Fun fact: Geena Davis is an incredible athlete who picked up archery at 41 and made it to the semifinals for the Olympic Trials for Sydney in 2000. At her highest rank she was considered the 13th best archer in the United States.

Archery isn't long distance running. It's also about the bow draw, and she's somewhere around six feet, so there's a lot of room for a bow draw.

I know that is probably the most quoted line from the movie but my favorite is actually from the scene where Dottie is leaving and Jimmy is trying to talk her out of it. "It got too hard? It's supposed to be hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great." For anyone who has ever accomplished anything really difficult - lost a bunch of weight, got your degree, completed that immense project at work that got you a promotion, started your own KZbin channel - you know how effing hard you had to work to reach that goal. You can understand what Jimmy is talking about.

I love how older Dottie telegraphs her entire arc when she talks to her grandkids at the beginning. Tells the older one to not discourage his younger brother, then unambiguously tells the younger one to "kill em." Regardless of whether you think she dropped the ball on purpose or not, that's exactly where Dottie landed on her treatment of Kit, don't discourage her and keep her competitive at the same time.

When I tell you that everybody in this film gave it a thousand percent.....they really came on their "A" game. Now I love Madonna, but she was never a strong actress. She did great. This movie gets you so drawn in. Also, the scene where the black ladies through the ball from outer field was Marshall's homage to the all black female baseball teams that never got recognized by the league and given a place to play in their matches. Penny was such a good director. The Marshall siblings had so much talent. And Tom Hanks is worth every penny they paid him and then some. He is a lightning rod of talent and comedy....his touchstone.

When our daughters were teenagers and were fighting all the time, we had them sit down and watch this movie with us. Their relationship was very similar to Dottie and Kit. Our youngest always felt like her sister was holding her back and was mean to her for no reason. The oldest was frustrated by her sisters behavior and her trying to help was only making it worse. They watched all the way through and really didn't say much. The next morning at breakfast, I asked the youngest what she thought of the movie. She said she really enjoyed the movie , except for the way that Dottie treated Kit. She looked at us very seriously and said, "That Dottie, what a bitch!" My wife and I howled laughing! it was one of those truly hilarious family moments. Years later our youngest finally understood what was really going on, but we still laugh at that moment and every once in awhile at the proper moment we still say, "that Dottie, what a bitch!"

There’s a big controversy about the end of this film: ‘Did Dottie drop the ball on purpose?’ Some people say no, I say yes and here’s why. First, Dottie only went to play because Kit wanted to go. As much as Dottie loved baseball, she knew it was more important to Kit. She would rather sacrifice her glory and her team for her sisters glory. Second: At the very beginning of the movie, Dottie (as an older woman) tells her older grandson to go easy on his younger brother. Then she tells her younger grandson to kill his older brother. I believe this is foreshadowing the end of the movie. Anyway, great review and thanks for all the great content.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I played softball my whole life and I have to much respect for the women of the AAGPBL and the doors they opened for us. Your love for penny marshal is awesome. She is a trailblazer creating movies about trailblazers!!!

This is one of the best sports movies of all time. It is quotable and the cast was PERFECT. I cannot imagine this movie with any other actors. There are only a few baseball movies that I would put ahead of them and one I'm really, really hoping you watch because I think you'd LOOOVE it and that would be ... The Sandlot.

Trivia from Oregon: Dottie and her sister are from Willamette, Oregon, now a neighborhood in West Linn. Whenever this movie comes up, some Oregonian is bound to mention it. It's a state law. 🙂

"The Long Kiss Goodnight " with Gina Davis. If you like her and you like "Die hard" type movies (this is better) watch "The Long Kiss Goodnight " then watch her in "Earth Girls are Easy" for something completely different!

If you love Penny Marshall, notice Madonna's great dance partner at the Suds Bucket is the actor Eddie Mekka who played Carmine Ragusa "The Big Ragoo" from Laverne and Shirley as a DANCE INSTRUCTOR! How cool is that?!!
