The fact that Cocteau made his boyfriend the Beast AND Gaston AND gave him a shirtless scene just because is (*chef's kiss*) pure perfection.

I remember being on a Beauty and the Beast research binge, and as I was doing research in a study room way deep in the bowels of my college library, I watched this movie on KZbin. Needless to say, that dark, quiet atmosphere lent itself pretty well to this movie.

The French here is, for me, so lovely and clean and easy to follow. When I get ready for a trip over, I often play this movie to hear the language.

Thank you! I think people often get intimidated by older prestige films so I like to have fun with it. I think it makes it more approachable.

That “ello” the beast does… I wonder if Lumiar in the Disney one was making a reference? They sound so similar.

Yeah this film did influence a lot of different media, including other adaptations of the story. Also the thing you said about how always older movies ( or at least ones from this time period) with a sense of stoicism is very true. It kind of like watching old Hollywood blooper that have floating around the internet, like we forget they were people too.

Exactly! I love the old Hollywood bloopers because honestly we're all the same then and now.

Along with Marlene Dietrich and others, I felt sad when the Beast turned into the Prince. Dietrich cried out "Where is my Beast?!" And that was part of Cocteau's intention. And Belle here feels the same way, initially, which I have always liked.

Jean Marais, incidentally, plays both Beast and Avenent. Marais was kind of a muse for Cocteau and was in a number of his movies. This was my very first viewing of a movie "Beauty and the Beast". It was broadcast late at night on PBS when I was about eight years old. My parents and I gathered in their bedroom with the tv on, and I read the subtitles. Both my parents were conversant in French. No other movie, Disney included, has, for me, measured up to this one.

If you’re interested in other film versions of Beauty and the Beast, I got to recommend one of my favorite versions - Panna a Netvor. Its a Czech film from 1978 that plays more into gothic horror. It also has my favorite Beast design! It’s on youtube with subtitles, and I watch it every Halloween for the ~vibes~

I haven’t seen this version though I have heard about it. I really loved the crossover review that KZbinrs Some Jerk with a Camera and Kyle Kallgren did comparing this version and the Disney one. Not only is it filled with clever lyrics parodying the songs, but I love that they come to the conclusion that the reason why it’s a tale as old as time is because it teaches the most important lesson a child should learn: empathy.

I remember watching that video! That was where I got a lot of my knowledge of this movie, honestly. Actually, I'm not sure I'd watched the Disney version yet at that point either. I think I did eventually. I got all my Beauty and the Beast as a kid from Fairy Tale Theater's "Cocteau For Kids" version (😜), until I got really into researching fairy tales and their different versions and learned about story archetypes.

At the premiere of this film, when the Beast transforms into Avenant, Greta Garbot famously cried out: "GIVE ME BACK MY BEAUTIFUL BEAST!" I think we can all relate to her to some degree.

I knew this movie existed but not about the ending! Ever since I first saw it at the cinema I wished the Disney version would have the Beast curse would transfer to Gaston just in time for him to be torn apart by his own mob! (Apologies if I've left a similar comment on other videos! Was just cool to see that something like that did happen in this one! 😊 )

Recently watched the movie when I found it on Max. It’s a beautifully shot film and I DEFINITELY see where it’s inspired so many of the later iterations of the story. (Faerie Tale Theatre was a blatant homage) The ending does leave something to be desired though. 😢

Fun thing about the disembodied arms/hands and the moving statues. In the original book everyone in the castle (aside from the beast’s mom) got turned to stone (by the good fairy not the bad one) so there would be less of a chance that they’d tell about the curse which would cause it to not be able to be broken. There are also invisible staff aswell Don’t worry everyone goes back to normal when the curse is broken

I remember seeing this on TCM many years ago. The parallel symbolism got juxtaposed when Avenant exchanged places with La Bete. Maybe they represent competing aspects of her psyche and the ailing father represents her animus in the Jungian sense. 🦁

Believe it or not, I saw this as a kid along with one of my relatives and it was English. And honestly, I do agree what you're saying. It's old quality, but still feels comforting to watch something. They work so hard back to make in the 80s. The story, it definitely learned better quality. Better quality and I have to sit in a live action Disney beating the beast movie they made last year. You know what I mean? Right

I don't remember the door talking in the 91 version (which is the superior version). From what I've read Jean Marais who played Beast in the this was a good man while Klaus Kinski who portrayed Beast in Farie Tale Theater was a total p.o.s.

Putting aside the cartoon which is a different medium, something is wrong comparing this great masterpiece with other versions The American habit of not ever differenciating between art and plain entertaiment is very sad. Putting Chaplin and Keaton on the same level as recent movies with trite bathroom jokes like Gold Member or this film with recent renditions is like rating the Pieta' and Ronald McDonald statue as equal. For 20 years in the US I had to hear "It's a matter of taste" and answered "It is,either you have it or you don't".The idea that all opinions are valid breeds no vax and flatearthers. That said I see your friends loved the movie and you did, too, young people digging it are wonderful. Your comments are entertaining and open minded (you probably think I'm not) if at times a bit bratty but you'll be safe in France, they have recently outlawed spanking. ❤
