"Enemy of the State" is my introduction to Tony Scott at the age of 6, and it really blew my mind. And because of that, I began checking out Tony Scott's other works such as "True Romance", "Crimson Tide", "Unstoppable", "Man on Fire" and "Top Gun". Moreover, "Enemy of the State" is my favorite Tony Scott movie, and Will Smith and Gene Hackman are absolutely perfect in the movie.💯

I'm loving Jen's taste in Movies. This is one of my all time favourites! The pace is fantastic, not a wasted scene in it. Most films promise a lot in the third act but never deliver. This has once of the best finales that I can remember. The way he tricks his two enemies into killing each other is genius! I saw this in the cinema 25yrs ago and it still holds up well. 10/10 for me! The debate about liberty and national security is even more relevant today than it was back in 1998!

I think Reynolds' comment "He, (Hammerlee) was killed for a purpose, where the tape?" More or less confessed to Reynolds' part in Hammerlee's death. As to the NSA guy's claim it was a STO, (Standard Training Operation) fucking ridiculous: "Oh yeah I happened to be with my boss and the NSA team one fine summer morning in the park, we got fucking high and just randomly broke this old guy's neck, (have no recollection of the event), who happens to be a major political opponent of the present Data Surveillance Bill in Congress, who's one of the main reasons for holding back my boss' dream job at the NSA." "Afterwards, we jerked off by staging a "training operation" by chasing a random guy across a US state and a District for a "fairytale video tape" until my boss and team become the mice in an Italian American joint and we didn't go in for the cheesedips."

Absolutely. I love the plan on the board when they are trying to listen to Rachel and Robert. The layout is almost identical. 😁I love companion films like these. Robert Redford has a couple of those. Sneakers (1992) can be followed by Spy Game (2001). Then he's also in Brubaker (1980) which can be compared well to his role in The Last Castle (2001). Variations on a theme played by the same actor, years apart. Great parallels.

@@yzolakitchi Ironically, TOP GUN: MAVERICK and THE COLOR OF MONEY share some parallels too (both star Tom Cruise as well). Both movies are sequels to films released decades prior, and both show the older lead of the sequel (who played the protagonist in the original) show the ropes to the younger generation. THE COLOR OF MONEY is the sequel to THE HUSTLER (which had Paul Newman in the lead).

That unnerving feeling; This movie, plus They Live, V, Outer Limits, and a few other shows are responsible for most of the conspiracy theories today. Most people have forgotten they saw these movies and shows, remember them only subconsciously, and when conspiracy theorists throw around the plots of these movies as fact, It "feels true" to the believers. They don't know why it feels so right, but they have this sense of "I knew it". Yeah, of course you knew it, dummy, it's a movie plot that you're half ass remembering.

A little correction: Michael Bay was heavily influenced by Tony Scott. “Bad Boys” and “The Rock” are the only films of Bay that didn’t use a green screen. Also, Tony Scott used very little special effects or CGI, unlike Bay (which is what he’s known for). Scott was a painter before he became a director (he started out doing a lot of commercial advertisements, along with his brother, Ridley), and he considered his films as paintings (the use of certain colors, etc). After “True Romance,” Scott has shown he can do character-driven films that were still commercially successful (crimson tide, enemy of the state, Deja vu, Man on fire, all whom were made by Disney). His collaborations with Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer goes all the way to “Too Gun.” While Michael Bay is a great popcorn entertainment filmmaker, Scott was a action director whose films had substance.

Born and raise in DC, and yep, it definitely rains a ton here. We have a higher annual rainfall than Seattle, even though reputations might suggest otherwise. It’s probably the most accurate part of this movie’s representation of DC. I didn't know that Will Smith agreed to do it for less than his usual pay because he wanted to work with Gene Hackman. I love it when actors have that much respect for another actor. I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters. It was definitely ahead of its time, especially with regards to how omnipresent mass surveillance is now. I grew up before the Internet was a thing, so I was always old-fashioned when it came to giving out any information. Now people just post everything online, without a second thought... During the pandemic, I went back to college remotely and earned a couple more degrees, one of which was in Environmental Science. My favorite aspect was Remote Sensing, which basically involves using satellite images and the electromagnetic spectrum to analyze the Earth's surface. Spy stuff aside, this can be used to monitor the health of forests and crops, impact of climate change, etc. Currently, the highest resolution for a commercial satellite is 30 cm. Just imagine what the government has.

We didn’t know it at the time, but this movie was foretelling the future. All of that, plus a ton, is more than possible now. As for the right to privacy, all humans have a fundamentally innate right to it, the US Constitution commits that to US law.

Not so much foretelling but more like revelation of the method. It's a tactic wherein they show you what they can do and what they are willing to do, oftentimes what they will immediately do. They do that basically to show their cards in the game and if you don't object than that absolves them of responsibility (in their minds) and go ahead with it. Hollywood is part of system that conditions the public mentality. If a movie is to display any faction the government then the government usually gets a say in how it's being presented to the public. As for the Constitution, you'd have to be really specific as to which one since their has been at least four variations of it since the original signing. The most recent was done very recently with the U.S., Canada and Mexico signing a North American Constitution.

If you haven't seen it yet, Eagle Eye with Shia Lebouf is a pretty decent NSA conspiracy movie to watch.

Have you two seen High Fidelity? That is one of Lisa Bonet's biggest movie role, but I didn't hear either of you mention it. It would be a GREAT watch.
