Do you typically move forward with addition on this “journey” through the materials and then go back to the same materials for x, -, div? Or allow for using the materials (like the stamp game) for each operation before moving on? Or concurrently? Or depending on child’s interest? Thanks l!

Great question! According to AMI training, you do introduce all of the golden beads with every operation before moving forward to the next material. So you would introduce every operation with the golden beads and then switch to the stamp game and introduce all the operations there before moving on to more advanced materials. I will try to make a chart to show this progression because the visual really helps! There are some teachers who will introduce just one operation at a time, but that is not how I was trained. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that each new material of these operations are a new level of difficult and abstraction. If the child's mind is not ready for the new isolation of difficult and isn't ready for the new level of abstraction with the next material, then they should not proceed to the next material. That is the logic behind introducing all operations with the same material and then moving to the next level of difficulty and abstraction. If you aren't concerned about following Montessori exactly by the AMI manual, I think you can play around and do what is most logical for your situation. I would just evaluate their ability to handle the next level of difficulty in a material. Sometimes we introduce something and realize they aren't ready for it, so trial and error definitely happens. If that happens to you, just allow the lesson to come to a natural conclusion and bring them back the material that is right for their stage of development. One of the signs of the child being on the right material for them is how much they are repeating the lesson. Once you see them go from repetition of the lesson to boredom or disinterest, that's a good sign they are ready for the next lesson. Although some of the older students (tends to be my kindergartners) will repeat easy lessons to avoid hard work, so that's when knowing your students' personalities also plays a part in whether they are ready to move forward. I tend to find that some of my kindergartners need to be challenged or they will always choose to repeat the easy works they did a year or two ago! Demonstrating their mastery over old works is an important part of their third year in the classroom, so I don't discourage it, but it definitely needs to be balanced out with challenges.

@@mykidsmusic229 Same here, but you know after we get through training, teachers will change things how they want. I definitely seen teachers move through all the addition work first on all the materials before even introducing another operation. This was a great question I forgot to address!
