The sermon was good, and Gary is correct in that we need to not feed into those who want to cause problems for the sake of causing problems. Toxic people can indeed ruin anything they touch. Additionally, Pastors must ensure they are not divisive and lead their churches effectively. I'm not referring to Cornerstone when I am saying this. Cornerstone has fantastic leaders. In my experience, I've observed that many churches suffer because their pastors and staff tend to hastily pass judgment on individuals without effectively attending to the congregation's needs. Instead of prioritizing the well-being of the church members, these leaders often allow their pride and ego to take precedence while accusing others of displaying similar traits when questioned. This overconfidence in their moral and spiritual superiority can taint even the most skillful pastor. There is a difference between someone who wants to cause problems and someone who expresses a genuine hurt or concern in the church and is trying to get some resolution on an issue that God is placing on their hearts. When pastors fail to demonstrate genuine care and empathy for the people in their congregation, it can lead to neglect and disappointment. It is important to remember that while God is the ultimate authority in the church, pastors are entrusted with their positions because they are expected to possess the qualities of humility, non-judgmental attitudes, and compassionate nature toward those they serve, regardless of how famous or popular they are. For any church, it's unfair to expect regular churchgoers to adhere to a higher standard than their pastors or staff. It's clear that not all pastors fall into this category, and most pastors are wonderful strong men of God who lead and Shepard with humbleness and love, like Gary. However, some do exhibit a lack of attentiveness toward understanding the motivations and intentions of others. This understanding is crucial for effective leadership. Leaders in the church may find it challenging to provide practical guidance and support to their congregation when they are frequently preoccupied with issues unrelated to their church community, such as other churches or engagements not related to family or friends. Pastors are responsible for ensuring the presence of competent staff to address the diverse needs of their congregation, which is particularly crucial in the context of a mega church. Effective communication is essential in limiting or preventing divisiveness. It's important to draw a line between those who bring up genuine concerns placed on their heart by God and those who seek to cause division within the church. Many church issues can be resolved through direct, personal communication rather than being indirect and impersonal. It's essential to prioritize developing and improving church leadership skills in a church as a whole. We've observed that nearby churches have faced struggles and decline due to ineffective leadership and divisiveness that they caused, by being deceitful or smearing people to promote their own agenda. For a church to function effectively and cohesively, active participation and commitment to being unified are required from the churchgoers and the leadership. It is essential to acknowledge that the responsibility for a well-led church lies with both the churchgoers and the leaders. Failing to recognize the role and impact of leadership within the church may lead to the perception that the church does not properly emphasize or support the guidance provided by the Lord regarding the nurturing and care of the congregation with a Christ-centered approach to shepherding, spiritual guidance, and leadership. I appreciate the strong leadership at Cornerstone. Unfortunately, many churches are struggling due to a lack of effective leadership. Unless this changes, these churches will continue to face challenges and may even decline to the point of shutting down their doors.

If you are married to a person who does not walk with the Lord, A house divided cannot stand… How do I navigate? Married 33 years-it’s been so very difficult. I became a believer 2 years after we got married- He accepted Christ as a teen- But has no interest in the Bible or church… I feel constant tension- I know I’m guilty of bitterness- This waiting is excruciating! Especially during this election time! He and his family are against my beliefs! I repent and feel hopeless at times- but God!! I continue to trust Jesus no matter what!! Lord have mercy!! I was praying for you Gary when this came to mind, I think it speaks into your current situation very well, be encouraged. Luke 16:1-13 16 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was [a]wasting his goods. 2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’ 3 “Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’ 5 “So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A hundred [b]measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred [c]measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ 8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous [d]mammon, that when [e]you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own? Ephesians 6:12 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Gary, did you know that we have spiritual, not human, enemies who want to divide the entire church against itself? What are you and the chapel going to do about that? Are you going to be a crusty stack of salt worthy of Jesus’ praises for the nations or are you going to replace his vision with a narrower paradigm of your worst self’s making? For your encouragement: The Pilgrim’s Regress By C. S. Lewis From the great concourse of spectators, shadowy people came stealing out to his side, touching his arm and whispering to him: and every one of them appeared to be the wraith of some old acquaintance. First came the wraith of old Enlightenment and said, ‘There’s still time. Get away and come back to me and all this will vanish like a nightmare.’ Then came the wraith of Media Halfways and said, ‘Can you really risk losing me for ever? I know you do not desire me at this moment. But for ever? Think. Don’t burn your boats.’ And the wraith of old Halfways said, ‘After all-has this anything to do with the Island as you used to imagine it? Come back and hear my songs instead. You know them.’ The wraith of young Halfways said, ‘Aren’t you ashamed? Be a man. Move with the times and don’t throw your life away for an old wives’ tale.’ The wraith of Sigmund said, ‘You know what this is, I suppose. Religious melancholia. Stop while there is time. If you dive, you dive into insanity.’ The wraith of Sensible said, ‘ Safety first. A touch of rational piety adds something to life: but this Salvationist business . . . well! Who knows where it will end? Never accept unlimited liabilities.’ The wraith of Humanist said, ‘Mere atavism You are diving to escape your real duties. All this emotionalism, after the first plunge, is so much easier than virtue in the classical sense.’ The wraith of Broad said, ‘My dear boy, you are losing your head. These sudden conversions and violent struggles don’t achieve anything. We have had to discard so much that our ancestors thought necessary. It is all far easier, far more gracious and beautiful than they supposed.’ But at that moment the voice of Vertue broke in: ‘Come on, John,’ he said, ‘the longer we look at it the less we shall like it. ’ And with that he took a header into the pool and they saw him no more. And how John managed it or what he felt I did not know, but he also rubbed his hands, shut his eyes, despaired, and let himself go. It was not a good dive, but, at least, he reached the water head first.

I love Gary and agree with the spirit of what he says here. Usually I agree 100% with all he says but I see a problem with some of what he's saying here and a couple of untruths. The problem is that folks will take what Gary says as absolutes and forget what he said about context. They will see ALL divisiveness as sin and something God hates. That's just false. Jesus Himself taught us to be divisive in some things. I could go on but I won't use this to make my own sermon. Instead I'll end by specifying one of the untruths to hopefully highlight and emphasize my point. Gary said the first thing that God did when sin entered the world was to bring about reconciliation. False. The first thing God did was to divide. He divided His Spirit from Adam & Eve. As promised. The reconciliation did not come later until He sought them out and clothed them with animal skins. Pastor Gary also mentioned Ananias & Sophira. There's an example of the Holy Spirit dividing. Paul writes to the Church in Corinth to divide out the wicked man. Paul writes that a little leaven leavens the whole loaf. So it is NOT always Satan that brings division and my fear is that folks will take what Pastor Gary says here and run with it without thinking it thru. If there is one thing today that divides more than any other it is Correction. I can't count the number of times I've seen people accuse others of being divisive simply because they were rightly corrected. Gary specifically said, "So remember, wherever you see division, remember it is Satan that's behind it." That's simply false. Does Gary practice Church Discipline in his church? Has he ever had to excommunicate someone and put them out of the church because they were unwilling to confess and repent of their sin and be restored? Was Satan behind that? Not only is Satan not always behind it because sometimes it's righteous division but it may also be the Flesh and/or the World. Another thing that MUST be understood is that the "divisive person" Paul writes about in Titus 3:9-10 is the HERETIC. NOT just any old body that doesn't agree with you and all that you do. I'm just trying to point out the DANGER is what Gary is saying if it's not qualified. Gary himself admitted that he's had to fire a couple of people over their being divisive. Well, isn't that itself divisive? The four divisive qualifiers were good but, again, they're subjective in the sense that those who can't stand to be corrected will often say those things about the one bringing correction. One thing that wasn't addressed that I really would've like to have seen addressed is the subject of denominations because MANY people who think all divisiveness is bad are OFTEN complaining about the number of denominations and the divisiveness that comes from it. Whereas that is a divisiveness that is a VERY good thing. Think about the level of confusion and strife that would be in a church where there wasn't a "like-mindedness" wrt to Level Two issues alone!

Standing on the principles of the Word of God often causes division in the “church” because many “Christians” refuse to follow what God says in His Word. Then they call those who are standing fast on Truth divisive and say things like “God hates you.” I’ve been in a church where the pastor destroyed the congregation and drove off everyone, but those standing against the wrong things he did were the ones people thought were in the wrong. Only one single congregant still goes there. Horrible and ungodly things happened there, but WE would be considered the divisive ones for standing against the evil and not giving in to what the pastor demanded. I think this message was handled poorly, because it wasn’t hammered home that standing on Biblical truth is NOT divisive even if it brings division. We’re not to forsake everything for the sake of “unity.” You only pursue unity in Christ and truth, and if standing in Christ and truth brings division then you are NOT the divisive one, when even Christ himself said He came to bring a sword which is a tool of division.

Were the prophets of the Old Testament driven from the temple due to them standing up to divisiveness? Weren't the Pharisees and Sadducees not simply expert teachers on the Law, but they were also highly involved in the politics of Jerusalem? If the gift ministry of a prophet stands up to a religious leader, and he is speaking the truth against pride, ego, envy, jealousy and divisiveness disguised as godliness, wouldn't the prophet be known for walking with God? With the Christian Church in America today are we not handicapped in the church by being worshippers of title? Jesus Christ called his church to follow Him, which is to follow the discipline of the Word of God. Most Christians are not disciplined. The man of God gets driven from the church to maintain "Pastor Appreciation' which has now turned into 'Pastor Worship' rather than following the gospel. Allot of churches in America are spiritually dead today because they cannot recognize they are following the divisivness rather than the truth of the gospel? I state this because last summer I was teaching a Sunday School Class of which I used John 10:10 as an example that yes, the devil can kill us; yes, the devil can steal of the Word of God from us; but if we are truly a Christian convicted in the heart, the devil cannot destroy us. The pastor in the church stopped my class that morning and said all the students: 'The devil cannot steal the Word of God from you!' I responded with: 'Surely, you have not read or understood the gospel of Mark Chapter 4. The seed is the Word and all these groups of believers, were indeed believers because in each instance it says the received the Word of God by faith. Faith only comes by the holy spirit.' Every one of my students turned their attention from me, teaching the class to the pastor who had misspoken against the Word of God. In today's Christian Church do you see many pulpits facilitating the divisiveness and driving the prophets and teachers from their churchs on the base of pride and control?

FYE is for your encouragement, be blessed. business . . . well! Who knows where it will end? And how John managed it or what he felt I did not know, but he also rubbed his hands, shut his eyes, despaired, and let himself go. It was not a good dive, but, at least, he reached the water head first. …. I watched this journey in my dream a long time. At the outset their goal was heard of only by rumours as of something very far off: then, by continuous marching, winding their way among the peaked and valleyed lands, I saw where they came down to the white beaches of a bay of the sea, the western end of the world; a place very ancient, folded many miles deep in the silence of forests; a place, in some sort, lying rather at the world’s beginning, as though men were born travelling away from it. It was early in the morning when they came there and heard the sound of the waves; and looking across the sea-at that hour still almost colourless-all these thousands became still. And what the others saw I do not know: but John saw the Island. And the morning wind, blowing off-shore from it, brought the sweet smell of its orchards to them, but rarefied and made faint with the thinness and purity of early air, and mixed with a little sharpness of the sea. But for John, because so many thousands looked at it with him, the pain and the longing were changed and all unlike what they had been of old: for humility was mixed with their wildness, and the sweetness came not with pride and with the lonely dreams of poets nor with the glamour of a secret, but with the homespun truth of folk-tales, and with the sadness of graves and freshness as of earth in the morning. There was fear in it also, and hope: and it began to seem well to him that the Island should be different from his desires, and so different that, if he had known it, he would not have sought it.
