This is the composition and story of a true force of nature, a maverick, a beacon of hope for the equality of women everywhere-the great Bangalore Nagaratnamma. A RIVETING rags-to-riches story of a woman, a Devadasi, a saint who accomplished feats that are unfathomable for her time. She republished an erotic novel (Radhika Santvanamu) after numerous legal battles and a government ban, built a temple for her patron saint, Tyagaraja, over his Samadhi in Thiruvayyaru, fought for and successfully achieved the right for women to participate in the Aradhana, conducted a "Shraddham" (a Hindu last rites ceremony) for Tyagaraja, and so on. (Please read the extraordinary book The Devadasi and the Saint by historian V. Sriram.) Now, you will have to do a bit of multitasking-read her story in the captions below the video while watching Narthaki portray it, all while listening to and keeping in mind the meaning of the Javali composed by Nagaratnamma in Khamas. I’m attaching the meaning of the Javali below. "Shouldn't you say something, my love? Holder of my very life, having accepted my love, Shouldn't you say at least one word, just now? The moonlight falling on my eyes seems Like the burning sunlight And the buzzing of the bees puts fear in me Shouldn't you say something, my love? The mild breeze is driving me mad My beautiful body is losing its lustre Shouldn't you say something, my love? Cupid's arrow has pierced my body Is this fair, O Narahari of Namagiri?" - reference- "The Devadasi and the Saint" by V Sriram

Sriranjani, you have done a marvellous job of bringing this kriti to life. Your sweet voice has added several dimensions to the portrayal by Narthaki. Sriram’s book moved me to tears; your rendition along with Narthaki’s abhinayam made my heart heavy. You’re a perfectionist, seeking the ultimate in anything you do. God bless you and Narthaki.
