My sympathy to all the victims and their suffering families. The victims' loved ones suffer with this for the rest of their lives. When I see a horrible case like this I can't help but ask how a once innocent baby grows up to be a serial rapist and serial killer. What happened? What could have been done to change Long's trajectory from child to ruthless serial killer? Were there recognizable signs? I just have to wonder. I am grateful to all the law enforcement people who worked this case. It had to be a nightmare for them as the body count increased. Thank God that Long's rape victim had the presence of mind and the courage to observe everything that she could and report it all to the police.

These comments are fucking sad. It's not just "fight or flight", there's also "freeze and fawn". It's automatic, it's very hard to control if you have no training in dangerous situations, and even if they had the "right" reaction there's still no guarantee it would have helped them. Those of you blaming the victim disgust me, you're part of the reason victims don't report crimes.

My sympathy for all the victims and their families. My sympathies to the wounded State Trooper and all the law enforcement people who might still have nightmares about this predator. The Wilder case never should have gotten as far as the FBI. He was caught long before that in Australia for kidnapping and raping children and had been allowed out on Bail! It seems that the Australian Justice system was ahead of the USA justice "system" in going to hell in a hand-basket! Their idiocy in Australia allowed the predator Wilder to escape to the USA to kidnap, rape many children and young women. We know that at least 9 women were killed by Wilder and he is suspected in yet more deaths in Australia. Thank God Wilder managed to kill himself while trying to murder a cop. From Wiki: Wilder married in 1968, but his wife left him after one week when Wilder was taken in for questioning over a series of sexual assaults at Manly Beach.[10] After their divorce, Wilder's ex-wife told law enforcement that he had attempted to seduce both his mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and that she had found pictures of young women in their underwear in a briefcase inside his car. She also admitted to the police that he had twice attempted to kill her.[10] In November 1969, Wilder used nude photographs to extort sex from an Australian student nurse; she complained to police, but charges were ultimately dropped when she refused to testify in court. Wilder emigrated to the United States in 1969 and lived in Boynton Beach, in an upscale waterfront home twenty-five miles south of affluent Palm Beach, becoming successful in the real estate business. He frequently travelled to Hawaii and the Bahamas and also developed an interest in photography which resulted in his converting a bedroom of his home into a darkroom.[10] Between 1971 and 1975, Wilder faced various charges related to sexual misconduct.[11] He raped a young woman he had lured into his truck on the pretense of photographing her for a modelling contract.[7] This was to become part of his modus operandi during his later crime spree. Despite several convictions, Wilder was never jailed for any of these offenses.[12] In 1977, a psychologist deemed Wilder a "mentally disordered sex offender" and "not safe except in a structured environment and should be in a resident program" and also noted his need to dominate women and turn them into slaves for his pleasure.[10] He had expressed interest in white slavery and spoke of his sexual fantasies which involved twisting a woman's nipples during sex and slapping and kicking sexual partners. While visiting his parents in Australia in 1982, Wilder was charged with sexual offenses against two 15-year-old girls whom he had forced to pose nude after luring them from Manly Beach. His parents posted bail and he was allowed to return to Florida to await trial, but court delays prevented his case from ever being heard, as the eventual initial hearing date of April 1984 came after his death.[13][14] Two other young girls, aged 10 and 12, later identified Wilder from mugshots as the man who had abducted them in Boynton Beach in 1983 and forced them to perform oral sex on him.[1] With idiots running legal systems we are all on our own and need to remember it.

That"s frightening ... during Christopher Wilder's crimes in FL/GA there was another suspicious person going up to young Women in Northern FL 'offering to photograph' them (were they interested? 1985-1986) ... one a new mom; with her infant; who naively initially presumed he was interested in taking "baby photos". Mind you there was no camera, equipment etc. That suspect looked nothing like Wilder. A 1970's hippie look ~ 30+/- years old. (Closer to #2 in the photo line up.) Northwood Mall Tallahassee, FL.

Apparently a lot of people have not. And presume to know what they would have done as a 16 yr old tortured, ab*sed, terrified and mentally broken female. I want to think my 16 yr old self would have done anything to avoid having another person being harmed, but I've never been in that situation so I just don't know. I know my 60 yr old self now would take whatever chances, tell him what he wanted to hear and then as soon as we were in public, run for it. But at 16 our brains are not fully mature and even then, some are more mature than others. I did things at 16 that I would not do now. I'm glad both she and the girl she went with him to capture, survived. I'm sure she suffered enough guilt when she recovered that she sure doesn't need random strangers judging her for what she did in a desperate situation. It's hard to say who's mind will stay strong and who's mind will just fall apart under that kind of horrific situation. Most of us are just lucky we never had to live through something like that.

Some of these cops are not to smart. They should of been able to catch that guy in less then two weeks after finding the tire info and carpet color. The tire is on a 1984 Cadillac, the color of the car can be determined by looking at the Cadillacs with red carpets in the model range they are not going to put a red carpet in a green colored Cadillac so they should be looking for a white, black, or red 1984 Cadillac and determining the ave times of death and when prostitutes roam the streets gives a time of when the killer is out there looking for victims, you can put about 20 woman cops out there as fake prostitutes looking for that car, and it seems the killer is out there more then once a week you can catch him easily.
