• Jean Redpath (1937-2014)
Garrison Keillor:
"Of Jean Redpath an admirer wrote 'Jean was blessed with a divine voice. She was additionally blessed with a fabulous smile and a quick wit which, along with her Scottish accent, endear her to people immediately. What is most admirable about her, however, is her backbone. A person doesn't make a life singing Scottish traditional music on the basis of charm. She has a fierce devotion to the music, as a Scot and as an artist. Everything she most deeply feels and believes in - about death and love and country and womanhood - comes out in these songs. The songs aren't pictures. They're rocks. They are the mountain itself'."

Jean Redpath lived in the house directly opposite our house in Lower Largo in Scotland. We didn't see her all that often because she was away touring a lot of the time, but she was a lovely lady. Always very friendly and she had a lovely smile.

The first time I heard Jean was at the Burns Festival in Ayr, Scotland. She was doing a joint performance with BBC actor John Cairney . She came over to Edinburgh University later on and sat on the floor of my dorm under the sink and sang for us until the wee small hours. She later came to Virginia and sang at ODU and stayed with me. No one like her.

A unique and beautiful voice . A lost to Scotland . I believe in traditional music , as the true history of Scotland . No internet ,phone , we made our songs and music and passed time with music .Sadly this too is fading . however Jean Redpath was the most beautiful and influenced somewhere their must be a voice who can carry out our traditional songs ,

I wish Jean could have stuck to Scottish traditional songs, Americana just do not suit Jean Redpath's range and excellence.

I saw her in concert in San Francisco in the 1970's. Not only did she sing a beautiful concert, but she taught the audience the wonderful round I still teach my students: "I sat next to the Duchess At Tea". It's on KZbin and a teacher is teaching it so you can learn it.

IF YOU COULD WAIT (Shay Healy) If you could wait a moment longer, The sun would rise before the morn. The shadows from the skies would vanish, And the day be twice as long. Every minute be an hour, Every hour a loving kiss, Every kiss a fresh spring flower, Sparkling in the morning mist. If you were here again beside me, The running waters I would hold. And turn their flow to you, my lover, To wash your feet, your hair of gold. Every drop a silver crystal, Every crystal all aglow, Every glow a breath of beauty, From your skin like dimple (?) snow. But since you've gone, the light has faded, Birds are silent in the wood. The grass still trampled in a hollow, Marks the spot on which you stood. Every tree a sad reminder, Every branch a memory bare (?), Every memory tinged with sorrow That you are gone and I still care.
