they take it in stride like eveything else he teaches them. I think he is a true master. Very entertaining, too. Much to be said for his kindness and consistency.Thank you for posting these videos.

probably the best video you`ve produced,i hope she go`s on to do great things in a loving home, hats of to all the team at HDP you`ve shared some moments with us of horses with all sorts of problems but i can`t remember one as messed up as magic, and its because of all your skill and patience that she`ll be able to move on and hopefully put her past behind her,it make you wonder what her future would have been if it was`nt for your thoughtfulness, thanks for sharing it!

As an owner of Spanish horses, I can tell you that they are worlds apart in most breeds with how you handle them. They are so sensitive and intelligent as well as hard workers that have their own "person". I think of them like German Shepherds in a dog sense. They will give their heart and soul to their person.

You know, you guys seem to be skilled trainers who took on a tricky job and brought a frightened mare a long way. This video would be SOOO much more effective if you clipped out the defensive commentary. You seem to be anticipating blame for not having done more with this horse when, in fact, you have accomplished a great deal (and haven''t actually been blamed for anything). There is much to be learned - and taught - from the tough cases. Why not use that?
