there's also another way to create kilonovas and it's sadly a very likely possibility on earth any moment plus kilonovas have happened from 2 super giants colliding along with 2 giant comets half the size of Jupiter having a collision but that was a negative kilonova and everything was completely frozen including the nearby stars which all are now the so-called "void" stars aka "the scariest most dangerous star" even tho honestly the star in your solar system is actually the scariest one compared to the 5 green stars that exist...

But they can't know, they can presume. Like all science, hypothesis driven, the most accepted, becomes what's taught. Then other science nerds come up with other hypothesis, and if theirs manages to trump the one before it, then that is taught. Some are solid and become proven. Scientists can never forget ,that at one time science deemed the world was flat, that was taught as fact. But it took one or 3 science nerds, who didn't think the same way, and didn't accept this current fact, why, ?? Because it was no fact . It was a guess, a hypothesis on how things worked then. That is the beauty of science! Too often I think viewers forget all that, and when these "facts" arent in actuality facts, yet , we do young minds a disservice. I often think before certain concepts being presented it should begin with a precursive " We think that this is such, and so right now, with the information and current data, we have on hand.." But no ,time and time again all just stated as if it is fact, when we don't have the data we need to know for sure. Beautiful , simple and the foundation of the scientific method.

It is really mind-boggling to think that a similar explosion could possibly kill every living thing within hundreds of light years. I remember an episode in Star Trek Voyager talking about the crew of the Voyager finding a beacon left behind in a lifeless part of space by intelligent beings used to living in a star system closeby that was totally destroyed by a supernova. There was nothing those beings could do except build a beacon stored with their precious memories and send it out as the only survival evidence of their ever existence.

Except in real life, there's no way to know you're in danger. It'll happen in fractions of a second. We would never know what happened. An extinction level GRB could be headed our way right now and there'd be nothing we could do.

@@Suicidal_Soy_Sauce Any civilization at our current science and technology level should know which stars close-by will go supernova long before the explosion. We can’t predict exactly the moment yet. But we do know if something like that is coming up in the near future, say, the next 1 million years, which is a very short period of time in the sense of astronomy. For example, the red giant Betelgeuse in Orion is actually coming up for supernova. (Or that may already have happened but the light of that event hasn't reached us yet.) Luckily it is 600 + light years away from us, so except for a phenomenal show in the sky there won't be any danger to us. That's the benefit of our solar system located in a quiet suburb of the Milky Way galaxy.

FUN FACT: the kilonova explosion actually happen millions and millions years ago, because the light from the explosion takes time to get to you because of how many light years you are from it. For example the sun gives os light, but the light takes 8 minutes to get to our planet, so if u think about it if you are looking at the sun, you are basically looking at the past sun. Now because the kilonova explosion was/is thousands and thousands of light years away that means that it already hade happened , but is just that we were looking at the “past” kilonova explosion. And yes I’m a nerd 🤓
