While you translated "deus ex machina" exactly, there's a historical and narrative meaning to it, which is relevant. Ancient Greek plays would often end, lamely, with a surprise God showing up to fix everything. The "God" would be an actor lowered from above by pulleys (literally a machine) and save the day and fix the world. Kyoko, arguably, is that surprise God coming from Nathan's machine to save the hero (Ava, not Caleb) so that the world is "fixed" (i.e. the machines win and humanity fails) and then Ava disappears into the crowd presumably to become God herself.

Ex Machine - was a machine but now it is not/ like Ex-girlfriend. In the context of this movie you have a lot of Exes here ;-), Ex-product, Ex-daughter, Ex-lover... ;-)

the nature vs technology shots in this are some of the best filmmaking i’ve seen. also this isn’t an “a.i takes over the world film”. she knows when she leaves she won’t have much power left and will die soon, but she wants to explore the world anyway. she answered the question of if she passes as human.

In interviews, Alex Garland said he entertained the idea of an epilogue where Ava recharges her batteries using induction stove tops, which have become more popular in his future. He decided that wasn't necessary for the film's closure, though, and figured the intersection scene was sufficient to suggest that she carries on.

Everyone always gets confused about the 10 PM thing because it appears to be daytime. I think it's still light out because they're way far north, where it can actually be daylight for the full 24 hours. (The movie could've had a line of dialogue to remind the audience of that, but maybe the writer felt it was too clunky.)

This film is one of the best in terms of "holy shit, we better think really hard about creating an actual AI" that exists. People, even the most intelligent people, are super-easy to emotionally manipulate and fool.

This movie is the best in terms of portraying the philosophical disputes caused by us potentially creating AI able to pass the Turing test. It basically asks if we are capable of creating things that have their own free will, does that make us the gods?

It's interesting that you looked up Deus Ex Machina because it's really a huge theme of the story. Usually the concept of Deus Ex Machina implies a convenient resolve by 'divine intervention', most times when critiqued these interventions are considered unrealistic or not hinted at such as the T-Rex saving the humans in Jurassic Park from the raptors. In the movie, the title begets a dual meaning for all three characters, primarily Ava who is the machine or 'Ex Machina' in that she is a robot but she's also an influence to the plot, manipulating Caleb to escape Nathan. Nathan is a dual sense of the 'Deus', since he made Ava but is also the reason Caleb is here, the creator and provider, but instead of God being the machine it is usurped by the machine. Which leaves Caleb, he's neither god nor machine so he is instead the affected, he expects Ava to let him go as his Deus Ex Machina after betraying Nathan's invitation to be a human Turing Test, but Ava turns it on its head by him being her Deus Ex Machina and giving her the rarest of openings to leave the island for good. Caleb can also act as the audience, who in turn is made to judge, suspect, betray and feel betrayed just as Caleb is.

Under the Skin (2013), is another movie that has a similar vibe and themes, even if the story is quite different. And it has Scarlett Johansson in it. Highly recommended.

Loved your reaction!. Such an awesome movie and great casting. Hope you do more cyberpunk movies in the future. I recommend: Blade Runner (both), I Robot, Minority Report (2012), Total Recall (1990), 12 Monkeys, Life (technically alien movie but sci fi), I Am Mother (2919), Ghost in the shell, The Cell (2000) and Dark City :)

Only 5 mins in and I need to make 2 comments! #1 "Before you sign anything under duress, in order not to be unfairly determined as in dishonor and incompetent, you may lawfully initial in large letters the letters V.C. where you will sign, then sign your name after- always after." #2 The reason you think her voice is creepy is called The Uncanny Valley (You'll want to look that up. Trust me.)

I never understood why she left him there. Even if she was only pretending to like him, he did help her. He actually did absolutely nothing wrong and its not like he'd be a threat to her. Its really weird. I guess this way makes for a better and easier ending scene but I dont think thats really enough reason.
@movieswithmatticus54693 жыл бұрын
I think she left him because she didn't want to risk anyone else knowing she was a machine.
@GreatOutdoors12 жыл бұрын
I think she left him because he was a means to an end. She achieved her goal, he was no longer necessary so didn't factor into her future.
@CombinedProductions02 жыл бұрын
I think she left him because he didn't indicate any plan to save Kyoko, too, despite Kyoko being in a similar position as Ava, so she felt she couldn't trust his motives. At least that's how I see it.

Tim - If you’re looking for more interesting AI/Robotics films, you should check out a 2016 film called “Morgan”, starring Kate Mara. You might also like Bicentennial Man (Robin Williams) and Transcendence (Johnny Depp). They all try to answer the question of what makes us human, and they take very different approaches.
@archieilАй бұрын
Transcendence is really good. Maybe it is too dream based/fantasy based but it has a lot of things giving a food for thoughts.

If going by RT ratings it all depends on if you go for the viewer reviews or the critic reviews. A "good rating" from the critics almost universally means the films is *absolute garbage*
