Julie I hear from expats, that life in Dubai can be very challenging and isolating after awhile. I think it it is the lack of nature, and the lack of older buildings. We do not fully understand the psychological effect of modern materials (steel, cement, glass, plastic) upon us. But all of the straight lines, and flat surfaces, do have an effect after a while. Stay alert to these effects. People come and go there. That is why they pay much more than other cities. But at a certain point you will have to ask yourself 'Is it time to go?' I wish you well. More importantly I wish you good health. Emotionally and spiritually. კარგად იყავი!

As Friedrich Hundertwasser said "Die gerade Linie ist gottlos und unmoralisch." "Die gerade Linie führt zum Untergang der Menschheit." - Perhaps I wouldn't go as far but it's true the lack of nature and older buildings has a negative impact on us.

She must have moved over there for professional purposes (urbanistics), so I guess it's temporary. :) I understand the point that it's artificial, but I don't think there's much spirit left in European large cities either. Overpopulated places with heaps of rubbish all over the streets and constant traffic congestions, full of the homeless and beggars, and generally a lot of people with psychological issues.

Ich habe Deutsch in der Schule neun Jahren gelernt, aber ich habe schon fünf und zwanzig Jahren nicht geschprochen. And I was always curious about your age. ;) You wouldn't believe it, but I still do remember some German grammar and rules, although I always have had lack of vocabulary and conversation practice. (German was obligatory and only language available at the time in my elementary school.) The paradox is that I never took any lesson of English language officially (any where), and English is now my first foreign language, although I studied Polish language at university. LOL ;) And Spanish and Italian I speak a little bit and I understand more of it. I also learned some classical Greek and some modern Greek, and I'm always happy when I come to Greece because it gives me an opportunity to practice my basics. I have started to learn even Japanese language, knowing now some basic phrases. O, Julie, you are not alone in this world of language lovers and eternal beginners! Srdačni pozdravi iz Hrvatske! Kruno.

Nice video, as always. I suggest you go for Arabic but still keep to do some German in parallel. You will find out that there are a few peculiarities that both languages have in common like e.g. the order of digits when speaking numbers or some words with multiple different meanings having exactly those same meanings in the other language. As basically everyone in Dubai speaks English and most people there do not speak Arabic, you might have to go for a trip to neighbouring Oman for practice, or go to the more rural parts of the UAE.

Arabic is one of my favorite languages. I hated it when it was my job to translate it in the Navy, but years after I got out I picked it back up and applied it to a different purpose (reading the Bible and other such Christian pursuits) and suddenly found that I now loved it. (Praying for help with it was a big reason for this! It's a hard language, but with God's help my understanding skyrocketed.) I might be going to Cairo to teach English later this year, and I'm looking forward to using my Arabic for real!

I've been learning German myself for 3 weeks and even though the pronunciation and grammar is not einfach, it's been nevertheless a rewarding process. For me personally the pronunciation of the CH as in Ich it's been the most difficult one For grammar it's a headache to make the distinction between GERN / MAG and NICHT / KEIN
@PerisemioticsАй бұрын
start out with the velar fricative as in _ach_ and move your tongue ever so slightly to the front while sustaining the fricative until you hear the softer friction from _ich_ practice again going from say _Loch_ to _Pech_ and so on... (usually the uvular fricative - the initial and intervocalic _r_ - is the one that is hardest for foreigners to acquire unless you're French =P)

@@anguineus_vir I might be a little late but hopefully this will help you: How to pronounce CH: it depends on the region and accent you want to pick up, but it's normally pronounced as if you were going to shush someone, but placing your tongue behind the lower teeth, then letting a stream of air through. Gern vs mag: "gern" means "gladly" or "with pleasure", therefore it is an adverb (a word that describes a verb). Hence, "gern" is only used with verbs (words you can put "to" in front of, e.g: "to eat", "to want", "to be", etc.). Mag, on the other side, is used with nouns (words you put "the" or "a" in front of, e.g: "a moon", "the idea", "a sandwich", etc.). Examples: I like books: Ich mag Bücher ("mag" is being used for the noun "Bücher") I like *to read* books: Ich lese Bücher gern ("gern" is used because we have the verb "lese") Kein vs nicht Kein negates nouns (as explained before, words that we put "the" or "a" in front of), while "nicht" negates everything else: verbs, adverbs, adjectives (describing words), pronouns, etc. However, "nicht" can also negate nouns provided that we're talking about a specific noun. Examples: I don't like fruit = Ich mag *kein* Obst I don't like *the* fruit (maybe the one you bought, but not that I dislike fruit in general) = Ich mag *das* Obst nicht Hope this was helpful
@anguineus_vir17 күн бұрын
@@kevineleven8006 Very much appreciated, especially about the negation with Mag and Nicht in the same sentence. I'm on Section 4 on Duolingo's German course and I've been using an app called Dictionary by Netzverb, highly recommended

Best wishes for your new life in Dubai ... and learning Arabic! - and many thanks for all your fascinating videos. My main difficulty in learning any language is the old one - I can quite quickly get to be able to ask a question, but understanding the answer is a different matter! I wonder if these language apps can teach the secret of how to grasp quickly the meaning of words and sentences spoken colloquially at normal speed - usually fast, often with dropped syllables or word-endings, and using 'street' vocabulary ... are there any secrets to finding out 'what the hell are we talking about?'

I find it fascinating that Muslims worship what they believe is piece of the moon in Mecca in the Kabba. Hence the symbol of the crescent moon. This continued worship of the moon, pre-dates Mohammad. Another interesting part is that the current Mecca in Saudi is the third site, and third country of perceived origin. Pity the Imams do not teach this. Why would that be ?
