Quakers today work to end violence in the world's worst conflict zones. The peace loving religious movement was born 350 years ago, out of the horrors of the English Civil War and spread to America - Pennsylvania is named after the early Quaker, William Penn. George Fox, was inspired to found the movement during an intense spiritual crisis as he walked through one of the most remote and beautiful parts of northern England. Alan Clowes runs a 400-year-inn in the heart of this 'Quaker Country". Here he follows George Fox'sjourney and we hear Fox's inspiring words, and see the dramatic outdoor 'pulpit' where he preached to thousands.

Beautiful mountains. Not at all surprising that a man might have a religious experience in such a beautiful place.

What an excellent and Friendly description of the earliest Quakerism and so sympathetically presented! I have some reservations about David Boulton’s assumption, e.g. that George Fox had never heard of Seekers before he met a large group of Westmoreland Seekers, but other than that, this is a well-presented and thought-out programme.

A very inspiring video. Hopping to be able to visit, at some point in my life, my original Quaker Meeting (Bristol RedLand Quaquer Meeting). Greetings from Colombia, South America.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm just starting to explore Quakerism and a big part of the reason I've chosen this path is that I grew up almost in the shadow of Pendle, not more than two miles from Alan Clowes' pub. I moved away many years ago but still get back occasionally and just a couple of weeks ago I was there. I drove right past the Cross Keys, in fact, and would have called to say hello if I'd been aware Alan may still be there. I've been seeking some kind of truth for many years. So far, the Quaker way is feeling right and this video has certainly contributed to the growing feeling that maybe, just maybe, I've finally found the place where I'm meant to be. Thanks again.

Alan and his wife Chris are still there, dispensing black pudding, very fresh eggs and other lovely grub aside from spiritual refreshment. I'm sure Alan would love to say hello.

Roger, some sad news. Alan died the other day after a short illness. I'm glad that the film will remain as a lasting reminder of a lovely man
