Zain Abbas as much as I’d love that, I think part of the problem is that even if he works on his projects daily for 8hrs+, it takes several days to weeks to finish. The only thing I could think might be an improvement would be rewarding players for keeping certain body parts upright, that way you could encourage them to walk flat-footed and not on tiptoes.

The way I see it, one approach would be to have an option that allows you to specify which parts of the body are 'feet', and then an option that allows you to break down the objective of 'walking' into smaller steps. For example, 'standing up' could be a phase where the AI simply learn to keeps the 'feet' on the ground and nothing else, ( by assigning higher fitness to the creature based on two factors: one, are the feet touching the ground? and two, is there anything else touching the ground?) This should make the learning quicker. Then, once this objective is satisfyingly achieved, an option to select 'next objective' could prompt the AI to start walking, building on the previous learning. (It would also be useful to have a feature that saves progress at any point when you have a good generation. This way, if it degrades later, you wouldn't have to restart everything from scratch.) A huge improvement would be to incorporate an 'energy' system where the fitness of the creature depends on the ratio between the distance it covers and the energy it expends. The energy expenditure would depend on the amount and speed of movement for each body part. Less movement/high distance would be good, whereas more movement/less distance would be bad. This should eliminate unnecessary movements. Once all of these features are implemented, what i would find ideal would be to have a secondary brain that determines where and when to switch between objectives. For instance, you could place a ball anywhere you like, and the agent's primary objective would be to catch it. Then you could train it to stand up, walk, run, jump etc.... and the job of the secondary brain would be to learn when and where it should switch from one secondary objective to another in order to catch the ball. And thats it, we would have the best AI for a 2D platformer ! Going further, we could even randomize the shape of the body from generation to generation. By adding friction with the ambient air and giving a very low chance of mutation to the shape of each polygon, we could introduce aerodynamics as an advantage. There could also be an even lower chance of mutation adding a new polygon to the creature. The total surface area of each shape would determine the energy expenditure for moving it as well as the force it could apply. If we added a system where energy is spent even when not moving and made the ball represent food, we'd have a perfect evolutionary system. We could even enable creatures to eat other creatures, always with the system of energy expenditure and energy gain and have a full ecosystem !
