Interesting. So, eventhough if a certain character only appears at important subplot hell still be memorable? If that's what you meant then it sounds so obvious now I think about it.

How do I protect myself from legal claims on the contents or storyline of my novel from people whom I have interviewed to gather technical, scientific, or other information that I need to build the real and fictitious "world" of my story? Do I have them sign waivers prior to my interviews, or are there other means? This may include readily available public domain information, as well. I'm not talking about word for word plagiarism. I am more talking about concepts, ideas, or general information from others' work products that I may use in my story.
