Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a 2004 role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the GameCube. The Thousand-Year Door is the second game in the Paper Mario series. The Thousand-Year Door borrows many gameplay elements from its predecessor, such as a drawing-based art style, and a turn-based battle system with an emphasis on action. For the majority of the game the player controls Mario, although Bowser and Princess Peach are playable at certain points. The plot follows Mario's quest as he tries to retrieve the seven Crystal Stars and rescue Peach from the X-Nauts. The game was praised by critics. Critics generally praised the game's engaging plot and gameplay. The Thousand-Year Door won the "Role Playing Game of the Year" award at the 2005 Interactive Achievement Awards.

If the literal hanging noose in the middle of Rougeport wasn't enough to show how much of a dank crime town this place is, there is actually something that got censored from the japanese version. In the room in the back alleys with all the newspapers and other trash, there's a chalk outline of a Toad body on the floor with faint splotches of dried red blood splattered halfway across the room, which you can still see some of it left on the left wall. Let's just say if you had a 3rd party member, Monokuma would've had to make a body discovery announcement.

Protip: The game really doesn’t explain this until much later, but if you press the “A” button during some parts of attacks you can initiate a “Stylish Command”. These can excite the audience in battle and will be very helpful later on for your special attacks. A simple one to do is pressing the “A” button in between jumps, or after Mario swings his hammer. *Edit in your case it would be “X”*

Nico, just something you might not know: Toadsworth is actually a character introduced in Super Mario Sunshine, gamecube's mario launch title. He used to make regular appearences on gamecube games, started to make less appearences on the wii era, and then he kinda dissappeared. So you mentioned at the start how there's a bit of "3D" to mario at the start. Well that's because Mario is actually 3d in this game! They actually use models for all of the characters in this series, its just that they're flat models. It was only in the first game for the N64 that the characters were actually sprites.

Alright, so on how the games are usually seen by the fans: Paper Mario 64: Very much enjoyed, got many people into the series, and some even prefer it to the next game. The Thousand Year Door: Pretty much universally beloved, eventually you'll experience why. Super Paper Mario: Changed the gamed battle and exploration layout, which angered many, but the incredibly good story helped people enjoy it. Sticker Star: And this is where the series was changed. Exp was gone, the battles were changed again, and many things became gimmicky (It's a bit hard to explain). Oh, and no partners. Color Splash: Kept the same formula as the last one, But the beautiful graphics and humor helped it out on being an ok game in its own right, even if some don't find it a good PAPER MARIO game (within the series). Oh and still no partners. Origami King: Partners are back, and many things have returned to formula, but there are still some things that are based on the previous two games, rather than the original 2. Guess we'll just have to see how it turns out when it's released.

Well, I'll try to be non-spoiler-y about this, as this is one of my cherished childhood games. 16:18 Actually, it's the SP, not the DS. 30:12 One thing you'll notice very soon in this game is that everything has a fixed camera, so the secrets hidden throughout this game is very obscure. If you're planning on finding those secrets (not mandatory, mind you), then keep a sharp eye out. 37:57 You noticed it later on in your fight against Gus, but it seems like you might've forgotten. The Tattle ability you used is actually useful, not just to scan enemy's HP and weakness right then and there, but for future encounters. If you encounter the same enemy you scanned previously, you'll see their HP every time, which is very helpful in strategizing. 46:45 You haven't suffered the downside of this yet, but I HIGHLY recommend you use the Save Blocks liberally. Also, minor thing, but you'll notice Goombella uses words like "like" and "totally", so I think a valley girl accent is best suited for her.

Hey Nico! Make sure you talk to Luigi every time you see him. He's got some fun stuff going on and it progresses throughout the story. And it's missable. You could theoretically edit all of those interactions together into one video at the end. Your mods can probably help you figure out when you have everything. I think you'd enjoy it and many people miss it (many KZbinrs skip it), so many viewers will enjoy it. Also, I think Goombella could use a different voice. She's sassy, so maybe a slightly nicer Larxene?

Okay Nico! Some tips for this game! First of all, you can lessen the damage taken by enemy attacks with the correct timing by pressing the "A" button which is called guarding. OR you can do damage to enemies when they attack you by pressing the "B" button which is known as super guarding. Be warned though, its ALOT harder to super guard than it is the regular guard. Also Since I don't see anyone mentioning this, you CAN get your coins back! You need to go the room where you got your first star piece and talk to the guy.

I’m so happy to see this! I think you’ll really enjoy this game. :D EDIT: It seems that Super Paper Mario is more of a “love it or hate it” game on account of it being more of a platformer than an RPG like the previous PM games. I personally think it was still pretty high quality with a great story. But I think nearly all Paper Mario fans can agree that the fourth game, Sticker Star, is where things really hit rock bottom.

@@denickart More than lack of XP was putting Sticker Star down. It was a big thing, and sticks out the most, but other things about the game was the lack of unique characters, which were a staple in other games, the boring locations, the unfunny dialogue and the boss battles being the most poorly designed thing I've ever seen. That being said, Super Paper Mario is great. I love it and it's my second favourite next to TTYD.

I LOVE this game! So awesome that you're doing it! As for series quality, Thousand Year Door and the original are both great, Super is more of a platformer with some RPG elements but it's still a good game. Sticker Star and Color Splash are to be burned with fire.

Nico there’s something you should know as a tip. Goombella is very useful mainly in battle with her Tattle ability. It allows you to see the enemies health bars (like with Gus), interesting info like what they are weak against and or other useful things (again like with Gus), and when you Tattle like a Goomba it carries over the information (health mainly) to other battles. (Side note: make sure to Tattle Every Single Enemy at least once. Very important)

Other RPG starting towns: nice friendly place where the townspeople are welcoming and there's not much danger except from outside forces Rogueport: the gallow is literally the first thing you see (even though like 50% of the Mario universe's species have no visible necks)

Nico, The Robber that stole your money is at the back alley where the room was dirty. If you keep talking to him, he will give the money that he stole from you. Another thing that is also interesting is that in the Japanese version of the game, that dirty room use to have a Toad outline on the floor with blood stains until they removed it in the west. That’s pretty Dark O.O....

I looked up pictures to see and, honestly, even in this version it looks like there's faded bloodstains on the wall, I mean, it could be anything, but, it just looks very reminiscent of the bottom of the well in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You are right the style of this game is so unique and timeless probably because the don't even try to be realistic and are inventive instead. The 1st paper mario game took place in the mushroom kingdom where they almost everyone was friendly and generous and this game was trying to change it up.

TTYD is my favorite game of all time. It was extremely formative for my childhood. I'm very excited. Also, this game is about as dark and deep as Mario ever gets, and it has one of the richest stories and the deepest well of characters ever! One character in particular in this game meant a lot to me growing up. Paper Mario 64, TTYD and Super Paper Mario are all great for different reasons, with the story being the best in SPM, and TTYD being the best overall game. The last two entries... Well we won't speak of them.

This series is one of the reasons I started to enjoy turnbased RPG's when I was young. The game did not require grinding but still required me to put in some thought as some bosses were tricky but not overly frustrating/unbeatable. Its simple but not in an insulting way, such a great entry point into the genre.
