Branch Rickey, general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, had been wanting to break the color barrier for many years, and he and Robinson formed a formidable partnership.

THAT scene still brings a tear to my eye. You expressed perfectly but how many wonderfully talented women the Negro Leagues and definitely not given the same attention OR opportunities. MANY I'm sure we're even better than the women in this team BUT we never allowed to do an open try out to actually find out on an open playing field. It was so incredibly sad that during that time, even though collectively women didn't have the same rights as men. All of the older ladies (with the exception of the ones playing the older Kit and Dottie) were all actual former players of the AAGPBL. So all of those scenes where they're playing at Doubleday Field and at the National Baseball Hall of Fame museum were real former players. I love that Penny Marshall included them into the film.

Fun fact: the older ladies, who were playing baseball in the beginning and end of the movie… Those were the real life AAGPBL players. They really do still got it!!! 23:35 - Jackie Robinson didn't break the baseball color barrier until 1947. So, this would have been a few years before that. The woman playing that part, DeLisa Chinn-Tyler, was a softball player. According to Wikipeida: "Chinn-Tyler, then 31, was cast in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own, which was filmed primarily in Evansville, Indiana after she answered an open casting call advertised in the local paper. At the tryouts she was told there were no parts for Black women due to the fact that at the time the film was set the sport was not integrated, but director Penny Marshall was at the tryouts that day, saw Chinn-Tyler play, and decided to write her into the film."

So, whether she dropped the ball on purpose or not… the outcome would likely have remained the same. If she never came back, they wouldn’t have needed to bat in the bottom of the inning (they would have already won).

Dottie absolutely did not drop the ball on purpose. There is nothing about Dottie's character or behaviour up to that moment that would lead one to conclude that. It also makes for a TERRIBLE ending -- Kit is a phony and Dottie is a liar who betrayed ALL of her teammates. It's honestly ridiculous that people think for a second Dottie would be happy for Kit if she LET her win. Dottie is proud of Kit because she EARNED it. Kit won fair and square.

I relate to Marla! My sisters and I had a portrait done for our parents 25th anniversary. It was fine. The photography studio asked to use a copy in their advertisements, which my sisters agreed to (I was a minor). However, they didn’t tell anyone that they were gonna edit me out the portrait. We found out about it when we saw it on a billboard on the highway. When my parents demanded to know why, the photographer said, "that one has a face for radio." My dad slashed his tires and the cops were too "busy" to investigate.

This is arguably one of the best 20 best movies ever made. This movie makes me tear up every time I watch it. Penny Marshal AKA Lavern definitely hit a home run with this movie. She also put her dad in it plus two actors from her old show "Lavern and Shirly" side note RIP Cindy Williams AKA Shirley. Great movie great reaction.

I enjoyed your enjoyment of this. The screenwriters were a couple of experienced sceenwriters, real pros, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. I forget about Oscars, but the movie was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress - the TRUE highest honor for movies (and it got there pretty quickly, 20 years after release).

I was 18 and watched this in the theatre 3 times and was absolutely in love with it. From a young woman's perspective, watching these women break conventions in a still very traditional and patriarchal time period...and capture the imaginations and admiration because they were great ballplayers....was so inspiring to my 18 year old self. Also, Dottie is the older sister everyone hopes for. Also, she is just so strikingly gorgeous. Also, Dottie repeatedly shows her iron clutch with a ball. She dropped it on purpose because family trumps everything. I LOVE how much you enjoyed this. The Prime series of the same name is quite enjoyable too. They have some strong black women in it and their struggles in trying to play ball & also in the general time period. 💛⚾️

It’s a fictional story and all of the characters are fictional but it’s based in truth (the Rockford Peaches were a real team, winning 4 championships in their lifetime). “Walter Harvey,” played by Garry Marshall (director Penny Marshall’s older brother and a successful writer-director himself, both in television and movies), was in real life chewing gum magnate and Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley. The league lasted from 1943 to 1954, expanding in 1944 to 8 teams, and at one point encompassing 10 teams, all in the Midwest, before it began shrinking in the early Fifties, ultimately disbanding in 1954. The team did not play in the 1943 league championship, as depicted in the film. In real life, the Racine Belles faced the Kenosha Comets in 1943; the Peaches won their first title in 1945.

I absolutely love this movie, and there’s so many great scenes but my favorite is probably Dottie meeting adult Stillwell. It’s so brief, but you get the impression that that obnoxious little boy grew up to be a good man who adored his mother. The actor did such a great job, and that little shot of him staring at the standee of his mom, and taking a photo with it and then turning back to look at her just kills me.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Rosie’s character, Doris, was not scouted by the same man, but she is “traditionally” more attractive than Marla. However, Doris, Kit, and Marla are not up to beauty standards of that era in general unlike May and Dottie. With today’s rules it wouldn’t have mattered that Dottie dropped the ball because Kit wouldn’t be allowed to rush her like that. She got tapped by the ball and that would’ve been it. Definitely in my top five favorite movies. Maybe it's because I'm the oldest sister, but I loved Kit. She tried so hard and she wanted it more than Dottie. Because in the end, Dottie did love baseball, but she loved her sister more. I feel her. And Tom Hanks was stellar in this; so funny, so animated! The guy dancing wirh Madonna at the Suds Bucket was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl.

This movie is pretty accurate, not 100%. This is where women's professional sports really started. This would have taken place around 1942-1943 when the US entered WW2. Yes, Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. She came to realize what Kitt truly was going through. So glad you loved this movie, I've loved this movie since I saw it as a kid when it first came out. The TV show is really interesting, but quite different from the movie.

It was so heartwarming to see you enjoy this movie so much! I've loved this movie since I first saw it in the theatre. I liked how director Penny Marshall gave parts to her brother, Gary Marshall, a great director and comedic actor himself, and David Lander, her co-star from Laverne and Shirley (he was Squiggy). And by watching along with you I was reminded how great Jon Lovitz was in this film; I wish his character had remained in the film, but I guess that "pickle tickle" he gave the wife turned into a whole thing by itself. This makes me think of my cousin. We lived together for a couple of years and we would always watch this movie when it was on cable. He passed away a few years ago because of covid. It brings happy tears thinking about us laughing at this movie.

I grew up in Rockford so, even though I was never a baseball fan, I always knew of the Peaches. I drove by their field, which was never taken down, many times. They are now building a hall of fame for the women at that spot and I believe renovating the field as well.

My buddy~I CAN tell first hand that it is very stressful to have somebody who's involved in a war. I was engaged at one time to a soldier, he was a US Marine. He actually was in the service when we met and it was peace time. So then for awhile he was out because he was done with his service. THEN the war broke out in the country of Grenada. HE felt that it was his DUTY to sign back in for a reenlistment. So for awhile I was with him while he was overseas fighting in that war. I cannot explain how it is but believe me when I tell you that there is nothing like that feeling when you are separated from a soldier who's in active duty in a war. That's why the scene with Betty when they hand her the letter from the Department of Defense it STILL makes me break down in tears. I have watched this movie I'd say probably about 25 times by now. It gets to me every single time not just because of my ex fiancee. But it's also because I come from a 3 generational and multiply branch military family. MY family members are people who fought during this war. I absolutely can empathize with how it feels to be what are known as Gold Star families. #NYGenXBIKERLady

Norm McDonald had a joke about Madonna on SNL Weekend Update back when he was there. "Congrats to Madonna on the birth of her beautiful baby girl. The baby weighed in at 6lbs, 9oz, making it the 4th largest object ever to pass through Madonna's birth canal." Crowd cheers nervously.
