A Krampus Carol by Anthony Bourdain

Krampus is Santa Claus' whip-toting Christmas sidekick. According to legend, Krampus joins Santa where he tends to the children on Santa's naughty list. No coal here though. Instead, Krampus whips and licks children into shape or carries them off in his sack.

My mom used to scare me with the krampus when I was little and even when it was not Christmas she would always tell me if I'm ever bad it krampus is going to come eat me and I used to live with fear at night until I was relieved to hear from my dad that it wasn't true. Which that was when I started to live with my dad when my mom lost custody for being a bad mother

I'm a mixture of giggles and tears after watching this. When I was little my grandmother threatened me with the Krampus legend whenever she thought I was misbehaving while visiting her for the holidays. So on one hand this 'carol' reminds me of those precious Christmas family moments as a child, but on the other hand it reminds of the traumatic times I spent envisioning a child-abusing devil creeping through the snow-covered deciduous woodlands of rural Wisconsin.

Knowing full well the lofty caliber of Anthony Bourdain's creative and deeply inspirational writing abilities I made certain to gather all of my grandbabies around the monitor to view this Holiday story. I wanted them to dip their toes into a more expansive pool of festive offerings to encourage global enlightenment in my precious little ones. Afterwards, all but one scurried right back to their chores. This little one, who called my husband Krampa, wept quietly in the corner. She'll recover.

When I was watching a program about how Christmas is celebrated in Europe, I realized ours is either the only or one of the few cultures where Santa does not have an evil counter-part. I thought it was interesting.

The 'Krampus' figure is as known as St.Nicolaus in Austria: his 'day' is Dec. 5th, the day before St.Nicolaus, and in every town in western Austria people dress up as Krampus to frighten the children. In other parts of the Alps he goes by different names; in Tirol, certain villages have huge crowds watching as hundreds of 'Krampus'es roam the streets reminiscent of Pamplona in Spain. In Scandinavia he has survived as 'Julebukk', still horned and evil, chasing children at Yuletide.

Violence begets violence, the problems we have with society these days is because of the violence against children that has been normalized for decades. Normalization is NOT normal. Considering is NOT learning. The science is here and had existed for years, corporal and degrading punishments cause chemical brain trauma. It's actually quite a psychotic and narcissistic thing to believe. People who believe **violence against children** is, in any way, acceptable are usually the ignorant ones who skip out on the broad education on child brain development health before having kids, curious... Do you hear yourself? No such thing as a bad student, only bad teacher. Seek a bit of therapy, it really guides a long way. I'll recommend you the wonderful, evidence-based book *The Whole-Brain Child.* it's a good read going into the science behind developmentally appropriate behavior, brain/nervous system development and most healthiest and most respectful ways to cooperate with a child or young person. Remember, children are right-bearers, they are family members, not subordinates. Violence only begets more violence so it doesn't "work," conditioning is NOT learning, it's chemical brain trauma. Cultural desensitization to casual violence and degradation against children does NOT mean it's normal, it's just *normalized,* there is a big difference we ought start getting educated on before we further lose the caring society you'll have to grow old and infirm in.
