Agree with you that cars seem more relaxed about commuters than weekend bunch riders.

Yea I think it’s more of a mentality thing. Everyone should probably try and put themselves in each others shoes. Would go a long way to reduce frustration and angst.

Another great video Josh. I took 2 years off cycling and picked it up again recently and I noticed the vast improvements to cycling infrastructure even in that short time. Keen to see the developments over the next few years. End of the day more infrastructure means more of us out and about on bikes enjoying the city.
@joshkwanАй бұрын
That’s exactly it. I think most commuters and recreational cyclists would prefer to be riding in a seperate bike lane of road. This isn’t a chicken and egg problem, the infrastructure needs to be in place first.

Great to hear your level headed thoughts regarding motorists and cyclists, Josh. I ride road; in bunches and solo commutes. I always give a wave to motorists that give me plenty of room when passing. I figure we can do with all the help we can get when it comes to being accepted and treated with respect whilst on the road.

Nice video Josh. I agree with your point on being considerate to car drivers. As a road cyclist I have had a few close shaves with cars but more often I find cars giving way and being aware of me. I always give the driver acknowledgement 👍 to let them know I appreciate what they have done.

Thanks for watching brother. I think if all cyclists can be a bit more understanding to motorists and give them some gratitude, overall drivers will be a bit more tolerant and careful around cyclists. Be the change you want to see in the world!

Connecting the Cooks River path to Bay Run would be fantastic. It will help form an almost complete loop around the inner west. And I agree with your message. For example, I give a goodbye wave to anybody who so much as takes a step to the side to give me space. I think it's cute when drivers wave back to me haha

Hi Josh, good video and I agree what you stated about relationship with Cyclists and Motorists and as a Cyclist, I feel that whether or not you're doing it as a commute, recreation or sport, we are all ambassadors to our cause and those who go out and act like complete bogans, they don't do any of us any good. You'll get bogans in all walks of life but I still think nice behaviour will get you much further. Oh, whilst I've seen your videos before, I'm now a new subscriber. I know Sydney pretty well as I've driven buses there for over 33 years.

It's great to see all the cycling infrastructure being established, I started visiting Sydney back in the 90's and it sure has changed since then (mostly for the better). NSW has a bad rap as a 'anti cyclist' state but clearly that is changing- Wollongong as a UCI status city after hosting the RR WC,the MTB parks being established and clearly the investment you are highlighting. Great vlog, keep em coming 👏 🍻

Encouraging best flow on the roads in the most important thing. If that means slowing down for a driver, do it. Unfortunately, many drivers don’t allow for best or safe flow for cyclists due to ‘must get in front’ syndrome.
@joshkwanАй бұрын
agreed, I know a lot of cyclists lane filter, but if all you’re going to do it go infront of cars who safely overtook you, then I can definitely see why motorists would get upset.

At one part you said it's inevitable to share a road with a car. That shouldn't be so. If we make it so that the powers that be have to ensure cyclists must not have to share the road with cars, then the infrastructure will happen. First step is to do what they do in the Netherlands, raise the roads where pedestrians and cyclists cross. A type of speed hump that the car has to go over, rather than the pedestrian having to step down to the road. it makes it abundantly clear that the pedestrian/cyclists get the right of way. it would be a massive improvement for those pushing strollers and those in wheel chairs. You still have the gutter but it can be be, "bridged", over with foot path. In conjunction with the first step. Do away with any law that says an adult cannot ride on a foot path. The danger from a cyclists to a pedestrian is considerably less that the danger of a car/truck to a cyclist. Adjust the rule so that a cyclist has to get off the concrete footpath while passing a pedestrian and the cyclist has to slow down to 10klm.
@joshkwanАй бұрын
You’re right that the infrastructure needs to move in step with the legislation. A third part to the puzzle is people changing their mentality about cycling and cyclists. Currently I am in Japan and it’s very common to see people here riding bikes. And they are mostly women and children too. They ride on the road and the cars move around them respectfully.

Not complaining, only making a comment. The camera jiggling on every bump you hit, not good. However I'm still a fan of the channel overall.

Unfortunately since the camera is on a very long pole and is also quite heavy there is no way to avoid the bouncing. Maybe a more sturdy pole is required.

I think roadies can do a lot more to improve their perception. For example, if I'm taking the lane and know that I'm going to slow a car down for a little bit, I put my hand up at the start in the "sorry, I'm slowing you down" gesture, but then when I'm ready to pull over and let them past I give them a friendly wave. Not saying this works for everything, and there are plenty of other ways we can let people know we're sharing the road, but courteous behaviour is helpful
@joshkwanАй бұрын
@@Secretlyanothername for sure, this is definitely something I try and do. Especially when commuting, or I am the last person in the bunch ride. Just giving motorists a bit of gratitude goes a long way.
